Suicide (non-)watch: What we know about Jeffrey Epstein’s death...and what we don’t

The apparent suicide of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein immediately spawned allegations of prison negligence and even murder – and no wonder, given the confusing, scarce data available. Here’s what we know.

It’s been confirmed that Epstein was found dead in his cell in the special housing unit of New York’s Metropolitan Correctional Center on Saturday morning at around 6:30am EST.

    ‘Apparent suicide’

Lifesaving measures were “initiated immediately by responding staff,” and Epstein was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the Bureau of Prisons said on Saturday. The Bureau called his death an “apparent suicide,” althought an investigation has yet to determine this conclusively.

A number of officials told media outlets that Epstein had hanged himself in his cell, but no one, at the time of writing, has confirmed this publicly.

An FBI investigation has also been opened, and Attorney General William Barr later announced a Justice Department probe into Epstein’s death, which he also called an “apparent suicide.”

The 66-year-old, a convicted pedophile, had been held at the New York prison since his arrest last month on child sex trafficking and conspiracy charges. He pled not guilty to the charges, which carried a penalty of up to 45 years in prison.
    Was he on suicide watch?

At the time of his death, Epstein was rumored to have been on suicide watch. According to Bureau of Prisons policy, inmates on suicide watch are to be kept under “direct, continuous observation,” in a room that allows “unobstructed vision of the inmate at all times.”

Epstein was supposedly kept under this supervision after he was found semi-conscious on the floor of his cell two weeks ago, with marks on his neck. Speculation in the media immediately turned to how a man on suicide watch could have possibly killed himself. According to BOP policy, in addition to the constant monitoring, a suicidal inmate’s cell “may not have fixtures or architectural features” that would enable self-harm, such as hooks or bunks that could be used to tie a rope around.

However, one source told Reuters that Epstein had been taken off suicide watch some time since his first apparent attempt on his own life. Photos published by the New York Post lend some credence to this report, as they show Epstein’s body being wheeled into hospital on a gurney, clad in the standard-issue prison jumpsuit, instead of the paper dress or ‘suicide smock’ usually given to these inmates.

    Camera malfunction?!

Regardless, inmates at MCC are said to be checked-in-on every 30 minutes throughout the night. When guards are away on their patrols, video surveillance usually picks up the slack. However, BOP policy does not mandate video surveillance of either suicide watch or regular cells.

According to a report by a former Al Qaeda prisoner, however, MCC staff monitor high-security cells with two video cameras, one above the shower and another above the toilet or bed. Epstein had been kept in this same extra-security area of the prison, a New York Times source said.

Additionally, a BOP audit last year found that cameras are “placed strategically throughout the institution,” and are “sufficient” to ensure the safety of inmates and staff.

Rumors circulated on Saturday that the cameras supposedly monitoring Epstein had mysteriously “malfunctioned” at the time of his death, adding fuel to the theories of foul play already circulating. However, these rumors can be traced back to an unsubstantiated tweet by right wing commenter Michael Coudrey, which was picked up and spread by a suspicious public.

Though it may still emerge that there was a “camera malfunction” overnight, that claim has not yet been verified.
    What happens next?

Pending further investigation, rumors will likely continue to circulate. Epstein’s death came at a suspicious time, occurring just one day after court documents were unsealed alleging that Epstein had procured young girls for some of the world’s most powerful and wealthiest men, including British prince Andrew, billionaire investor Glenn Dubin, former governor of New Mexico Bill Richardson, and a number of other unnamed foreign political and business figures.

As Epstein was the only defendant in the case against him, the trail now goes cold.

However, in a court filing last month, the government said it was pursuing an "ongoing investigation of uncharged individuals" connected to Epstein, and US Attorney Geoffrey Berman confirmed on Saturday that the investigation will continue despite Epstein’s death.

Prison experts are stunned and angry that Jeffrey Epstein was taken off suicide watch

"For them to pull him off suicide watch is shocking,” one former federal prison warden told NBC News.

Even before his first suspected suicide try last month, Jeffrey Epstein was perhaps the most vulnerable man in the federal jail system: a politically-connected financier accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls. He was, by all accounts, the kind of inmate that should have been under the closest possible supervision.

