Every time I utter the word Russia during conversations with people, the words Communism and Soviets come up. Most Americans have no idea what is going on in Russia. It seems to me they don't want to know because the media has failed to report on Russia. We are still brainwashed and need to take another look at that country. I dig up speeches of Putin as many as I can to know more about this leader. Do I trust him 100%? NO.
Listen to that speech.........(Megan Kelly as a moderator)
Russian interference in elections came up........among many other problems.

Was that forum in the news? I did not see it................

Remember the days of Reagan and Gorbachev, what a good start that was!

At least I won't calculate myself as American. And I'm not brainwashed either.
Why you think that Sovjet/Russian and Americans presidents/leaders have met in Helsinki 1975, 1990, 1997 and 2018.

Plus Ronald Reagan stopped in Helsinki before his trip to Moscow 1988 and same did George H. W. Bush 1992.

And for example both countries armies leaders (general Joseph F. Dunford Jr. and general Valeri Gerasimov) met in Helsinki 2018. Who knows has the same happened earlier and how many times (secretly)....

I tell you why. Mainly because Americans have wanted that (and it has fitted to Russians).
Oh, they could have met in Stockholm as well (Sweden is neutral too; not a NATO country). But they did't?
    Again any idea why?

I tell you why (part 2). Because Americans wanted to talk about Russians with Finns (before they'll meet them). As Americans thought (and knew) that Finns will know them best.

So are your telling now that you know them better than people living here?

Finns have sayings: Ryssä on Ryssä vaikka voissa paistaisi. That saying has developed as times has past (via real history and experiences). Maybe in last 700 years time. Any political system they will have will not change that!
It is in them as humans/people.

I care about what is happening these days. The past is gone. It cannot be fixed.
When Russia annexed Crimea, America and Europe found a new enemy again.
Did anybody study the history of Crimea?
Didn't Nikita khrushchev gave it away illegally to the Ukraine in 1954. Wasn't it a gift? I remember when it happened...........

What is your take on that?

When Ukraine became independent 1991 (after collapse of Sovjet Union) they gave up all their areas nuclear weapons etc. to Russians ... as Russians promised to respect their sovereignty & independence (incl. Crimea).

Nope it had not been mentioned (separately) as it was part of Ukraine 1991. Period!

Even so much that Russians went & made deal with Ukrainians ... so that Russians could use Sovjet's old Sevastopol's military base in Black Sea. If Russians thought (1991) that it actually belongs to them, they hardly had been ready to do so.

He's an 8th dan in Judo and the IJF President. My son takes part in the occasional international tournament and his ambition is to meet him one day

You are still a nice "bloke" even if we had some differences in opinions.
I had to look up the word, never heard it before..................

Illegally. Do not know. Alto the local population was not consulted, unsurprisingly. However he did added the Crimea to Ukraine as a way to appease Ukrainian nationalists, however also as sort of Trojan Horse. In order too increase the Russification of the Ukraine.

Cheers, schwab! That's very kind of you.

I must send you a PM sometime but I'll warn you now; if this is some subtle plan to get me to attend church …..
