One in three Norwegian women has taken the morning-after pill

More than half of them had used emergency contraception more than once in their lives.

If you have had unprotected sex, you can take a little pill afterwards to avoid becoming pregnant. For that reason, it’s often called the morning-after pill.

It turns out that a good number of Norwegian women have taken this pill once or more in their lives.

“It is quite common for women to have used emergency contraception, especially among younger women,” says Bo Terning Hansen at the Cancer Registry of Norway. He is one of the researchers behind the survey.

He and colleagues surveyed more than 45,000 Scandinavian women between the ages of 18 and 45. The survey was done in 2011-2012. An article based on the findings was recently published in the journal Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica.

Norway’s rates of use are similar to neighbouring countries, but in 2011-2012, a few more women had taken the morning-after pill in Norway and Sweden than in Denmark.

    Morning-after pills sales have dropped

Bo Terning Hansen is not aware of any newer surveys from Norway and thus does not know if the situation has changed in the last eight to nine years.

It probably has, says Steinar Madsen, Medical Director of the Norwegian Medicines Agency.

Sales of emergency contraception have fallen sharply in recent years, figures from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health show.

“At the same time, the use of long-acting contraception such as contraceptive implants and hormonal IUDs has increased. So the picture we have today is quite different,” says Madsen.

He believes fewer Norwegian women use emergency contraception now, even though sales figures cannot tell us how many women have used emergency contraception at some point in their lives, or whether individual women are using it less than before.

    Fewer abortions

“It’s interesting that emergency contraception was so widely used. It shows that it is an important supplement to regular birth control,” says Madsen.

In 2009, the non-prescription morning-after pill became more readily available as stores and gas stations in Norway were allowed to sell it. But most people still buy it at a pharmacy.

In parallel with the decline in emergency contraception and the increase in long-term contraception, there have been far fewer abortions in recent years.

“In 2019, there was a historically low number of abortions in Norway. The decline in abortions over the last eight to nine years is particularly large for teenagers,” says Madsen, referring to a report from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

More emergency prevention with new partners

Half took the morning-after pill for the first time as teenagers. Terning Hansen is not very surprised by that. He believes this is mainly because young people have more new sexual partners and have not yet fully established habits for contraceptive use.

The younger you were when you first had intercourse, the more likely you were to use emergency contraception at one time or another.

The youngest women used contraception less frequently during their first sexual encounter than their older counterparts, a 2017 survey showed.

Seventeen per cent of Norwegian women who took the morning-after pill had used it in the past year. There was a greater chance that they had had new sex partners over the past six months — although they may have taken the pill before that time.

“The study confirms what we have believed. When you're in your teens, you often have a boyfriend, and then it ends. Then you put birth control on the shelf and are not prepared when prince charming shows up,” says Madsen.

“We have worked hard to get young people to keep using birth control continuously until they want children. Don't let it depend on whether you currently have a boyfriend,” he said.

    Related to condom use

Women’s use of the morning-after pill in the past year is also related to having stopped using condoms during intercourse with a new partner during the past six months.

The survey doesn’t provide information on how often women had sex or whether they used birth control other than a condom.

In addition, researchers found that those who smoke or drink a lot of alcohol at one time, at least six units more than once a month, had used the morning-after pill more often than their more temperate peers.

If you are drunk, you’re probably less likely to have birth control in place.

But the researchers don’t know if this is actually the case. A woman may have used the morning-after pill during a sober period, even though she drinks a lot now.

“There is a connection, but you can ask how useful this information is,” Madsen says about the link between alcohol use and emergency contraception.

Don't know when women will need emergency contraception

Terning Hansen emphasizes that the researchers know nothing about why the women in the survey took the pill.

“There can be many situations that the women themselves cannot control. A condom may break, or it may be a case of abuse,” he said.

About half have used emergency contraception several times. But Terning Hansen doesn’t want to make any moral judgements about this finding.

“You have ended up in a situation that you do not want to be in and then you have to find a solution for it. But it is clear that it is better to protect yourself from an unwanted pregnancy in ways other than using emergency contraception, because it does not protect against STDs,” he said.