Instead, Epstein was taken off suicide watch in the days before he took his own life, officials told NBC News, a decision that baffled former wardens and veterans of the federal prison system.

"For them to pull him off suicide watch is shocking,” Cameron Lindsay, a former warden who worked at three federal facilities, told NBC News. “For someone this high-profile, with these allegations and this many victims, who has had a suicide attempt in the last few weeks, you can take absolutely no chances. You leave him on suicide watch until he’s out of there.”

Epstein, 66, was placed on suicide watch after he was found passed out in his jail cell with marks on his neck inside the Metropolitan Correctional Center on July 23, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The conditions would have required him to be moved to a special bare-bones cell where he would be outfitted in a tear-resistant one-piece smock and receive stepped-up observation from a staffer or inmate posted outside, according to Lindsay and sources familiar with Epstein’s case.

But Epstein’s status was changed sometime in the last two weeks for reasons that remain unknown, officials told NBC News. The decision would normally have to have been authorized by the jail’s suicide prevention program coordinator, who is ordinarily the institution’s chief psychologist, and approved by the warden.

“Once an inmate has been placed on watch, the watch may not be terminated, under any circumstance, without the program coordinator or designee performing a face-to-face evaluation,” according to the federal Bureau of Prison official guidelines issued in 2007.

Epstein was discovered inside his cell about 6:30 a.m., and some union officials noted that many facilities operate with limited staffing overnight. The local federal prison union head in New York has previously complained about staffing shortages at the Metropolitan Correctional Center.

The FBI is investigating the case, law enforcement officials told NBC News. The Bureau of Prisons will also launch an internal “after-action” probe, according to department veterans.

“It’s too early to say what I think should happen, but if this did occur as we believe that it did, some staff are going to have some hard questions to answer, I’m afraid,” said Lindsay, who served as warden at the nearby Metropolitan Detention Center from 2007 to 2009.

Bob Hood, a former federal Bureau of Prisons chief of internal affairs and former warden at the ADX Florence "supermax" prison in Colorado, said he also was perplexed by the decision to remove the suicide safeguards.

“Under the circumstances, I would have a staff member sitting there or have a camera on him 24/7 while he was in my custody, purely to cover my butt,” said Hood. “I know that sounds tacky, but this is not your average inmate.”

Attorney General William Barr issued a statement expressing concern over the case, saying he was appalled and that Epstein’s death “raises serious questions that must be answered.”

Former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein also weighed in. “Detained pedophiles require special attention,” he tweeted. “Stopping people from harming themselves is difficult.”

Epstein has been held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center since July 6, when he was arrested on charges of trafficking and sexually abusing dozens of underage girls in the early 2000s. Epstein’s lawyers requested that he be allowed to await trial under house arrest at his $77 million Manhattan mansion, but a judge denied the request.

The MCC, as the facility is known, houses 763 inmates and is considered one of the harshest federal detention centers in the country. Epstein paid his lawyers to visit him nearly every day, allowing him to leave his cell and spend much of the day at a room designated for attorney meetings, according to sources familiar with his case.

New York City's chief medical examiner released a statement Sunday evening saying an autopsy has been performed on Epstein, but that more information is needed before a cause of death determination is made.

Dr. Barbara Sampson said a city medical examiner performed the autopsy Sunday while a private pathologist observed the examination at the request of Epstein's representatives.

The private pathologist, Dr. Michael Baden, was the city's chief medical examiner in the late 1970s and has been called as an expert witness in high-profile cases including by the defense at O.J. Simpson's 1994 murder trial.

Sampson said having a private pathologist observe an autopsy is a routine practice.

Multiple people briefed on the Jeffrey Epstein death investigation say that suicide remains the presumed cause of death for the financier and accused sex offender.

Former MCC inmate: There’s ‘no way’ Jeffrey Epstein killed himself

    Source: NYPost

There’s no way that man could have killed himself. I’ve done too much time in those units. It’s an impossibility.

Between the floor and the ceiling is like eight or nine feet. There’s no way for you to connect to anything.

You have sheets, but they’re paper level, not strong enough. He was 200 pounds — it would never happen.

