    Post BugMeNot (compulsory registration bypass)

Website that lets you read a page's content bypassing required registration that some (annoying) sites like to use (various newspapers, for example).
I used it to read reviews and discussions of movies on IMDB since they decided to make that registratoin only, so they can get your details and sell them on. bleh, no thanks. So I think this kind website is completely justified from that perspective

    Well, let's see:

    http://forums.skadi.net
    Account # 1
    username: foreignlover
    password: bugmenot

    http://www.skadi.net
    Account # 1
    username: Gravate
    password: abcd123

I don't think that this side is so great. I remember that this bugmenot.com page was used by the hacker who attacked tNP several times.

Post Re: BugMeNot (compulsory registration bypass)

ah, really? how did he go about doing that? (actually I don't expect you to say 'out loud' but I want to know anyway ). I would have thought it just made a new account. I don't know what else he could have done with it. Actually I didn't know it worked on forums either. I guess it can have good and evil uses then

    well, the FAQ says,
    Q. Is it ethically justifiable to do this?
    A. You'll have to find your own way there my friend. However, there is an interesting discussion happening over here.

I do like it though that the account it came up with for here is "foreignlover", lol. and the passwords are there so if anyone wants to use those two lovely names...

**** actually I looked at it again and it doesn't make the names up itself (which is what I kinda thought it might for some reason), rather somebody has to actually go and register at the website themself, then they put the password and username into BugMeNot so that someone else searching for a username to read eg. a N.Y. Times article can always find one. That's all it does, kind of a 'username sharing' hub to get around various companies irritating and intrusive registration requests.

So, I guess it'd actually be good for you to find 'troll' accounts or other unwelcomes, and that "foreignlover" (reg. 20th august!) and "gravate" aren't 'real' users. I suggest they are banned immediatley

Of course, whoever made the accounts and whoever uses them can simply make a new account if they want to read the forum. (foreignlover was active 9 hours ago, so someone was using it earlier today - however it has 0 posts). What you can do I guess is 'check' for shared usernames on BugMeNow, but it doesn't mean someone you might not want on your forum can't come back still (i.e. by creating a new account), unless you want to create some top secret 'invite only' forum or something...
