It would be best, ideal, for a mother to never have to return to work, but there are credit cards to pay off, snazzy cars to be purchased, and the Jones', of course.

My mother stayed at home for 8 years. It seems to have worked well.

    I voted for school age.

As a mother I was lucky I could stay home till my kids were in school in fact I did not go back to work till my daughter was in grade 3 and then it was only part time I have always been home when my kids got home from school. I realise that not everyone is able to do this and they should not be made to feel guilty for having to work. My youngest is now sixteen and she will be graduating highschool this year. I still try and work my schedule around hers. My son is 23 and has been on his own now for 5 years he has held down a full time job as well as being in the military part time for the last five years also. In fact right now his unit was called up to fight our forest fires and he went even though his boss did not want him to go. My kids believe that it is important if you are a member of a group that you do your duty even if it means risking your life to help others. 248 homes were lost to the fire but he helped save many others. The most important thing to teach our children is to honor a commitment that they make and you can start this at a young age.

I wish it were possible to stay at home to look after one's children untill they go to school. But these days, as so mnay have already pointed out, financial responsibilities are the main reason why women return to work a.s.a.p. But, we must also allow ourselves to remember that many women have their own personal and career aspirations outside the home in which they would like to indulge/make a success of.

What makes the situation wors is, do you really want to "abondon" yur child to the schooling system? Home education seems the best option for me in the present state of South Africa's education system. But how can I educate my child at home while I need to be at work, helping my husband to earn a living for our children?

It's a horrible dilemma and although I do not yet have children, it is one that is of great concern...

Re: Poll: How long should Mom stay at home?

I really think a woman should stay with the kids until they leave the home. They need that comfort and care especially through the uncertain teenage years.

I voted for the last option. I think if a family cannot support themselves on the one (male) wage)..then sorry to say... they should not be having children.
I am just old fashioned I guess... I believe the family unit of Mother AND Father (with the designated roles) is essential.

I voted school age. My thought is this, it's your kid, YOU raise it. If I have kids, and I have a job before they come along, I'll just have to quit my job until they are in kindergarten. Also, the mother, or someone should be home when the child or children return from school. I was raised by my grandmother, and she worked, after school I had to go to the YMCA.... I hated it. The Y was NAAAASSSTYYYY.

I voted the last because it is a full time job for a woman to be a mother, there should not be need for another. We get by I admit that it would be the case if we lived in st. john's or anyplace that met higher demands. But as A fisherman its rough if my father didn't own the land It would harder. God, five kids and a preg. wife in a city man I would have to resort to working with nigs and foreignors on the side. Bla

Ideally, until the children have left home.

My children will not enter the demoralizing, integrity-destroying, intelligence-thwarting, police-infested institution known as the american public school.

I attended both private (Catholic) and public school systems in America. I feel that without a doubt one days worth of the private school I went to did far more damage to me than one single day of public school. However, I have strong moral fibers, a high level of intelligence and my integrity remains uncompromised. I now have two children attending the same school system that I did, and I have no problems with their roll as students in that particular system (on an educational level).

I think that the majority of the problem lies within outside influences, which students bring with them to the schoolyard. It's up to the parents to teach morals and integrity, not Music Television, and not his/her fellow classmates.
