    Icelandic Extinct After 100 Years

There is real danger of the Icelandic language having disappeared in a 100 years time, because we can’t use it in some of the most important areas of our everyday life.

Eiríkur Rögnvaldsson, professor of Icelandic grammar, made this claim in TV show Orðbragð, on RÚV.

He points out that our everyday lives are becoming more and more dependent on devices operated by computer technology, devices that more frequently are operated with voice command.

“The more our everyday lives become a field where we can’t use our mother tongue – which is not something happening to an isolated group of people, but all Icelanders – the more danger it is that people give up on the language, thinking: ‘Why bother learning this language, why don’t we just switch over and start using English so we can be competitive in a modern world?’”

According to a research that Eiríkur participated in, the danger of this is real.

A 2012 report on the status of 30 European languages showed whether software exists to enable those speaking the languages to use only their mother tongue when using IT.

The Icelandic language was classified as a language in danger of digital death, ranking 29th, with only Maltese being in more danger of becoming digitally extinct.

“It’s very understandable that Icelandic is in such a bad place because it’s just as expensive to translate software and databases for 300,000 people as it is for a group of 300 million. And it’s obvious we’ll never be able to adjust all the databases or software that exist in the more spread out languages. But I do believe that unless we make an effort, or at least try to catch up with this trend, there’s real danger of the Icelandic language being extinct in 100 years,” Eiríkur told RÚV.

This evolution has been likened to the overturn following the printing technology, noting that the languages that didn’t adapt to the print culture are more or less extinct today.

Since the report was published however, the Icelandic Organization of the Visually Impaired has had an Icelandic speech synthesizer made, that reads Icelandic texts out loud.

And Google has made effort in providing Icelandic voice command for computers and some types of mobile phones.

“But we don’t have any control over this; it is Google that own this technology and we can’t use it for just any devices we have here. Google can decide at any point to stop offering this service or start charging us for it or whatever. We need to create our own software, that we have ownership of and can use however we like,” Eiríkur said.

Very little has moved in that direction since the report was published. It was discussed briefly in Parliament but no funding followed.

Voice commands? I don't think I've ever used one, or seen anyone do it in real life. Besides, I think in 5-10 years time, any software or operating system can automatically translate itself into any language one pleases. Technology will make it easier and more practical to preserve and practice one's native language, not the other way around.

This is news from 2013. Now, 6 years later, still not using voice commands or seeing anyone around me doing so. Besides that, yes, Icelandic is on its decline, but this has nothing to do with voice commands or technology in a more general way, but immigrants to this country and TOURISTS. Iceland is selling itself out, now even street signs (including the names of the streets!, not just descriptive signs such as warnings etc) are in English, a custom I am yet to witness in any other country of the world. You also cannot order in Icelandic in restaurants anymore but get a "Sorry, can you speak English" from the Romanian/Polish/Czech/whatsover waitress. HORRIBLE.

For some reason, vacations to Iceland from the US are extremely cheap. I haven't been myself, but know more people than I thought I would who have been to Iceland of all places.

Just tell them (in Icelandic) to get the hell out of your country.

I don't think Iceland has much force to say anything to anybody. As NATO (or Trump) is saving costs like a real cool US-businessman ... ups I meant ''a president of world class'' ... air surveillance of Iceland has gone down. Actually so low level that Icelanders went and asked help from Sweden and Finland (non NATO countries) if planes of those countries could also patrol behalf of Iceland (and not only NATO planes).

(and just lately defense minister of Norway has showed some interest to discuss about co-operation possibilities with Sweden and Finland ... first time after WWII).

I meant that Blutwülfin should say that to the Eastern European waitresses.

Oh, I see ... yes. Population of Iceland is so small that even pretty small numbers of foreigners could cause dramatic changes on it ... any longer run.

If they would really need new people ... they should first try to hire/recruit
    1.) Norwegians
    2.) Danes/Swedes
    3.) Scots & Irish

... and maybe not much any others.

PS: It is someway interesting to hear that Iceland has lots of Eastern Europeans. If I remember correctly Þoreiðar once mentioned about the same in Norway (Poles construction workers, welders etc.). And both of these 2 countries doesn't belong to EU. Makes me thinking ... getting out of EU (alone) would not be enough (thinking mainly Brexit here). You should also change lot more...

I guess you haven't heard about Þorskastríðin (the Cod Wars), then, when Icelandic fishermen kept the British navy at bay time and time again, by the end of it all having increased the country's territorial waters like tenfold.
-In kalte Schatten versunken...

Indeed. While no one is mentioning the millions of Pakistani, Indians, Africans and what not that swarm to Britain, Brexit reinstalls a "hard border" between North Ireland and the Irish Republic, will most likely, at least in the long run, lead to Scotland breaking away from the UK (because they want to remain in EU) and kicks out Poles and other Europeans. Vice versa Brits applying in record numbers for German citizenship. It doesnt solve the non-European immigration problem at all, they dont even address it. Methinks, Poles are not exactly their problem

They're just the scapegoat to increase anti-white propaganda while promoting "diversity" with blacks and moslems.
