Even People In Happy Marriages Cheat, According to Survey

It turns out, even people in happy marriages cheat.

Ashley Madison, a dating service that caters to individuals looking to have a little fun outside of their monogamous relationships, has some data around cheating that might surprise you.

While many people might think most men or women cheat on their spouses because they no longer love their partners, according to Ashley Madison, nothing could be further from the truth. Cupid's arrow still pierces the heart of those committing adultery, with a whopping 61 percent of the nearly 2,800 surveyed saying they still love their wife or husband, but that their physical desires were not being catered to.

“Many of our members tell us that they love their partners and the lives they have built together, but in many cases the intimacy has vanished completely in the marriage,” Isabella Mise, director of communications for Ashley Madison, said in a press release. “Rather than abandon a relationship they’ve invested so much in, they see value in outsourcing some of their physical needs instead.”

Also, according to the survey, a second myth that needs to be busted is the time-honored axiom of “once a cheater, always a cheater.” Two-thirds, or 67 percent, of cheaters surveyed by Ashley Madison didn’t want to keep cheating, but felt they needed to until they could fulfill the needs that led them to stepping out in the first place.

Another 65 percent of cheaters surveyed by the website also believed that cheating and the reasons for straying from a committed relationship isn’t being discussed openly enough.

Further, the notion that men are much more likely to cheat than women is another myth uncovered by Ashley Madison in a 2018 survey. There are actually 1.11 active women for every 1 man, meaning that there are approximately 10 percent more women than men consistently using the infidelity website.

Dr. Tammy Nelson, sex and relationship therapist and author of two books on marital infidelity, told Ashley Madison, “Women are successfully navigating their own affairs and their extramarital activity, as a perk of their emboldened desires, their empowered relationship with their own sexuality ... this has leveled the playing field that has traditionally belonged to men.”

It makes sense to be a bit skeptical of the data, with Ashley Madison being a matchmaker for those looking to hit the sheets outside of their marriage vows. However, it helps to understand some of the reasons we might have about those looking for love outside of their marriages.

Neither do my husband and I. But I can understand why more and more couples cheat these days, even when there aren't any big problems in the marriage. It's because adultery is being promoted by the mainstream media. You find it everywhere, in movies, TV shows, music videos, everywhere in the entertainment history. Think about the plot of some romantic movie, nowadays it involves more and more "forbidden" love between married people and the like. It's disgusting. Not to mention all these divorcees who encourage their married friends and acquaintances to go on some "escapade."

I see no need in cheating, if you are not being satisfied then talk to your spouse.

I have been married and divorced and now married again and I never cheated even when in a non-married relationship. If things are that bad that you feel you have to cheat, then you should not be in that relationship.
Life is like a fire hydrant- sometimes you help people put out their fires, but most of the time you just get peed on by every dog in the neighborhood.
