Hello all,
I remembered this forum from the old days. I was merely a lurker, but I have fond memories of it growing up, learning about Asatru, my ancestry, and the heroes of old, principally Haakon Sigurdsson and Arminius/Hermann. The covid insanity has killed my social and dating life, as it has so many others, so why not sign up? It doesn't hurt and may even be a good place for me.
My username is self-explanatory enough: Valfar (Norsk for "Father of the Slain") + Grimnir ("the masked one") in reference to Odin's funner, more mysterious side--Ygg is quite nice, too, but "YggGrimnir" doesn't roll off the tongue well. While irreligious myself, I do respect the old faith and what even came before that in Proto-Indo-European tradition. I live in the southeast of USA and hate it, but one cannot always leave. My ancestry is both common and uncommon: English, Scottish, German, and Scandinavian; but lots of Norman, having traced my genealogy nearly one thousand years. Thankfully, others had done the hard investigation for me. While I take pride in my heritage and family history, it means nothing in the United States, and I often find myself a pale imitation of they who gave me my gifts. Perhaps it's youthful wanderlust and impatience, but I've done little with my life in spite of intense work and sacrifice. There is never too much sacrifice; that is what Odin taught me.
Politically, I no longer associate with anyone. The conservatives, liberals, libertarians, socialists, marxists, and anarchists do not have the courage nor wisdom to fight what is coming, and they lack leadership of the quality needed for survival in these trying times. Mostly, people rather talk than act, especially those who are politically active. When they are politically active, they are more likely to destroy property and make messes for others to clean up than achieve real goals. But yes, I do oppose those in power in America for the same reasons the masses do, excepting that I understand who they are, what they want, and what must be done. However, I am apolitical.
For downtime, when I am not slaving away, I read, play video games, hang out and talk with people. I used to write, and before that, I played the electric guitar. I would pick them up again if I could dedicate time each day, but such is life.
Anyway, I have rambled enough. I hope that we have conductive conversations in the future.
