Wyrd is much like Hindu Dharma, and simply a law of causality. There were people in lore who did not seem religious because they "rely on their own strength". This is also considered a legitimate path for Hinduism, in which a person ascends due to "right action" and learning to discern spiritual truths for themselves (Jhana path).
So to answer the OP, belief isn't really relevant. In ancient times I doubt anyone ever denied the existence of the gods, everyone had belief. They were obligated to perform certain communal rituals, mainly offerings and giving thanks, but what they did beyond that did not matter. In India aside from the above mentioned methods there is also Bhatki, devotion to a god. This is the path I choose, but its not for everyone.
