Male footballers are ridiculously overpaid, but they're paid a lot because far more people watch men's football.

Female footballers being paid considerably less, because far few women watch that than men do men's football, is a good thing - an indication that women might be more likely to find something better to do with their time (or they could just end up watching Love Island instead, I guess)

I'm not so sure. Diego Maradona was arguably as good or even better than Messi. In 1982, he was bought by Barcelona for, at the time, the record breaking sum of 5 million pounds (around 17 million at today's rate, when adjusting for inflation). Pennies in the modern World of football. In comparison, Eden Hazard went over to Real Madrid this summer for 100-130 million euros. And he's nowhere near the fame and skill which Maradona had in his time. I can't find any numbers on what Maradona's salary looked like, but that gives at least a good pointer to just how much football has changed financially the last 30-40 years.

Perhaps Diego would have thought 5,000 euros a month to not be worth it, but twice of that? I would think so. Probably beats working as a vendor in an Argentinian slum, or even studying for 8 years to become a lawyer or a doctor.

Yes, the inflated salaries are spiralling out of control and the bubble will surely burst at some stage.

My point though is that you can't start putting wage caps on footballers or any other type of performers. Actually, 99% of professional footballers earn well below the suggested €5.000 a month already and it's only the 1% at the very top level we're talking about here, so why limit what they're allowed to earn? I don't see what we're trying to achieve by this

Standards have risen inexorably since Maradonna's day and he wouldn't be fit enough to cope with the modern game. 2019 football teams would thrash all of their 1979 counterparts, 2019 heavyweight boxers would beat those from the 1970's 'golden era' (Ali, Foreman, Frazier etc..) and if Roger Bannister were to run his 4-minute mile today he'd finish last!!

In every sport where performances can be timed or measured (eg. swimming, running, throwing & lifting events) today's athletes beat the former ones by a considerable margin. I'm sure that financial incentives have played a role in this, although there are other factors involved such as human beings becoming bigger, fitter and stronger due to improved living conditions and nutrition etc..

There are teens who are richer than Belle Delphine but I don't complain about them, just her. I don't mind the rich, the problem lies with how Belle Delphine makes money - which would be a crime in any sane society. She mainstreams low level sex work while preying on the most vulnerable of men - not just thirsty guys, but zombies for their thirst - while at the same time giving thirteen year old girls the idea that the best thing they can do with their lives is becoming cyber prostitutes. If you find that preachy on my part, the problem lies with you. You're defending degeneracy once more. Why could that be?

The industry won't suffer from this and it doesn't put jobs at risk, on the contrary, more money will be freed up for these jobs you speak of - except for the top 1% of footballers, it's the shady player managers and the gambling/doping mafia who will be losing out. Right now 75% of a football club's budget is wasted on wages, this money would be better spend on education of young talent, infrastructure, public safety, etc. ...even charity. It just means more money for more important football related things. And for all I care that Asian money can be used by European states to give a pay rise to nurses, cops and soldiers, people who deserve and need it far more than people leading such privileged lives which consist of four hours of "work" every day. Do you think any football player earning 600.000 euro/month will become better as a player if he earns 800.000/month?

You can very well interfere, interfering is a choice. Supply and demand? To hell with that. That's a terrible logic. There's also a demand for child pornography. No need to supply it. It's a matter of social justice, in the original sense of the term. The majority of people undoubtedly oppose the wages earned by football players. It's because European football is like a capitalist Far West which doesn't even exist in the wildest dreams of American libertarians - it's that extreme - they have wage caps in the U.S., but European football is a completely deregulated market. Anything goes and it's destroying the sport and the fans.

I knew boomer conservatism and social-democracy were neoliberalism in disguise, but now boomer fascism as well?

It's possible Asians and Americans won't be investing ridiculous amounts of money into the Premier League anymore, but that's not a bad thing. Right now the last team in the English ranking stills earn 100 million euro TV-money just for being part of the competition - and the winner of the Championship (English second division) receives as much prize money as the winner of the champions league! This wrecks all healthy forms of competition. Meanwhile my favorite football team, Club Bruges, did a record transfer this summer for 8 million euro - my favorite club never paid more than 4 million euro for a player before. Applying the laws of capitalism to sport can only ruin sport in the long run.

This won't last, all major leagues - and especially the big clubs in Spain, Italy, Germany and France - are fed up with the current situation and seriously consider creating a world league to escape the Premier League's artificial financial dominance - it's only a matter of when, not if. When that happens, then European football will be dead. Our national and international European competitions will be over, as Barcelona and Juventus will be playing against Asian, American and Arab teams on a regular basis - just for the money and to keep up with the English clubs. The fans of the teams in global competitions will only be able to witness games in their home stadium every two weeks, because who will travel to Japan or Argentina to see their team play against a bunch of foreigners we never even heard of every two weeks, who even has the money to do that?

When the time for the Advent of the Antichrist approaches, peoples minds will grow cloudy from carnal passions, and dishonour and lawlessness will grow stronger. Peoples appearances will change, and it will be impossible to distinguish men from women due to there shamelessness in dress and style of hair. These people will be cruel and will be like wild animals because of the temptations of the Antichrist. There will be no respect for parents or elders, love will disappear, and Christian pastors, bishops, and priests will become vain men, completely failing to distinguish the right hand way from the left. At that time the morals and traditions of Christians and the Church will change. People will abandon modesty, and dissipation will reign. Falsehood and greed will attain great proportions, and woe to those who pile up treasures. Lust, adultery, homosexuality, secret deeds and murder will rule in society." - St. Nilus, 430 AD

Posters of US women's soccer star Megan Rapinoe vandalized in Bryant Park

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- An investigation is underway after posters of US women's soccer star Megan Rapinoe were vandalized at Bryant Park in Manhattan, one day after the team's World Cup championship victory.

