    Battle of Jutland

The Battle of Jutland - Royal Navy vs. German Imperial Navy I THE GREAT WAR

The Battle of Jutland or the Skagerrakschlacht was arguably the biggest naval battle in history and a turning point of World War 1 as the German High Seas Fleet failed to break through the Royal Navy's blockade of the North Sea. The set trap of U-Boats fails to spring and even though more British ships were lost in the battle, it was a strategical defeat for the Germans.

It was definitely the biggest naval battle of all times (only Trafalgar, Midway, Salamis and Lepanto can compete with Jutland) and the Royal Navy never fully recovered from the outcome. Even today the RN is dealing with the dubious legacy of that battle - and when the battle was over it wasn't clear yet that it was a strategic victory for the British Empire. The RN couldn't know at the time that the Hochseeflotte would never set sail again back in 1916. Historians are still arguing about who truly won the battle but the Germans definitely scored a psychological victory back in 1916. Not outright winning the engagement and tactical setbacks came as a shock to the Brits who had completely dominated naval warfare for a century by 1916. It hurt their confidence in their own capabilities.