When you’re on suicide watch, they put you in this white smock, a straight jacket. They know a person cannot be injurious to themselves.

The clothing they give you is a jump-in uniform. Everything is a dark brown color.

Could he have done it from the bed? No sir. There’s a steel frame, but you can’t move it. There’s no light fixture. There’s no bars.

They don’t give you enough in there that could successfully create an instrument of death. You want to write a letter, they give you rubber pens and maybe once a week a piece of paper.

Nothing hard or made of metal.

There’s up to 80 people there. They could put two in cell. It’s one or two, but I’ll never believe this guy had a cellmate. He was too blown up.

The damage that unit can do to someone.

It’s like you’re an animal and you’ve been brought into a kennel. A guy like Jeffrey, it’s like, “Holy sh-t.”

I told my parents not to come there. God wasn’t in the building.

I’ve had some heavy incidents in the building. What happened is permanent.

Some of the guards are on a major power trip. They know guys there are suffering. They know something the rest of the world hasn’t seen, that a place like this exists in this country, and they get off on it.

If the guards see that the guy is breaking, they’re going to help you break.

But it’s my firm belief that Jeffrey Epstein did not commit suicide. It just didn’t happen.

Queen Elizabeth’s Son Might Be Dragged Deeper Into Epstein Probe After Sex Offender’s Death – Report

US financier and socialite Jeffrey Epstein apparently took his own life at a New York prison, where he had been held since last month on child sex trafficking and conspiracy charges. The news came just hours after a bulk of documents, raising suspicions against Epstein’s powerful friends, including Prince Andrew, were released.

Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, may come under new scrutiny following suspected sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s suicide, the Daily Mail claims, citing an unnamed legal source. According to the outlet, following the death of the prime suspect, an FBI probe could now focus their “full attention” on his suspected associate, British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, said to have also been friends with the British royal.

“Ghislaine is the key to all this now that Epstein will no longer face justice himself. The victims deserve answers and she was the person closest to Epstein. Far from being the end to Prince Andrew's problems, Epstein's suicide could put him under renewed scrutiny because of his close friendship with Ghislaine”, the legal source, said to be close to the investigation noted.

These claims echoed the statements by lawyer Jack Scarola, representing the alleged victims, who expressed hope that Epstein’s “possible co-conspirators” would be investigated.

“I would certainly think, based upon all the information that is currently available, that Miss Maxwell is the focus of criminal investigation right now, she is a significant focus of the investigation”, he said.

The 57-year-old British media heiress and Epstein’s former girlfriend featured in the recently unsealed court documents from Epstein’s trial, suggest that she procured underage girls for his sex trafficking circuit.

In 2015, one of the alleged victims Virginia Roberts Giuffre sued Maxwell for defamation, accusing the Brit and Epstein of using her as a “sex slave” and claiming she was directed to perform sex acts with numerous famous men, one of them being Prince Andrew, eighth in line to the British throne.

Although the case was settled out of court in 2017, its documents state “an undisputed fact that multiple witnesses deposed in this case” have said that Maxwell “operated as convicted paedophile Epstein’s procurer of underage girls”. The plaintiff alleged that the British socialite “had sex with under-age girls virtually every day”, insisting that her and the billionaire’s “whole lives revolved around sex”.

The tranche of documents also includes a photo which, according to Guiffre’s attorneys, shows the royal “with his hand around Ms Giuffre’s bare waist while she was a minor child, while posing with [Maxwell], inside [Maxwell’s] house in London”, The Guardian reported.

“This particular photograph corroborates Ms Giuffre’s claims, and there is no other reasonable explanation why an American child should be in the company of adults not her kin, in the London house owned by the girlfriend of a now convicted sex offender”, Giuffre’s lawyers say in the documents.

While Maxwell has not commented on the recent events, three years ago, when these allegations first emerged, she branded them “fictitious lies and stories to make this a salacious event”.

Prince Andrew, who hasn’t been charged with anything at this time, also remains tight-lipped both on the released documents and his alleged friend’s death.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman, however, has commented on the recent event, saying to the Daily Mail: “This relates to proceedings in the United States, to which The Duke of York is not a party. Any suggestion of impropriety with underage minors is categorically untrue”.

