Teen who recorded George Floyd’s murder gets special Pulitzer Prize citation

The teen who used her cellphone to record former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin murdering George Floyd last year received a special citation Friday from the Pulitzer Prize Board for her “transformative” footage seen around the world.

Darnella Frazier, then 17, has said she was having a “normal” day May 25, 2020, while walking with her cousin to a corner store — before witnessing and taping Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than 9 minutes. The then-cop killed the handcuffed black man, who had been accused of trying to pass a counterfeit bill.

Mindy Marqués, co-chair of the Pulitzer board, said in a video announcing its annual awards that 2020 was “unlike any other in the history of journalism,” citing the global pandemic, a “racial reckoning” and the bitter November US presidential election.

“The Floyd story in particular highlighted not only the essential role of journalists, but the increasing importance of ordinary citizens in the quest for truth and justice,” Marqués said during the 2021 prize announcement before noting Frazier’s special citation.

Marqués said the 18-year-old woman’s harrowing cellphone footage “jolted viewers and spurred protests” against police brutality, beginning in Minneapolis and quickly spreading across the US and ultimately worldwide.

Frazier’s special citation — noted at the end of Friday’s announcement marking the board’s 105th year of the prizes in journalism, books, drama and music — applauded the teen for “courageously recording” Floyd’s murder.

The viral footage Frazier posted to Facebook highlighted the “crucial role of citizens in journalist’s quest for truth and justice,” the Pulitzer Prize Board said.

The 10-minute video Frazier recorded is still visible on her profile but has a “sensitive content” warning on it.

“They killed him right in front of cup foods over south on 38th and Chicago!!” Frazier wrote in the history-altering post alongside two broken-heart emojis. “No type of sympathy #POLICEBRUTALITY”

Prosecutors are seeking a 30-year prison sentence for Chauvin, who was convicted in April of murdering Floyd. The former cop’s sentencing is set for June 25.

Frazier, who broke down in court while testifying at Chauvin’s trial, recalled the day that forever changed her life on the one-year anniversary of Floyd’s murder in May.

“I was only 17 at the time, just a normal day for me walking my 9-year-old cousin to the corner store, not even prepared for what I was about to see, not even knowing my life was going to change on this exact day in those exact moments … it did,” Frazier wrote in her most recent Facebook post. “It changed me. It changed how I viewed life. It made me realize how dangerous it is to be Black in America.”

Frazier said the “weight and trauma” of witnessing Floyd’s police-custody killing had stayed with her a year later.

“It’s a little easier now, but I’m not who I used to be,” Frazier wrote on May 25. “A part of my childhood was taken from me.”

The National Association of Black Journalists praised Frazier for her Pulitzer award, tweeting that she “helped change the world.”

Frazier and her publicist did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment from The Post on Friday.

It may be a move to clap several flies with one hit. The issues you raised, but also a market restructuring. Defund the police, get more petty crime. This will especially affect small businesses who are not located in shopping centres or industrial/commercial parks. Probably situated in privately owned small investor real estate. Raising crime rates, perception of being unsafe will dry up their clientele over time. They have to shut down or move to a "more save location", which would be corporate real estate with higher rates, but got their own security. With less tenants the small investor will probably also sell, pressing the prices of that kind of real estate.

Chatherine Austin Fitts hints to this phenomenon as well:
    https://archive.org/details/catherin...lanet-lockdown

So lockdowns, BLM-pogroams, defunding police are all policy moves to expropriate moderately wealthy people, the small rich and middle class if you want. No act in parliament needed, just some policy moves and hypes as well as NGO-activity and you can get the same results without appearing to have expropriated everyone. So you still can pretend to be "free market" and "pro-property", while making a move towards centralisation. Almost brilliant, since 90% of people won't be able to look through this scheme. I say this of course in the light of the South African experience. In the olden days, you got a lot of privately owned shops, offices workshops that were not in Centres or Security parks. "After Apartheid", with exploding crime rates you got White Flight into security complexes and well, shopping malls, centres, office complexes, industrial parks, etc. popping up with huge fences and security around and in them. That was then concentrating Wealth and was a money machine for larger corporate investors that were of course politically connected as well. With the group areas act still in force, you got separate areas for each racial groups with poorer and richer areas of course. But they used to be relatively safe with a lot of small businesses at the main roads of an area. Today this is mostly gone, except for smaller towns and all the larger towns and cities got the malls and all the security complexes were you can "buy your Apartheid". They even got "pass lows", since the employees must show ID and be out of the complex at certain time.

