    Post The Causes of Anti-Americanism

What are the causes of Anti-Americanism. The last time in Europe I felt Northern Europeans had a strong Anti-Americanism in their veins. It was caused by the Iraq war but that's old news now. Is it letting up? Are Germans and French still vehemently Anti-American?

Post Re: The Causes of Anti-Americanism

From my experiences of traveling in europe earlier this year, I had no problem whatsoever with feelings of anti-americanism. If someone did have a problem, we discussed our views in a civilized manner. I did however notice alot of leftist sentiment and compassion towards muslims in the bigger cities (maybe because of Iraq?). When I stayed with family friends near Asiago in Italy we agreed on all political issues of Europe (immigration, the spread of liberalism, etc.). The only thing we disagreed on was about Bush, and once they understood that a war fought by an all-volunteer army in a far away land is low on the totem pole of importance for most Americans when they vote, we reconciled our differences. I'd say as long as America is in full control of the world's affairs without having to answer to the U.N., most of old world Europe will hate us. The U.S.A. is a gigantic country, so you can basically pick and choose any group that you want to hate by saying thats what the U.S.A. represents. For example:

    1. Leftists in Europe hate Bush because he is a religious, warmongering a**hole.

    2. Conservatives hate Bush because he is liberal (neo-conservative), anti-racialist, and an american imperialist.

It goes either way. If any of their countries were securing resources and power for the future of their country (empire) as most European countries have done in the past 400 years, they would be perfectly ok with it.

There is difference between various ways of Anti-Americanism. I do hate America for its failurs, its ill dominance, popular culture and way of life, ideologies and what they did in various wars and almost every political treaty and conference. However, I still see the potential and I dont dislike American individuals obviously for just being - American.

I think its similar with the Anti-Americanism here in Europe, some of the most Americanised kiddies are very, very Anti-American, but rather because of their leftist-liberal way of thinking a la war, death penalty, racism etc...
There are many reasons to dislike the USA, especially because they are in the moment the dominant power and use the power in a highly destructive way, even deadly for my people on the long run - and the own white Americans too.

I just hate Europeans that are anti-American, especially the French anti-Americans. My Grandmother lost three of her brothers in WWII and they died so that those "White flag flapping" French could live a better life. I'm sure they're happy they're not speaking German right now, I'm not sure if I agree. Europeans who are anti-American must be confused, that's just how it is.

There are as many causes for Anti-Americanism as there could be for Anti-European Union. But in Spain it could be said that there are two opposite and at the same time contradictory feelings marching both sides:

    a) The last international war Spain fought and lost was against United States in 1898 and the support of United States was decisive for the survival of General Franco´s rulership. This would cause a an Anti-Americanism feeling both sides right wing and left wing.

    b) The election of Bush and the support of former Spanish goverment to Iraq war against a major population disagreement reinforced the Anti-American feeling but...

the consequences of the 11M bombings and the massive muslim immigration have marked a kind of cul-de-sac respect to Anti-American feelings. First of all, the actual Spanish goverment continues helping American goverment sending troops to Afghanistan and that has no provoked any kind of massive demostrations. Second, the proven Al-Qaida
participation in the slaugthering of 11M has contributed to silence this "feeling".
And a third consequence nonetheless would be the creation of potent Basque and Catalan lobbies in Congress to favour a possible vote respect the independence of these nations.

Post Re: The Causes of Anti-Americanism

I suppose I’m not very anti. Most Americans I’ve ever met, I’ve liked and my general impression is that they are good people.
Obviously there are always going to be a few things that irritate and I have my own pet dislike, although I think I understand where it originates.

Leaving aside the Hollywood raping and schmalzing of European myth I can ‘take it or leave it’ re: American Culture, but if you are an American, you have no choice, you’re stuck with it:
As wholesome as a ‘Walton’ with a million-dollar smile, you really should be a star American Football player. You don’t have to be too academic, definitely not geeky and have plenty of all-American blonde girls chasing you.

Now that’s a tall order for most mortals to live up to, so we see it’s antithesis - the American Anti-Culture! This is for all Americans who don’t make the grade, can’t take the peer pressure, don’t want to be wholesome, don’t want to be a football star and don’t like their neighborhoods. For me it’s summed up in one song: The Barenaked Ladies - One Week.

The name of the band itself is an attempt to be naughty (gosh)

The lyrics describe an oh-so unwholesome American who is:
“the kind of guy who laughs at a funeral” oh how could he?
“Watchin X-Files with no lights on” oh you evil boy!
    but he’s alternative:
“Like Sting, I’m tantric” oh that’s about sex isn’t it?
“Like Kurasswa, I make mad films, Okay I don't make films, But if I did, they’d have a Samurai” heck that’s awesome.

You get the picture. It’s the anti-American Americans I find disingenuous and tedious. Their stab at alternative is sad because it is a mere reversing of the socially accepted norms, which are banal anyway.

That’s basically it - thanks for reading.

Post Re: The Causes of Anti-Americanism

I reckon it's inevitable, this anti-Americanism, because, as a previous poster noted, America is the dominant world power for now.
The British went through the same thing during their time at the top of the pile, but back then there was little means of reporting what was going on in the far flung reaches of the Empire, and no desire to find out the opinions of the colonised populations, or the vulgar Johnny Foreigners (even the Anglo Saxon ones).

In thirty years I suppose we'll all be slagging off the arrogant dominant power which will be China.

As for France, they tried for world dominance under Napoleon, and they failed.
I believe most French anti-Americanism stems from jealousy.
And, of course, their extraordinarily short collective memory.

Here I agree. Even worse to my way of thinking are the ones who are wannabe Europeans.

I respect those who are willing to point out, in a succinct and intelligent way, the flaws of our nation in the hope that they can be corrected. On the other hand, we see those like the people you have pointed out -- rebels without a clue.

Post Re: The Causes of Anti-Americanism

Several reasons: everything from American decadence to foreign policy to just Bush. Not all anti-Americanism are the same.

There are plenty of Europeans who love American fast food and culture, but despise how America is going around bombing every little country. In their view, America is simply not living up to its own ideal of being the land of the free.

I dont hate America per se, I just despise the cultural and geo-political shithole America has become. Nobody in their right mind could say that George Washington, Jefferson, and other Founding Fathers would be pleased with how America is today; they'd be appalled!

I have great respect for the Old Republic and even for the Confederacy. That America actually had a culture and a conscience. But sadly with the suppression of the Confederacy, America began turning into the wasteland that it is today(as I often say, the first victims of Americanism were Americans themselves who wanted to preserve their heritage, ie the South).

Originally America really didnt care what went on in the world and was content with dealing largely with its own interests. The notion of America going around the world and "spreading democracy" only occured with Theodore Roosevelt in the late 19th century, and there was plenty of home-grown opposition to it. Mark Twain, for example, was staunchly opposed to American imperialism even on the grounds that it violated the very principles America fought for in 1776.

Sadly with World War II, the last vestigaes of sanity that still remained in American society was isolated to the margins of society, where it remains to this day. And Im not talking about WNs and skinheads, but even articulated Paleo-conservatives like Buchanan and the late Same Francis who wants America to reclaim its lost heritage of the Old Republic against the MTV degradation and having America adopting a foreign policy more respectful of towards the world.