Officials confirmed that American billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who was arrested last month on sex trafficking charges, died on Saturday. The Bureau of Prisons as well as Attorney General William Barr called his death an “apparent suicide”, although an investigation has yet to determine this conclusively. The Bureau stated that lifesaving measures were “initiated immediately by responding staff” at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in Lower Manhattan, and Epstein was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The 66-year-old financier was set to stand trial next year over multiple allegations of child sex trafficking and sexually assaulting over 30 underage girls. Epstein, who was arrested on 6 July, had pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking involving dozens of minor girls in his New York mansion and Florida estate, from at least 2002 to 2005. He faced up to 45 years in prison if convicted.

The charges were announced more than a decade after Epstein served 13 months in jail on prostitution-related charges involving underage girls.

Isn’t it obvious? Jeffrey Epstein was murdered because dead men don’t talk (about the Clintons)

This post won’t belengthy. The story is so simple that everybody here already knows what happened.

Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his jailcell at 7:30 am this morning, according to police. He was under “suicidewatch,” which was of course a designation placed on him roughly two weeks agoto set up the back story for what just happened. Jeffrey Epstein was“arkancided” / murdered for the simple reason that dead men don’t talk. And Epstein had alot to say that would have implicated Bill Clinton and dozens of high-profileglobal power brokers who happily raped young boys and girls that were providedby Epstein as part of his blackmail-based wealth creation scheme.

The hashtag #ClintonBodyCount is alreadytrending again on Twitter, and the death of Epstein raises the total number ofpeople mysteriously found dead after possessing potentially damaginginformation on the Clintons to about 70 or so. No political couple (Bill and Hillary)has left a longer trail of body bags behind them as they carried out anincreasingly treasonous series of high crimes against this nation. HillaryClinton pre-sold her anticipated presidency to the highest bidders on theinternational stage, collecting hundreds of millions of dollars in the ClintonFamily Foundation which was little more than a funnel for corruption, briberyand payoffs. Anyone who possessed information that could have exposed theClintons was mysteriously found dead. In fact, the most dangerous profession inAmerica is working for the Clintons.

Understand that if Hillary Clinton had won thepresidency, Donald Trump would right now be in prison facing charges of treasonthanks to the fact that the Obama administration had set up an elaborate, staged hoax to falsely claim that Trump was working for the Russians. The planwas to have Clinton’s DOJ charge Trump with treason, sending a message toanyone who might think about challenging the deep state ever again.

Clinton’s plan for the total rollout of anauthoritarian regime also included the mass arrests of all independent medialeaders — including myself — who would be charged with carrying out espionageby “working with the Russians” to try to steal the election for Trump. This iswhy the “PropOrNot” list was published before the election: It was actually an arrest list of websites to seize, shut down and criminally prosecute for daring to criticize Hillary Clinton orObama. When Trump became president instead of Hillary, the tech giants used thelist as a blacklist tode-platform, de-monetize and ban every website on the list. Realize that ifHillary had won the presidency, we would all be in prison right now andprobably “suicided” just like Jeffrey Epstein.

The thing is, this deep state conspiracy isstill being run by the criminal wing of the FBI, the bunkered-up Barack Obama, and Hillary loyalists inside the bureaucracy. But William Barr and Trump haveturned the tables, and we are now just monthsaway from criminal prosecutions of numerous deep state operators whowere following orders from Obama and Clinton. That’s why the deep state — whichincludes the “black hat” faction of the corrupt FBI — is now desperatelyrunning every op they can imagine, from false flag shootings tomurdering Clinton enemies who might be able to name names.

Over the next 2-3 months, you are going towitness the deep state pulling out all thestops, running every mass shooting they can initiate, and possibly evencarrying out 9/11-scale mass terrorism events on U.S. soil. Make no mistake:These are being run by the Obama / Clinton loyalists inside the FBI and otheragencies. These are the very people who are about to be criminally prosecutedby Trump’s DOJ, and they are now operating in sheer desperation mode, willingto kill anyone it takes to try to start a civil war or blame Trump for alltheir own violence.

Do not be surprised if you see bombings, masspoisonings, mass shootings and even buildings brought down. These are all beingrun by the FBI, which is America’smost experienced terrorist organization.

