It's not an inside joke or anything. An AR18 is one of the prototype rifles which eventually lead to the AR10. It shoots a rather large round for an assault weapon (.308) and I think he was merely suggesting that you might like a gun that will do some serious damage

It would appear that I am mistaken.
The AR18 was actually the precursor to the M16, not the AR10.
I knew that, but forgot about it.
The AR18 fires 5.56x39 (.223) and would be very easy for you to control, due to the extremely low recoil of .223 and the fact that it weighs only 3.09kg unloaded.
It is not used in any military (never was) but is still an interesting rifle, which is selling rather well in the civilian market.

It would wreak havoc on any aluminum can in the neighborhood
