My aunt's boyfriend is sick in the hospital and now he has COVID-19 too. I don't know of anyone else who has it.

Americans may soon lose beer, seltzer and SODA as CO2 supplies go flat because of drops in ethanol production during the pandemic - with 34 out of 45 US plants cutting down.

Dwindling supplies of carbon dioxide from ethanol plants is sparking concern about shortages of beer, soda and seltzer water - 'essentials' for many quarantined Americans.

The lack of ethanol output is disrupting this highly specialized corner of the food industry, as 34 of the 45 U.S. ethanol plants that sell CO2 have idled or cut production, according to Renewable Fuels Association Chief Executive Geoff Cooper.

Brewers and soft-drink makers use carbon dioxide, or CO2, for carbonation, which gives beer and soda fizz. Ethanol producers are a key provider of CO2 to the food industry, as they capture that gas as a byproduct of ethanol production and sell it in large quantities.

But ethanol, which is blended into the nation's gasoline supply, has seen production drop sharply due to the drop in gasoline demand as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gasoline demand is down by more than 30 per cent in the United States.

CO2 suppliers to beer brewers have increased prices by about 25 per cent due to reduced supply, said Bob Pease, chief executive officer of the Brewers Association. The trade group represents small and independent U.S. craft brewers, who get about 45 per cent of their CO2 from ethanol producers.

'The problem is accelerating. Every day we're hearing from more of our members about this,' said Pease, who expects some brewers to start cutting production in two to three weeks.

In an April 7 letter to Vice President Mike Pence, the Compressed Gas Association (CGA) said production of CO2 had fallen about 20% and could be down by 50% by mid-April without relief, CGA CEO Rich Gottwald said. Meat producers are also feeling the pinch, as they use CO2 in processing, packaging, preservation and shipment.

Orion Melehan, CEO of Santa Cruz, California-based LifeAID, a specialty beverage company, said two of his production partners are looking for alternative CO2 sources.

'It does have us up at night figuring out what our options are,' Melehan said. 'It highlights the laws of unintended consequences.'

A spokeswoman for National Beverage Corp, whose products include LaCroix, said the company sources from a number of national CO2 suppliers and does not anticipate a supply issue.

Coca-Cola Co, SodaStream owner PepsiCo Inc, wine and beer seller Constellation Brands Inc and several bottling companies did not respond to requests for comment.

Walker Modic, environmental and social sustainability manager for Bell's Brewery, said the Comstock, Michigan-based brewing company had 'not experienced any curtailments or changes in the source of our CO2.'

If nothing else we may benefit in the long term from the domestic unrest that shutdown/stay-at-home orders are causing. I think this will hurt the Democrats more then the Republicans in November.

1/4 of the people who have died in New York (State) were residents of nursing homes or long term care facilities. The very, very old and the very, very sick. I don't know what it is for the rest of the US but less then a dozen persons (in the US) under the age of 24 have died so far. Out of 40,000 deaths.

So far 1/5 of those tested in the US have been positive for covid-19, I guess the rest had the flu or colds. In Arizona to get approved to be tested you have to be symptomatic - more then just mild - and have underlying conditions like diabetes or hypertension. I was told by my doctor that based on the number of persons who had had the flu shot over the last six months but were symptomatic (like myself), but not tested, that likely less then 5% of persons who had/have covid-19 are actually showing up in the official statistics. Add in those who were/are asymptomatic it could be as little as 2%.

What kind of domestic unrest have you been seeing over there? I haven't seen any reports of anything serious going down, save for the occasional tug-of-war over toilet paper.

Maybe demonstrations and opposition signify unrest? 40% of Americans don't back the lockdown. The longer the lockdown lasts, the more numerous that group will be. As will be the number of people suffering from the measures. Riots are inevitable if Covid-19 remains with us for years and lockdown measures are sometimes relaxed only to come back in full force.

Violence towards the authorities is on the rise too, it's mostly migrant violence.

The coronavirus could linger in the testicles, making men prone to longer, more severe cases of the illness, according to a new study.

Researchers tracked the recovery of 68 patients in Mumbai, India, to study the gender disparity of the virus, which has taken a worse toll on men, according to a preliminary report posted on MedRxix, which hosts unpublished medical research papers that have not been peer reviewed.

