If you reject your Christian or heathen fore-bearers you are a contemptible hypocrite.

I've nothing at all against my praise-worthy ancestors who belonged to the Old Religion but, as a Catholic, I cannot believe as they did.

All well and good, but how to reconcile their positions? They cancel each other out if truly upholding their beliefs. How then do we validate them? Think of two egomaniacal parents who hate each other and compete for the affections of their child, each demanding loyalty at the expence of the other. How does a child move forward from a divided past and fairly support the good sides of both yet remain uncommitted to their bad ones? Furthermore, how can one not be spiritually crippled from only siding with one of two equally valuable contributions to one's life? One could not come to us without the other, any more than one is born into the world with only one parent.