If you're still in a city get out now. They want to defund the police let them. In a month they'll be wailing for the cops to show back up and restore order.

This is the dystopia we all knew was coming. Let them destroy the cities and be Morlocks of their dung heaps. They will breed their own destruction when we've let them. No more White saviour complex. They'll be so demoralised by their own behaviours that they'll lose any capacity of control over any situation. No social services and White man rules i.e. standards, means no welfare. They will return manageability and disposability. They want segregation again and I'm happy to oblige. They've got to exercise responsibility or lose everything of their own volition. Washing hands of the guilt trips will be a thing once again.

I agree about real estate and banks being profitable with white flight. I have noticed more compound-like living for the wealthy who hire private security to patrol their neighborhoods. The case of Trevon in Florida showed issues of "private policing" in wealthier areas so they were verbally attacked by the media about "walling off" from rest of society. I saw newly constructed towns in Florida as well that take half a million to buy into town homes or European style designed communities. The poorer workers will commute in and leave after hours. These places have no crime as they are located away from high immigrant and black cities.

Commencement speaker under fire for warning of ‘racism’ and ‘white supremacy’

A Virginia school district has gained national attention over its commencement speaker’s controversial speech telling graduates they were entering a world of “racism, extreme versions of individualism and capitalism, [and] white supremacy.”

Abrar Omeish, the sole Muslim member of the Fairfax County School Board in Virginia, delivered the commencement address at Justice High School in Falls Church, Va., last Monday.

Her speech, first reported by the Daily Wire, began by congratulating the class of 2021 in English, Arabic and Spanish.

“Today we checked off a box in your academic journey. As a human being, you have developed and you have grown,” she said before shifting her tone from inspirational to political.

“We struggle with human greed, racism, extreme versions of individualism and capitalism, white supremacy growing wealth gaps, disease, climate crisis, extreme poverty amidst luxury and waste right next door,” she told the graduates. “And the list goes on.”

“You understand that social justice is only political for those that can afford to ignore it. You understand that ‘neutral’ is another word for complicit. And you have made a choice to take a stand,” Omeish continued.

The commencement speaker went on to give the graduates some advice.

“The world may try to quiet you by deciding for you what’s cool, what’s weird, what is or isn’t objective. It may try to convince you that what you hold dear is too different to be accepted,” she said, asking, “But who gets to decide?”

“Every part of your being may scream in rage at the ways others have wronged you,” the school board member warned. Students, she continued, should “let compassion for your fellow human beings, not anger or rage — and believe me, this is hard to do — fuel you.”

Omeish’s speech was preceded by an introduction from the president of the student government. The student body president noted that their next speaker was “Virginia co-chair for the Bernie Sanders campaign,” as well as the daughter of Esam Omeish, “leader and a board member of the Dar al-Hijrah Islamic Center [who] raised his daughter to be an outspoken woman.”

The Dar al-Hijrah Islamic Center, a mosque, was attended by two of the Sept. 11 hijackers, the radical imam Anwar Al-Awlaki and Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan.

The high school did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

Speaking to the network’s “Fox & Friends” Tuesday morning, former Wall Street Journal columnist Asra Nomani called Omeish’s speech “depressing.”

“It was just really depressing. It was indicative of this radicalization that is happening within school boards and school districts and schools across the country, from principals to teachers to political operatives like [Omeish],” the former columnist said.

She added that she knew Omeish “very well” and both were Muslims.

“She gave that speech but the script was written years ago.”

Federal Reserve Instructs Employees to Avoid ‘Biased Terms’ Like ‘Founding Fathers'

The Federal Reserve has directed employees to use “bias-free language” and avoid using terms it believes show bias, such as “Founding Fathers,” according to a new report.

The Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors issued the instructions to all employees nationwide on April 29, according to Fox News.

“Bias-free language recognizes diversity and avoids stereotyping, demeaning, or excluding people on the basis of gender, race, ethnic group, religion, age, ability/disability, or sexual orientation,” the guidance reportedly reads.

“Try to avoid words and phrases that may be considered offensive, pejorative, or prejudiced (whether consciously or unconsciously), as these can distract your audience from the ideas/information you’re trying to convey,” it adds.

The directive contains a list of “biased terms” to avoid, such as “blacklist,” “grandfathered,” and “Founding Fathers.” Employees are instead asked to use terms like “denied,” “legacy,” and “Founders,” respectively.

It goes on to suggest that the terms “whitelisted,” “manpower,” “manmade,” be replaced with more “bias-free” alternatives such as “allowed” and “artificial.” The guidance also asks employees to avoid “singular generic pronouns,” such as “he,” “she,” “his,” and “hers,” in favor of a more inclusive “they,” “their,” and “theirs.”