A commuter noticed anti-gay graffiti on the posters at the park train station at about 7 a.m. Monday.

At least six posters of Rapinoe were vandalized. They have since been cleaned by the MTA.

The NYPD Hate Crime task force is investigating.

The MTA released the following statement:
"Hate has no place in the transit system and we work hard to make the subway a welcoming, safe environment for everyone. We referred this to NYPD which responded to investigate, our maintenance teams got the posters cleaned and we will have them replaced with new ones if necessary."

Rapinoe converted a tiebreaking penalty kick in the second half Sunday as the US won its record fourth Women's World Cup title and second in a row.

Two days past her 34th birthday, Rapinoe became the oldest player to score in a Women's World Cup final, and earned the Golden Boot for the tournament's top scorer and the Golden Ball as the top player.

Rapinoe drew the ire of President Donald Trump by saying she would refuse to visit the White House. Trump called out Rapinoe on Twitter, saying she should never "disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team." He said he would invite the team win or lose.

The team has become a symbol of LGBTQ inclusion, with a lesbian coach and several lesbian players, including Rapinoe.

An Open Letter to Megan Rapinoe, from America

    As told to Joel Engel.

    Source: TheBulwark.com

First, let us congratulate you and your teammates on a sensational World Cup championship. You made us proud.

You know us, right? The country you’ve represented so ably on the pitch? Because—hope this doesn’t sound weird—we’ve kind of had some small role in your success. No question, you worked for what you’ve accomplished with the talents you were fortunate to be blessed with. But never forget you that had the opportunity to do so. That you’ve made the most of those opportunities delights us; it’s what we’re all about. But we do wonder why you’d discount the privilege you enjoyed of having had those opportunities that are, sad to say, deprived to most people around the world.

Correct us if we’re wrong. But our understanding is that most or all of you and your teammates came from middle-class homes (or better) and were allowed and encouraged to take up organized sports at early ages. All (or most) of you went to college and I’d be surprised if any of you paid full-tuition.

This is . . . not the norm around the world. It should be! But this is a form of privilege that’s been granted to you by dint of your birth and we kind of thought that you’d (1) be grateful for it, and (2) would recognize it for what it is and be humble about how many of the women you competed against in France did not have the same advantages.

Because let’s be honest: If you’re a female soccer player, being born in America is like winning the lottery. The U.S. women’s teams have now won four World Cup titles, four Olympic gold medals, and eight CONCACAF gold cups—that’s the kind of domination that no national team in any country in any sport, male or female, has ever achieved. Something must be going right with America and our support of women’s athletics. USA! USA!

So we were kind of confused the other day when you explained your refusal to sing the National Anthem. We’re not quite sure what upsets you. “I think for detractors,” you said, “I would have them look hard into what I’m saying and the actions that I’m doing. Maybe you don’t agree with every single way that I do it, and that can be discussed.”

Well, back atcha. Aren’t we entitled to the same benefit of the doubt?

Let’s discuss whether there’s a country that has made more progress on virtually every human rights front in little more than a generation? In fact, let’s discuss how some countries are actually going backwards. Surely you’ve noticed that France and Germany and the UK and much of the rest of the world are trying to criminalize the kind of speech rights you’re now famous for exercising.

“I know that I’m not perfect,” you said, “but I think that I stand for honesty and for truth and for wanting to have the conversation and for looking at the country honestly. I think this country was founded on a lot of great ideals, but it was also founded on slavery. And I think we just need to be really honest about that and be really open in talking about that so we can reconcile that and hopefully move forward and make this country better for everyone.”

What we hear you saying is, we should look past your imperfections and focus on your intentions. Okay, well, again, back atcha. Right there in the preamble to our Constitution it says, “in order to form a more perfect union…”

You see? “More perfect” expressly states that we’re a work in progress. And aren’t we all! And we have this Constitution—the oldest in the world—that allows for every generation to amend what was originally set down and try to make “this country better for everyone.”

There’ve been 17 Amendments added to the original 10. True, not all of them have made things better. The 16th, 17th, and 18th were giant mistakes that backfired spectacularly (though fortunately the 18th was repealed). But all were passed with the intention of making things better: for example, the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, and limiting presidents to two terms.

So if we’re going to “be really honest” about slavery and “hopefully move forward,” you might acknowledge that chattel slavery ended more than 150 years ago. It was a legacy of our colonial master, England, which at the time practiced slavery in every one of its colonies and territories, and had for over a century, before the American Revolution was a glint in the Founding Fathers’ eyes.

Read the accounts of the Constitutional Convention to see how fiercely slavery was debated. Yes, it would’ve been wonderful if the antislavery voices had prevailed. But keep in mind that if slavery had been disallowed from the beginning, about half of the original 13 colonies wouldn’t have joined the “united” states. Then what? Then no United States. The fact that it was a primary topic of discussion and argumentation at a time when slavery existed on every populated continent and had since the beginning of time was a moral victory without precedent in history.
"After the year 1900 people will become unrecognisable. When the time for the Advent of the Antichrist approaches, peoples minds will grow cloudy from carnal passions, and dishonour and lawlessness will grow stronger. Peoples appearances will change, and it will be impossible to distinguish men from women due to there shamelessness in dress and style of hair.