Dr. Aditi Shastri, an oncologist at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, and her mother, Dr. Jayanthi Shastri — a microbiologist at the Kasturba Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Mumbai — said the virus attaches itself to a protein that occurs in high levels in the testicles.

This protein, known as angiotensin converting enzyme 2, or ACE2, is present in the lungs, the gastrointestinal tract and the heart in addition to large quantities in the testicles.

But since testicles are walled off from the immune system, the virus could harbor there for longer periods than the rest of the body, according to the study.

The mother-daughter researchers said these findings may explain why women bounce back from the virus more quickly than men.

They determined that the average amount of time for female patients to be cleared of the virus was four days, while men saw recoveries that on average were two days longer, the report said.

“These observations demonstrate that male subjects have delayed viral clearance,” the authors wrote, adding that the testicles may be serving as “reservoirs” for the virus.

The study may offer an explanation for reports out of Italy, South Korea, and New York City that men are dying at higher rates from the virus.

Others have suggested that men are more vulnerable because they are more likely to smoke, have high blood pressure or suffer coronary artery disease.

US alerted Israel, NATO to disease outbreak in China in November — TV report

White House was reportedly not interested in the intel, but it was passed onto NATO, IDF; when it reached Israel’s Health Ministry, ‘nothing was done’

US intelligence agencies alerted Israel to the coronavirus outbreak in China already in November, Israeli television reported Thursday.

According to Channel 12 news, the US intelligence community became aware of the emerging disease in Wuhan in the second week of that month and drew up a classified document.

Information on the disease outbreak was not in the public domain at that stage — and was known only apparently to the Chinese government.

US intelligence informed the Trump administration, “which did not deem it of interest,” but the report said the Americans also decided to update two allies with the classified document: NATO and Israel, specifically the IDF.

The network said Israeli military officials later in November discussed the possibility of the spread of the virus to the region and how it would affect Israel and neighboring countries.

The intelligence also reached Israel’s decision makers and the Health Ministry, where “nothing was done,” according to the report.

Last week, ABC News reported that US intelligence officials were warning about the coronavirus in a report prepared in November by the American military’s National Center for Medical Intelligence.

It was unclear if that was the same report that was said to have been shared with Israel.

Colonel Shane Day, the NCMI director, denied last week that any such report existed. “As a matter of practice the National Center for Medical Intelligence does not comment publicly on specific intelligence matters,” he said. “However, in the interest of transparency during this current public health crisis, we can confirm that media reporting about the existence/release of a National Center for Medical Intelligence Coronavirus-related product/assessment in November of 2019 is not correct. No such NCMI product exists.”

In its first major step to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, Israel announced on January 30 it was barring all flights from China, ten days after Chinese leader Xi Jinping issued his first public comments on the virus and the Asian country’s top epidemiologist said for the first time it could be spread from person to person.

An Associated Press report on Wednesday said Xi’s warning came seven days after Chinese officials secretly determined that they were likely facing a pandemic, potentially costing China and other countries valuable time to prepare for the outbreak.

Doctors in Wuhan, the city at the center of the outbreak in China, are reported to have first tried to have warn about the virus in December, but were censored.

The Chinese government has repeatedly denied suppressing information in the early days, saying it immediately reported the outbreak to the World Health Organization.

The US media generally supports the authoritarian orders against the US public.

The first video is absolutely cringe.

These “protests” are astroturfed by conservative PACs funded by the likes of Betsy Devos. Fox News is quite literally advertising them. These are simply another side of the kosher sandwich. Anyone who supports them is misguided, like the Tea Party was in 2009. It’s all Jewish

As we speak, oil prices in the U.S. are collapsing by more than 100%. Now producers have to pay to have people take the oil off the hands. If this is allowed to continue, it will wipe out large parts of the U.S. unconventional oil and gas industry, which will be very bad for people in the U.S. Then, when the economy is supposed to restarted, where will the oil companies be? In Chapter 11. And so will many other businesses. Good luck restarting with half the economy without any cash and in Chapter 11. The banks will not be eager to lend money to that mess.

As I have written above, the problems caused by the lock-down will only grow and multiply, feeding on each other. Which sector will go next? Just sit tight, wait, and see.
