    Germanic expansion until 300 A.D.:

The Germanics in Central Europe in 50 A.D. From Wikipedia. That may give a rough idea of centres and areas of actual settlement and unoccupied areas:

NS Germany 2033? Ah well, one can dream. Anyway, Could someone explain why Scandinavia is held separate from Germania? I was under the impression "Germania" is the land inhabited by all our Germanic peoples.

    sea-farers

is there a map that illustrates nordic expansion
    down the russian rivers
    into the euxine sea,
    then the aegean
    and onward to mediterranean coast-lines
    (after which, they moved inland
from the southern coast of europe)

    or down the atlantic coast
    into the mediterranean
    and up the rivers
    in to southern europe?

these tribes form the aristocracy of europe
    and begin to interact,
    then, european history becomes interesting.

thanks to blutwölfin - yes there is!

I'd also say that one should name "Germania" properly the whole living space of Germanic tribes or peoples.--However I think that already in antiquity "Germania" refered in the first line to the southern Germanic area, the Germanic settlement area in Central Europe, the continental Germanics (if one doesn't count Scandinavia to the "continent" here). Scandinavia, I think, was for the ancient writers "Scandia" (and they believed it to be an isle and much smaller than it is in reality). The ancient writers' knowledge of the Northern Germanic sphere was of course much more vague and less concrete, and the general ethnographical knowledge had its limits; certainly they had primarily contacts with and knowledge of those Germanic tribes in the lands located closer to the border of the imperium.

A map of the province Germania which the Romans planned to install up to the Elbe river:

Thanks to Armin that failed, but the Romans saved their face with the two rather small military provinces along the Rhine border Upper and Lower Germania (while free Germania was "Germania Magna").

The first map is a great map, personly one of my favourites, which shows very clear that modern-day Poland and the main part of the Czech Republic were actually native Germanic land, long before Slavic tribes moved westwards.

    Below, also an interesting map

You are absolutely correct. There is even some historical evidence that King Marbod of the Marcomanni was the actual founder of the city of Prague:eek:…don’t tell a Slav that though.

I've always wondered why there are parts of that map that are in modern Germany that are white. Why is that? I somehow doubt that Celts still existed that far into Germany.

    That's basically forest or mountains.