The directive came not long after Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, the top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, issued a word of caution against “mission creep” at the Fed’s regional banks earlier this year.

In a letter to the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Toomey questioned the bank’s focus on climate change and racial equality.

“The Federal Reserve’s independence and careful adherence to nonpartisanship has allowed it to avoid being seen as a politicized body,” he wrote.

He also criticized central bank writings, including a “racial equity primer” it published on Medium last year.

“The Federal Reserve may pursue mission creep or welcome itself to political capture,” he added. “But such activities are inconsistent with its statutory responsibilities.”

Portland Police: Calm Down Everyone, The Man We Shot Was White!

Portland police late Thursday night issued a statement clarifying that the person they allegedly shot in the back while he was running from them “armed” with a screwdriver outside a motel in Northeast Portland was white and not a person of color as antifa had claimed.

Olympic hammer thrower Gwen Berry ‘pissed’ national anthem was playing at Olympic trials

A U.S. hammer thrower turned away from the American flag as the national anthem played while she and two other athletes stood on the podium at the Olympic trials Saturday, later saying she was “pissed” the “Star-Spangled Banner” played as she received her bronze medal.

Gwen Berry — who qualified for her second U.S. Olympic team during the trials — shifted to face the stands rather than the flag before holding up a black shirt that read, “Activist Athlete.”

“I feel like it was a set-up, and they did it on purpose,” Berry said of the anthem being played. “I was pissed, to be honest.

“They had enough opportunities to play the national anthem before we got up there,” Berry said in Oregon, where the trials are being held. “I was thinking about what I should do. Eventually I stayed there and I swayed, I put my shirt over my head.

Despite her own questionable antics while her nation’s anthem played, Berry called out the Olympic trial organizers as being inappropriate — to her. “It was real disrespectful,” she said.

‘”I didn’t really want to be up there,” she said. “Like I said, it was a setup. I was hot, I was ready to take my pictures and get into some shade.”

And so, while winner DeAnna Price and second-place finisher Brooke Andersen stood still on the podium with their hands over their hearts and stared straight ahead at the American and Oregon flags, Berry fidgeted and paced on the third step. Then turned away. And finally grabbed her T-shirt.

“They said they were going to play it before we walked out, then they played it when we were out there,” Berry said. “But I don’t really want to talk about the anthem because that’s not important. The anthem doesn’t speak for me. It never has.”

“My purpose and my mission is bigger than sports,” Berry said. “I’m here to represent those … who died due to systemic racism. That’s the important part. That’s why I’m going. That’s why I’m here today.”

A USA Track and Field rep disputed Berry’s characterization of the anthem playing.

“The national anthem was scheduled to play at 5:20 p.m. today,” said spokeswoman Susan Hazzard. “We didn’t wait until the athletes were on the podium for the hammer throw awards. The national anthem is played every day according to a previously published schedule.”

Unlike at the Olympics, the national anthem is not played during medal ceremonies at the Olympic trials. It has been played once per day at a set time. On Saturday, the music started at 5:25.

Berry’s Star Spangled-snub rankled many Americans, who posted their displeasure on social med

“We’re going to see more of this,” said author and activist Dinesh D’Souza.

“It’s going to make patriotic Americans cheer for foreign competitors and against the anti-American Americans.”

“What is wrong with people?” wondered former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

“Growing up, everyone stood for the American flag. Didn’t matter your politics, race, sex, income, religion; everyone stood for the flag. It was one of those civic rituals that brought us together,” he added. “It still should today.”

Radio talk host Mark Davis says Berry “needs to learn that it’s not about the anthem ‘speaking for her,’ it’s about a moment of gratitude for this country that makes her Olympic dream possible.”

    “Shameful self-absorption,” he added.

This isn’t the first time Berry has caused controversy.

US Olympic athletes were prohibited in January 2020 from making political statements during anthems, after Berry was put on probation for raising her fist during the Pan-American Games in Peru in August 2019. US Olympic and Paralympic Committee in April reversed course, allowing kneeling and other forms of protests during the national anthem.

Berry’s protest follows a long line of professional athletes –Olympic and otherwise — using the national anthem as a tool to protest racism.

Most famously, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, two black track and field athletes, raised their fists, each clad in a black glove, as “The Star-Spangled Banner” played while they stood on the podium.

More recently, NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2016 began taking a knee when the national anthem played before games, to protest police brutality.
