That sword is nothing more than the word and the spirit of God.

    Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

    Ephesians 6:17

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,

    The sword in military terms...........
    Matthew 26:52-54

Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”

Holy War of Words , then ... verbal disputes allowed , but no physical violence .

The phsychological violence of supression not named in that case .
Mk 10:18 What do you call me a good master, no-one is good .

A parable, but it is something Christ said. For me there is no doubt. Time and again God has called forth the warriors, cometh the hour. From empreror's Constantine's battle for the Milivian Bridge to the sieges of Antioch and the Spanish Civil War.

As for claims of legitimacy, the Cathars also claimed apostolic succession even back to the original Apostles and thus their claim of 'legitimacy' was as strong or stronger than that of the Orthodox/Catholic Churches.
But that claim isn't strong, it isn't backed up by anything. I don't see a direct link between early Christians and Cathars, the Albigensians were former Catholics. It's similar to Protestants claiming to represent "biblical Christianity", Christianity the way it supposedly was before Christianity became more organised. Cathars could potentially identify with some early Christian groups, although not fully, not sure who Protestants can identify with back in that era except for general orthodoxy. But in that case they're breakaway churches - while God only intended to create a single church. There's a link between early Christians and the Catholic/Orthodox and Eastern churches though.
