Russian Dolls. Quite good. It has that Audrey Tautou in it but she's not the main character. The red headed actress was very nice, but I can't remember her name.

There was a bit of race mixing and promotion of sexual deviancy though. Is it impossible to make a film without such filth in these days? I don't really bother going to the pictures any more, I only went this time cos I was showing a Russian friend round London and was too tired to do anything other than sit down for an hour and a bit in a Cinema!

    It's a hobby!

Think of it as a way of discouraging others from seeing it.

Creepy and eldritch and supernatural are great, but torture should never be put explicitly into a film. Gruesome and vivid portrayal of the causing of pain for the gratification of the torturer, and us, his voyeuristic accomplices, does far more damage to society.

Just because YOU are sane and level-headed enough to deal with having witnessed such a thing on film, and can safely compartmentalise it into the category 'fiction' or 'art' in your head, doesn't mean everyone can. Plenty of stupid, bad, simple, and even mentally subnormal people watch them too, however, and ACT upon what they've seen. Many of these people might never have even dreamt of some of the contrived atrocities that can be witnessed in such films, but now it's all served up for them on a plate - perfectly setting the stage for 'copy-cat' activity. Some people obsess over such films. Some disgusting people let their children watch them. Some people watch little else.

This occasionally translates into murder, or general antisocial violence and misbehaviour. Even if not it might lead to animal abuse - which is rife at this moment in time, as a member of any animal welfare charity will know, and particularly among the young. I bet if you surveyed those responsible, you'd find plenty of people who had been influenced by so called 'video nasties'.

To prevent this happening, the more educated or self-controlled should forego their selfish desire to see such things. You can't practically limit the viewing of such material, despite efforts to restrict by age and so on. If it were illegal for everybody, it would'nt be seen by those more susceptible types above. Nobody needs to see such things.

By the way, the last film I saw was Fiddler on the Roof.

Good music, excellent songs, uplifting content, nice love stories, drama, and a happy ending....

Re: What Movies Have You Seen Lately?

    Well, let's see....

At the movies, I saw the DaVinci Code and the Omen 2006. For some strange reason, I liked the Omen better.

At home, I saw Hostel yesterday. It was very good but fell a bit too heavy on my stomach since I was not in the best mood to begin with.

Thus, in order to compensate, today I watched Ice Age II: The Meltdown.
    It was great

But what is this liking for violence? What is the pleasure gained from acts of violence? I don't know, exactly, but I would guess that it is merely an aspect of a tendency to be curious.
"What happens if I do this?"
Such an instinct can be funnelled into more wholesome, and useful to society, channels.

    Can you explain it otherwise?
There are other instancesin which violent behaviour can be triggered. Psycho killers, sickos, animal torturers, rapists etc. existed long before these movies did - it's the movies themselves that got inspired from their lifestyles in the first place.
I absolutely disagree. THere are far more than there have ever been in the past. And the films legitimise it. It becomes familiar to people, almost everyday, and not as shocking as it should be to a healthy human from a healthy society.
The films react to society, but then they shape it. It's a vicious circle. Which needs to be broken.
Banning horror movies (and it ain't just horror movies that cointain violence and sick scenes, btw) would be like banning certain types of dresses for women, so that they wouldn't get raped and so that rapists wouldn't exist anymore, supposedly.
I'm not talking about horror films, but about gruesome slasher, torture things. Horror can exist without this. And indeed could be even more powerful if it restricted itself to artful use of suspense and imagination, rather than simply showing as much filth as possible.
I agree that children, or, in some cases even young adults (under 21 let's say) should not watch them, as they can do damage, just like violent cartoons and other such stuff on TV can as far as children are concerned, too.
As I said, these restrictions can't work. If it's available, people will find a way to get it.
But total banning measures would make sense to me, at least, if most adults were not sane enough.
    WE AGREE THEN!
Why is there an 'if'? Sanity is not the requirement, though. More like discernment, wisdom, and responsibility. Far RARER things... There's no other option at this moment in time.