To get up to speed, you need to read this articlefrom All News Pipeline which reveals how the El Paso shooterwas tied to the CIA’s MKUltra assassination program.

Even Ann Coulter is now publicly sayingJeffrey Epstein “probably didn’t killhimself at all.” It’s abundantly obvious Epstein was taken out tomake sure he didn’t implicate the Clintons. Only a fool would believe theClintons aren’t involved here.

Sure, Epstein probably deserved to be takenout, and he’s now burning in Hell for his crimes against children, but theClintons have managed to silence yet another person who held damning evidenceagainst them, and America continues to be partially run by the most dangerous, treacherous crooks, pedophiles and murderers our world has ever seen. They’recalled Democrats, and they hope todestroy America, mass execute all Christians and Trump supporters, annihilatethe First and Second Amendments, and roll out an authoritarian left-wingsociety run by snowflake libtard lunatics who scream “tolerance!” while theyshoot you in the face with guns they confiscated from conservatives whostupidly wanted to “get along” with the radical Left.

Things are coming to a peak here, folks. Theday of reckoning is coming soon for the Clintons and their accomplices, including Comey, Brennan, Clapper and others. Even more shockingly, the day isalso coming that CNN will close itsdoors and shut down because it will be so utterly discredited for itscomplicity in this massive criminal conspiracy that it will have zerocredibility remaining.

There is nothing the desperate Democrats won’tdo now to try to start a civil war. They have no ethics, no limits and respectno rule of law. This is exactly why allDemocrats must be removed from power, everywhere across the country, and prosecuted for their crimes against us all.

It’s time to end the reign of terror thatDemocrats have unleashed upon America.

Isn’t it obvious? Jeffrey Epstein was murdered because...12 Aug 2019.

FBI agents swarm Jeffrey Epstein's private Caribbean island

"We were just trying to look at pretty fish ... and here we are in the middle of an FBI raid," said Kelly Quinn, the owner of Salty Dog Day Sails.

FBI agents raided Jeffrey Epstein's private island in the Caribbean on Monday in a vivid display that the probe into his alleged sex trafficking ring is continuing despite his death. A swarm of federal agents was seen fanning out across Little St. James in golf carts about 10:30 a.m.

"We were just trying to look at pretty fish and swim with turtles and here we are in the middle of an FBI raid," said Kelly Quinn, the owner of Salty Dog Day Sails, who was running a sailing charter in the area. "This has been something on our radar for years," Quinn added. "We're all really curious why it's happening now."

Two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation confirmed that the FBI launched a search of Epstein's private island home off the coast of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The search was directed by the Epstein task force led by the U.S. attorney's office for the Southern District of New York, the officials said. A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office declined to comment.

A law enforcement source said the search of Epstein's home and private island in the U.S. Virgin islands was suggested years ago, but evidently went nowhere.

The raid was launched two days after Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City. He was pronounced dead at a lower Manhattan hospital. Multiple law enforcement officials said Epstein appeared to have hanged himself, but his official cause of death is pending.

Epstein had been held at the federal jail since July 6, when he was arrested on charges of trafficking and sexually abusing girls as young as 14 in the early 2000s. He was facing up to 45 years in prison if convicted on two counts of sex trafficking and conspiracy.

Epstein purchased the picturesque island off the coast of St. Thomas for $7.95 million in 1998. He went on to build a sprawling estate featuring a 24,000-square-foot private residence, two pools, a spa and an odd blue-striped structure that has been the subject of endless online fascination.

Steve Scully, an IT worker who worked on Epstein’s island from 1999 to 2006, said he often saw young women there and the main residence was filled with photos of topless girls. "I don't know if they were kids," Scully told NBC News last month. "They looked young to me In almost every one of his — the master bedroom, the office, and the gymnasium certainly."

The investigation into Epstein's alleged sex trafficking network is continuing despite his death, multiple top law enforcement officials have said.

"To those brave young women who have already come forward and to the many others who have yet to do so, let me reiterate that we remain committed to standing for you, and our investigation of the conduct charged in the indictment — which included a conspiracy count — remains ongoing," U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said in a statement Saturday.
