    Political leanings may be etched in the genes

    ...on the basis of a new study, a team of political scientists is arguing that people's gut-level reaction to issues such as the death penalty, taxes and abortion is strongly influenced by genetic inheritance. [...] Geneticists who study behavior and personality have known for 30 years that genes play a large role in people's instinctive emotional responses to certain issues -- their social temperament.

    -Whats really stupid about that article is the typical "policy - two party" scheme, as there would be nothing else. In fact they make people stupid by giving them just two basic alternatives - which leads to concentration of rather conservative and "more open" types, but could be much more complexe and diverse under other conditions, not to speak of the abuse of the personality traits of certain people, which vote for something they will never get since its just pretendend...

    I just posted this on Moot Stormfront.

    For this to be genetic in origin, the existence of opposing "conservative" and "progressive" camps -- let alone the stances they adopt -- would have to be constant throughout history and present in all human societies.

    Let's not forget this is just some popular article, not the study itself.

    This is interesting:

    It is not that opinions on specific issues are written into a person's DNA. Rather, genes prime people to respond cautiously or openly to the mores of a social group.
    In other words, people differ in their potential to think outside the box. At least according to this study.

    Not hard to believe at all, I believe it. Many people sad and depressed because they cannot follow their dna programming. Many people hiding in work, entertainment, sports, drugs, booze or whatever to escape it.

    That's a bit fatalistic and oversimplified isn't it? What about human free will?
    You make humans sound computer programs.

    A person only has one set of genes his lifelong but can have many political philosophies.
    I believe though genes do effect our political views as they do anything else. But so does our environment. With that in mind our political views are infinetly complex as with all human behavior.

    Genes soley responsible for our beahvior it's the interaction between our environment and our genes that is. Some people over looking this fact over simplify things.

    Those changes can be seen as your unique genes interacting with your unique environment. Not surpisingly almost no one has exactly the same political views.

    Politics is more complicated than conservative and progressive camps. But often times individual politics are as simple as self interest. And that is genetic I suppose.

    The article doesn't deny that;

    Only recently have researchers begun to examine how these predispositions, in combination with childhood and later life experiences, shape political behavior.
