Post Re: Blue eyes versus other

As Odin Biggles mentioned, light eyes have a slight advantage on dark ones in dim surroundings, simply owing to optics principles: light irises will reflect and disperse a part of the weak quantity of incident light instead of absorbing it, thus sending more photons through the pupil. However, it doesn't make light-eyed people as adapted to dimness than cats or foxes; this dusk-sight enhancement is minor compared to the advantage of having one's retina outfitted with a tapetum lucidum.

I have blue eyes, as does all my family however I'm not sure what advantage they have other than attractiveness. My eyes and my sisters eyes do seem to be more sensitive to sunlight however, so would they therefore be an advantage in the reduced light of Europe?
Did they come about in the first place because less sunlight has reduced melanin production meaning they stayed baby blue instead of darkening with age.
It may also be possible that they are so prevalent in NW europe due to paedomorphism and sexual selection, same with blonde hair.

    Re: Blue eyes versus other

Everytime I read this thread, I wonder..... am I the only one with light eyes who doesn't have a sensitivity to sunlight? My mother does, and her eye doctor even told her that she needs to be wearing sunglassess or she will get macular degeneration (I may have worded this sentence wrong). As for me, I have never had eye problems, I have better than 20/20 vision, and sunlight doesn't bother me at all. I know there must be others who are like this as well.... show of hands?

I had that "problem" as a kid. I also easily get watered eyes when it is windy.

    Re: Blue eyes versus other

I have greenish blue eyes but I use dark brown lenses because I just think that goes better with my appearence in general and that 80% of all humans look better with brown eyes.

Cold, ice-blue eyes are never nice if you ask me. Green and dark blue eyes however can be very nice, but not if paired with dark hair. That just looks unhealthy and unnatural in some way. I do like the combination brown eyes/blonde hair however.

I have actually considered that blue eyes might be some sort of unnatural mutation, just like redish/freckled skin.

Yes, and it generally looks better. Bright eyes without dark or long lashes to compensate looks terrible.

I do not follow. Whats the problem? I am green eyed and dark haired. I find women who combine dark hair and light eyes attractive [CAUTION: The other way around is repulsing to me]

P.S. Of course light hair/light eyes is the best combination

I have light blue eyes and they are very sensitive to sun. However I must say I have better night vision then anyone I know. I wouldnt want them any other color. And I found that they can intimidate "certain" people too!

    Re: Blue eyes versus other

I´ve blue eyes and a bright skin, but I´m not too sun-sensitive. I get tanned relatively fast, but not too much. And after some days, my skin gets white again.

I find blue and green eyes very nice, since there are mostly "reserved" for Europid people. There are exceptions, but thats no problem.
