    The Classless Society

I was in a local store earlier today when I saw a book entitled 'Brexshit'. I mentioned this to a passing assistant (who seemed to be foreign and didn’t understand the point I was making) and she fetched someone claiming to be the ‘Manager’, to whom I said that the shop should not have material such as this on prominent display …

I asked him if he thought it was appropriate for kids aged 9 or 10 (at that moment there were a couple of these conveniently present) to be seeing book covers like that? I don't expect it to be withdrawn from sale on my account but he noted my customer complaint about it being on full view right next to the children's section.

Then I got home, checked out some online newspaper headlines to see what’s happening and I stumbled across this …

Thousands of people protesting in London about Boris Johnson under the slogan FUCK BORIS with many of them wearing a T-Shirt with this obscenity emblazoned across it. What a bunch of trash!!!

But should we be unduly surprised when a (formerly respectable) political party has just adopted “Bollocks to Brexit” as its rallying call to the voters? Their supporters attend meetings with these words on their shirts and hundreds of thousands of brochures have been distributed across the country with this offensive message on them. Vince Cable, their ridiculous 76-year-old leader, thinks they're really cool …

I swear, Britain is going to the dogs! We no longer have any public standards and those in charge now use a series of crass slogans and clichés to communicate with the masses. I hate to admit this but in some respects they are right – a lot of folks in today’s dumbed-down UK do seem more receptive to short and vulgar soundbites than to rational arguments.

What a sad demise for our once-cultured nation. I remember when John Major breezed into power during the early 90’s and promised us all a ‘classless society’. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I’m just starting to realise what he meant by ‘classless’

It's just like women talking about liberating themselves. Liberating themselves from what exactly?
Well the class system is apparently dead and big surprise the people have no class.

I thought this thread would be about the idea of no classes in society

But anyway, I agree that I don't want to see cursing and swearing normalized into accepted everyday language. It's bad enough when some people say F@#$ every second word and it becomes such a habit for them that they can't even sense that they do it.

Sure, I swear at times but it's reserved for special situations that deserve it and not as part of everyday language or some public display.

Are these adults shocked when their children of 6 years start swearing and cursing ... well they should be and likely some of them aren't (since they have normalized it).

    German cuss words................

Quatsch! Schleich dich! Hau ab! Ich bin sauer. Ich bin wütend. Halt deinen Mund. Geh mir aus den Augen! Leck mich! Leck mich am Arsch! Du kannst mich! Du kannst mich gern haben! Hast (du) ein Wahn oder was? Mist! So ein Misthaufen! Ach du lieber Himmel! Lass mich in ruh!

None of these words are as bad as F@#$ you hear day in and day out everywhere you go.

Dirty cussing ist verboten in my house.

'Leck mich am Arsch' sounds far worse than the 'F' word to me.

There is of course a subjective element.

It's just like women talking about liberating themselves. Liberating themselves from what exactly?
This isn't about women, although I'll concede that they're the "swallowers of slogans" that George Orwell warned us about and it's probably no coincidence that they figure more prominently on the photos I showed.

Yes, there was a time when the working class aspired to talk and act like those above them. It may have been a bit snobbish but they looked up to those sort of people who are now behaving crudely and (whether they realise this or not) are slowly losing the public's respect.
