Why does every one like 13th Warriour, the? This film is terrible. It is lies and it has political correct tensions throughout. An iraqi poet fighting as brother to norsemen is acidic to the truth. Thirteen is a very lucky numbre under Óđinn and in this film, tis put inside flesh by an Iraqi rat? What is wrong with every one?

I agree. The 13th Warrior is a terrible film.
It glorifies Islam over Northern culture, and it features a scene that I'm not sure whether I should laugh or cry over:
The Islamic poet forces the Viking blacksmith to forge him a curved, crescent-shaped sword -- because he was unhappy with the straight sword the Vikings had given him.
As if there was some racial connection with the shape of sword that is the most comfortable for you..eyes:
I agree it could be improved very much, sadly, it seems to be the closet movie we have to identify with the olden times.Originally Posted by Erlingr Hárbarđarson

Wow, something we all can agree on. My personal "worst scene" is where all of a sudden our friend Antonio is perfectly fluent in the language of the "northmen".Originally Posted by Eldritch

Yuck.0000:
Anyway, the book was cr*p to begin with. Pytheas Resa Till Thule by Alf Henrikson blows it right out of the water, and for so many reasons..
I have my doubts about the authenticisty of most everything in that movie... Even in the book's prologue Crichton explains how he invented things to better suit the story and his own ambitions.sadly, it seems to be the closet movie we have to identify with the olden times.
Good eye, Eldritch. I do not understand though. Would a curved sword not represent a liar and deceiver whilst a straight or Whiteman sword would symbolise truth and conviction? Perhaps I missed what you were saying, but it seem that the film, in this detailed instance, supports the norsepath over the muslim. What did you mean?Originally Posted by Eldritch

Haha. Yes, the fact as well that the film is in english is just sickening. Its chance at authenticity drowned the moment an english word fell from the films sound. What were they thinking?Originally Posted by Arcturus

Axe wieldin', Head choppin', Bone crunchin' action. It's based on a, somewhat embellished, true account of the Rus -- though the original writing was through sand-filled eyes. Beyond that tiny basis, it is ALL fiction created by Crichton.Originally Posted by Erlingr Hárbarđarson
It's no window to the olden ways, but it's not my idea of faith and purity to see our people as some desertrat would have us seen. It's in the eye of the beholder, I suppose; Anyone not of our kind won't understand us, so who cares what they think or say about us?
Entertaining movie.
Well, an Arab scimitar is usually understood to symbolize the crescent (the symbol of Islam), while a straight European sword with its handle guard looks somewhat like a cross, the symbol of Christianity.Originally Posted by Erlingr Hárbarđarson
But these symbols are completely arbitrary. There isn't anything that makes Arabs NATURALLY more inclined to fighting with curved swords, or Whites with straight swords (for example, the Moors in Seville always forged straight swords all the way until they were expelled from the Iberian peninsula, while in many Eastern European countries Christians have used curved swords).
Now, film's Arabic main chracter had been a poet, gigolo and generally a useless wastrel who had never even picked up a sword before. Obviously, when the Vikings gave him a sword he was totally useless with it, until he asked the blacksmith to forge him an Arabic style scimitar. But logically he would have been just as inept with that sword, since he had no experience of those type of swords either.
Edit: and finally, since the Vikings were not Christians, the sword's shape would be irrelevant to them anyway.
