Post What are Bavarians classified as?

Just wondering, what are Bavarians classified as? It has only come to my attention recently after locating the Back Forest (which I didn‘t even know actually existed) and just doing some general research, that a lot of the most famous fairy tales come from the region. I like to read old lores, fables, fair tales, etc. and have lately been fascinated from where they originated from.

Not really realizing it at the time, a (northern) German exchange student was nothing but laughs and giggles concerning Bavarians. I couldn’t really tell if this was a good thing or bad but she seemed to be laughing at them…why? I’m just curious, that’s all.

Are they really fat and jolly

I believe that the primary racial components in the average Bavarian are Alpine and Dinaric.
I've heard that other Germans sometimes look down on Bavarians as 'peasants' or 'country bumpkins', but I don't really know if that is true or not.

Brüder Grimm wrote storys from Schwarzwald region. Not in BAYERN! Do not genalize my southern brothers. The only bad is they speak wierd dialekt.

I thought the Brothers Grimm's storied were collected from Hesse and surrounding areas, not the Black Forest....

I'm not doubting anyone, just reciting what I've read before. Either way, I love the Grimm's stories. I have a compendium by my bedside....

Anyways, the predominant subracial types in Bavaria are just as Azdaja says: Alpines and Dinarics. Though, just as Einherjar mentioned, there is also some Nordic blood in Bavaria.

Remember that the richest parts of Germany are Bavaria and Baden-W.

Yea, but that is a phenomenon of the post-WW2 automotive industry, since BMW is in Munich, and Mercedes-Benz and Porsche are in Stuttgart. I think in the 18th and 19th centuries Preussen was the richest province of Germany, but I could be wrong. It was certainly the most powerful.

To the today German state of Bavaria there belong three parts: Altbayern ("Old-Bavaria"), where the Bavarian dialect is spoken, Franconia and East Suebia.

In Old-Bavaria the dominating type is the dinaric race, but there is plenty enough Nordic, even pure Nordics are not too less. Dinaric-Nordic mixture is quite often in faces here. Alpine racial elements are there, too, mostly in admixture with dinaric race. In Franconia in the valley of the river Main the Nordic type is more dominating than others, but the higher parts of Franconia belong to the racial most Alpine regions of Germany. But even here they are admixtured with Dinaric and Nordic elements and you will hardly find a real pure Alpine person, while on the other hand pure Nordics and Dinarics are not too rare in Germany.

That laughing about the Bavarians in Northern Germany because of their dialect and some traditions and customs is an old thing and you needn't take it too serious. On the other hand they will tell you in Bavaria funny things about the "Prussians" (=North Germans). That neverending North German - Bavarian bashing is just a big kind of national running gag. For Germany, Bavaria is a bit what Texas is for the U.S.

But don't believe stuff like the Bavarians were within Germany something quite different and a sort of nation or tribe of its own. That's junk. The "funny" Bavarian dialect is a dialect of the German language and not something own such as Gaelic or Breton or Basque. The Bavarians sure have the strongest self-consciousness of all German regions, but they ain't "un-German" in any way because of that.
