The World's Tallest Man is... Asian

Inner Mongolia, China -- A Chinese herdsman measuring 7-feet, 8.95-inches in height was confirmed by Guinness World Records headquarters as the tallest naturally-growing human being in the world.

Bao, from the Inner Mongolia region of China, received the official certificate from Guinness World Records headquarters on July 21 after undergoing a medical examination at Chifeng city hospital. He underwent 22 kinds of tests including mental and physical check-ups with the results finding Bao is completely normal.

Bao says he was the same size as other kids of his age before 16, but he then grew fast and reached his present height by the age of 23. He was recruited as a basketball player by Shenyang Military Area in 1973, although he left the team three years later because he failed to keep up with the speed of other players.

I was under the impression the tallest man was 8' 10". They must mean by "naturally growing" that he has no petuitary gland problems.

Angus Macaskill was almost exactly the same height. He was also not particularly tall until his teenage years, and was still growing into his twenties, like Bao.

He is (or was) recorded as the tallest "non-pathological" giant, of whom there is indisputable evidence.

The similarities with Bao are interesting.

he has yet to surpass robert wadlow, the tallest man in history, but then his case was that of a pituitary disorder, which produced much more GH than normal.

but then question is, at which point does being "tall" becomes "gigantism?" if it's only a matter on the amount of GH produced by the pituitary.

The tallest people is a tribe in Africa, but there are just so many east Asians that it is likely for them to have the tallest man. I think that for someone to be so tall there must be something 'wrong', or abnormal in his D.N.A.

i can understand the fact that the tallest mongoloid might be chinese, because china accounts for much of mongoloid population, but it only accounts for 1/6 of the world population.

i just don't see why the tallest man is not found in one of the European, or European settled nations. If we look at the total population of Europe, around 750 million, add that to the caucasian population of US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Brazil (basically around 250 million), we have the total caucasian population to be around the 1 billion mark, excluding the hundreds of millions of caucasoids in western asia and india. And since we know that Europeans have greater diversity (translating to a much wider bell curve) and also on the average taller than mongoloids, it should make sense that Europe or even Africa (around 800 million people and even they are more diverse than mongoloids) boast the tallest person, but they don't.

Not necessarily. Scientists think there are as many as twenty genes which code for (or at least influence) height. This means there is great potential for variation, and if someone has the right combination of these alleles, he could be very tall.

But yes, there are tribes (like in southern Sudan) which have very tall individuals. It's quite likely that there are some taller than this Chinese fellow, but they are isolated and much less likely to be 'discovered'. I've read that in some tribes individuals towering seven or eight feet tall are not uncommon.

The basketballer Manute Bol (7ft. 7) is from southern Sudan, and I think his grandfather was said to be 7ft 9.

This man is apparently only the tallest currently living; it's quite possible that he will soon be superseded by someone else. Because of China's high population, there is a reasonably high likelihood that the tallest man of the time will occasionally be Chinese. Besides, China is always looking for something to boost it's fame, so they probably find such things when in other countries they wouldn't become public knowledge. Height is particularly desired in Asian countries as well.

I can't find the thread but I read that the tallest men live in the Netherlands, where the average height is 5' 10". The African tribe you were speaking of was tall, and when the Europeans arrived during the 1800's with their average height of 5' 5" the Africans did seem rather tall. If I can remember the African tribe stood at aroung 5' 8". Someone find that thread!