Higher education increases likelihood of use

Women with more education are most likely to have taken the morning-after pill at some point in their lives.

“It's a little weird, I think. We don't know why,” says Terning Hansen.

He wonders if it’s because these women are more likely to know about the option.

There were a few more people with higher education in the survey than among those who did not answer, and the participants were slightly older, so the researchers cannot say for sure that they represent Norwegian women in general. Seven out of ten had taken education beyond high school.

But the participants were selected at random and many answered the questionnaire. These facts make the researchers more confident that the survey does provide a snapshot of the population from a decade ago.
Not recommended as normal birth control

The morning-after-pill does not cause more side effects than other hormonal birth control, even if a woman takes it many times.

“But we don’t recommend that emergency contraception be used instead of other kinds of birth control,” Madsen from the Norwegian Medicines Agency said.

The morning-after pill does not protect women against sexually transmitted diseases. It is also not 100 per cent effective in preventing pregnancy, although it works well if it is taken soon after intercourse.

Oral contraceptives, the birth control ring and the birth control patch are also not the safest, because many people use them incorrectly, especially among the youngest users, according to a 2012 US study.

The health authorities therefore recommend long-term contraception for young women.

As an American woman, this statement horrified me, "In 2009, the non-prescription morning-after pill became more readily available as stores and gas stations in Norway were allowed to sell it. But most people still buy it at a pharmacy." It sound like the morning-after pill is practically served with your late-night cocktail. I know that extreme openness is part of Scandinavian ways, but you can kiss off your higher birth rates forever. About 1/3 to half of pregnancies are accidents from multiple studies. I estimated that 2 million Scandinavian babies weren't born due to abortion alone since legalization. As unintended consequences, the "kindly" democratic governments now import in wonderful MENA immigrants and their culture to have babies. I remember the days when white liberal males would refer to women as making-baby making machines if we wanted a larger family. Yes, they would openly mock you in your face during the 90's. I NEVER dated a liberal after that comment, seriously.

There is always a fear to be pregnant at first, which is natural for both men and women. A parent-to-be will now fully mature and accept responsibilities like a man and woman, much like our parents once did. If you are old enough to have sex, a baby can be part of that reproductive experience, wanted or not. That is nature. I agree that it's still best to be in-love and older if pregnancy happens rather than terminating a pregnancy. Half of women who had abortions regret it too or suffer physical damage (scarring) for future pregnancies. Children really deserve two parents though.

They're so wrapped up in White guilt that it's inevitably a "responsible" and "educated" (brainwashed) folk who kills off its own bloodlines and decrees deaths to whole families as building blocks of their society, but then demands the very same to welcome a racial form of transhumanism. Wouldn't Earth be better without us? First, Whitey has got to go, then maybe the subs can foster the Great Ape Project. When does AI take over?

But for what do Skandinavians "feel guilty". A bigger guilt construction was only bashed on The Germans for "the Holocaust" (and we know how fraudulent that one is) and on the former Colonial Countries like Britain and France. The rest is not even on the pavement.

It seems there is some vicious cycle of hostility to motherhood, family, children and an anxious entertainment, consumer life-style where children would only disturb in, since they also mean responsibility. Abortion on demand is only one issue there, perhaps the most morbid, but there is also the idea that kids have to fall in with my plans and not that one plans around the kids and their future. At the same time governments are demanded to plan for all kinds of superstitious threats like "man made global warming". There is always some contradictions or conflicts in culture, but what is conjured up nowadays seems to be absurd and almost nuts.

Guilt by association with Nordic race ideals as espoused by the Third Reich, but going back to Christian guilt for our Viking ancestors. We are evil barbarians by default, for even if we may be more aesthetically pleasing, our intelligence and wit are deprecated as worthless. How many people do you know have mentioned a "dumb blonde" joke? You also see it with horrible revulsion at gingers, but why not "dumb brunette" jokes? By completely avoiding our historical repute in not seeking to exploit the masses of non-Nords, we've become passive victims rather than the serial predators we're depicted as. It seems the Medfolks suffer an inferiority complex and seek to impose their gaze upon us, so that we look at ourselves through their own projections and complexes, thus becoming expendable for even ourselves. Why shouldn't Meds have guilt trips about their own imperialism upon Germans and Celts?

