Post Favorite Movies, besides Hollywood ones

what are your favorite movies outside of Hollywood?

Mine:

Jean de Florette
Manon de Source
La Retourne de Martin Guerre
Goodbye Lenin (i've haven't seen all of it, but the parts i've seen were entertaining)
Hero
Young and Dangerous (1-4)

I've heard great things about these two Hong Kong movies, and they both look pretty good.

Infernal Affairs
House of Flying Daggers

Post AW: Favorite Movies, besides Hollywood ones

I really like Asian movies. They are different from the usual Hollywood crap and this makes them an interesting alternative if you are fed up with Hollywood.

What I really like about those movies is that they do not approve race mixing. And it is uncommon for Europeans and Negroes to appear in Asian movies - but if they do they don't play the major roles. I appreciate this purity which once could be found in Hollywood movies until about the 60s of the last century. Nowadays Hollywood movies are a great example for the promotion of race mixing. Negroes are more and more shown as heroes defying criminal statistics.

If you are into action movies you should watch the movies John Woo made before he left Hong Kong to go to Hollywood. I recommend you to look out for <Hardboiled>, <A better tomorrow> 1+2 and <The Killer>. The main actor in all those movies is Chow Yun Fat who is one of my favourite actors. He is John Woo's favourite actor and Chow Yun Fat is for him what Kurt Russell means to John Carpenter.

You also should look out for Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee movies. Especially those Jackie Chan made before going to Hollywood are different from those he makes nowadays. Furthermore I like those sword and sorcery movies like <Chinese Ghost Story>. A great Korean movie is <Attack The Gas Station> which is great cinema, don't miss it!

Well, I don't want to stretch my posting too much since I want to leave some space for other users here to fill.

regards, Armin

I enjoy watching British drama and mysteries on the Public Broadcast Station. Some people find them boring, but I find them wonderful. I have never liked asian made films. They are just plain BAD. I was watching one with my father once, and a line in it was so bad, I will never forget it. The actor turned to the other actor and said, "Like they say in the movies, 'let's head them off at the pass'." It was one of those moments where you are sitting there stunned and trying to figure out if dialogue can really be that bad.

Dancer in the dark.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168629/
One of the sadest films I've ever seen. But also one of the best, and most emotionally touching films I have ever seen.

Björk is a fantastic actress. I love her
Please, see this film.

I also Love Kikujiro's summer by Takeshi kitano. This film is simply a very beatiful "feel good-movie". It's sort of a road movie, with (IMO) one of the best film-soundtracks ever made!

Goodbye Lenin was a decent movie.

I enjoy old French and German cinema myself.
