From what I've seen, it is less Anti-German then most other movies about WW2 - Still far from drawing a realistic picture either.

Saw it the other day. It was okay. The "look" and style of the picture was more akin to American action film. Exaggerated, cold colors, lots of cinematic. Not realistic in that sense, but perhaps closer to it than previous attempts. At least not everyone is wearing red armbands. Though on this and other points the film makes a self-conscience point of recognition of the "realism" in itself. In the end, as in all movies that are made nowadays, nationalism and racialism cannot be condoned in any way, and of course old decrepit, pathetic Hitler (appears very old and bent over by Bruno Ganz) mumbling about how he cleansed the earth of jewry. that was i think specifically designed as a sharp sting against all gentiles, as though saying "he tried to destroy us, now look how strong we are!" The germans are depicted as cowards, ruthless killers and selfish. The kids are depicted as the real heroes. Goebbels is scary and emotionless. Eva Braun in crazy. The best scene and most inspiring was perhaps the female youth saluting and dying an honorable death lest she be taken alive as hostage by the red army.

In other news, I saw today the Czech movie Horem Padem "Up and Down". Pretty good racialist stuff mixed up with mixed messages. Confirming stereotypes of "racist" Russian ladies, gypsy thieves, stupid strong football fans, etc. Nice scenes of the Sparta fans in their meeting hall. The girl-dancer in the movie is beautiful. Altogether however it was a bit disjunct, and unresolved. Many humorous moments make it rewarding, despite the cheap propaganda scene of the czech man and his australoid wife / kid playing on the golden-lit beach, and the australoid mulatto boy has a Nedved jersey on!

I suppose a balanced account of this subject was just too much to hope for. I should have known better - Joachim Fest seems to take a special delight in deriding National Socialism, Hitler and Goebbels in particular. His book, Inside Hitler's Bunker: The Last Days of the Third Reich (Der Untergang: Hitler und das Ende des Dritten Reiches), upon which the movie was largely based, was no better.

It is amazing to me that this professional critic of Germany is routinely characterised as "the preeminent historian" (from the bookjacket), and yet as he says in his Bibliography, "This volume contains no footnotes. Every citation or incident mentioned can be traced to a source, however." In no other subject can I even imagine that a so-called historian would not be broadly discredited were he or she to publish a purportedly scholarly historical study without citing sources. But on the subject of Germany, exceptions always seem to be in order.

I saw National Treasure yesterday. It was quite a good movie, using a lot of thoughts from conspiracy theory (Free Masons, and Templars mostly). Or maybe, on second thought, it was just an advertisement for the Masons, it's hard to know.

Then we saw Soulplane, one of the few Congoid comedies I've liked so far. It gets so extreme that one has to laugh at it, with "players" and "big mommas" and such. Extremely infantile

And finally we saw Elektra. By then we were a bit tired, so it is hard to give a fair description. It was good I think, but not very good.

I watched both Deuce Bigalow European Giggalo and The 40 Year Old Virgin.
Both movies are hillarious. Though I prefer the latter.

The Transporter 2...that seems to be like a good movie.

Post AW: What Movies Have You Seen Lately?

Last weekend I watched the DVD of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, starring Al Pacino. Even Hollywood could not spoil this stark portrayal of Christian-Jewish relations in Venice at the turn of the 17th century. Not at all politically correct, and therefore highly recommended.

I was left speechless at the movie's end. Contrary to the intention of the director and perhaps even of Shakespeare himself, I found absolutely nothing admirable in any of the characters. In fact, at the end, only one thing rang in my mind, like a clear bell tolling through thin mountain air: It's a trick, it's all a trick, and we all are the victims. A very desolate feeling afterward, lying in the dark, trying to sleep.

You have to see this movie.

Are either Constantine or Sin City worth viewing?