It seems they are fine being guilted about their part in the Crucifixion, but not in spreading misery and suffering in the name of the Crucifixion, since they proclaim to be unique arbiters of its legacy. Meanwhile, Jewry have no guilt in the former and want to brainwash everybody about the events of WWII. So, yes, no wonder Varg would openly distance himself from "Judeo-Christianity" as a whole convention, for we are their targets for annihilation and some see no way out of this peer pressure to conform or die off as Goy Heathenry. Globally, we've got no friends except fashion model agencies and heavy metal record labels. Caricature is hardly a basis for pride and dignity, so it is obvious why we just waste away through suicidal behaviours. We are more than just stereotypes, but most feedback we get is based upon them and we don't have much social clout to turn them on their heads. Try peacefully navigating the delusions of powerful enemies gas-lighting all around you for many hundreds of years. How many generations of social engineering does it take to condition total despondency and indifference in a folk's meaning of life, especially when it becomes relegated to a mere individual's quest?

We're only allowed to "do as the Romans do" even in our own homes, because Rome took over from afar, not just assimilate as if willing and interested inhabitants of that city, for its corruption has spread everywhere through Christendom--chiefly through the use of Germany as Papal cannon fodder and the consequences of de-Nazification likewise result in de-Nordicisation vitriol, that we have been seen as the ultimate in purity since at least Tacitus. Meds are already racially Jews by Phoenician exogamy, but we are innately an obstacle as always following their trends instead of being allowed to defy them without their own hatemongering going down in the history books for eternity. Why not shake their brainwashing, except for the allure of some Latin lovers playing a domination and submission game, in which Stockholm syndrome we are degenerated to be Protestant versions of the Vatican (itself a wannabe New Jerusalem) instead of reclaiming our true heritage?

Dick Dawkins thinks of religion as a thought virus, but it's about perceptions more than anything and diplomatic manoeuvring, done by both Jews and Christians to vilify those who won't come to heel. They call it shepherding, but it's a really demeaning superiority complex based in the worst hypocrisies imaginable. For instance, child sacrifice was an essential element of Judaism in its Semitic heritage as regards Gehenna, thereby held to ritualistic glory with Isaac and Jesus. Nevertheless, it's Pagan Gentiles who are deemed monsters for supposedly cornering the market on child abuse horrors, yet there never was anything sacred about their abominations in our homeland before Christianity wiped out our free spirit. Look at us now, a supremely commodified folk, bereft of any self respect and the playthings of their imaginations, because we lost our souls by giving over to Jesus and Moses. Why be surprised when Mohammed just waltzes in with our own insistence, to rape German and Swedish women en masse while our pure Nordic children are considered "life unworthy of life"?

Behind Italy, France and Germany as the future EU bedrock were the vehicles for this Dark Ages cloud only because of the Papal "Donations" of Constantine and Pepin, so since Scandinavia and Denmark principally waged wars of liberation called "Viking raids", in the wake of the failure of Widukind, as in Vercingetorix before, you cannot avoid the heart of their interest in perversion being Mother North. Wherever resistance was or is strongest to disinterest in their true believer fanaticism, they deem it their "missionary" authority to stamp out in the name of their false "family values" ideology, which destroys the will to live for enslaved folks everywhere. Their idea of afterlife is sexless (Jesus says no husbands and wives exist there, although Joseph Smith has claimed the extreme opposite) and so are souls without gender (Galatians 3:28 explains all this "trans" tomfoolery) in their mind, so this is the cause of non-binary fantasies taking root, since sex is dirty to them and indeed, they popularise mutilation of sex organs (the "holy prepuce"...) and spreading erectile dysfunction while claiming celibacy is ideal. Look what their high priest demanded of Saul and David as trophies, when slaughtering scores of Gentile Philistines! What kind of future is there without an organic biological basis to society, as now it has come to down to playing gods within petri dishes?
