Sounds like he a sense of proportion and wasn't shy from controversy. He would have made a model exemplary citizen if these traits had been appreciated more by his teachers.

I have a book which describes this Croatian Handschar division as being "the worst combat unit in the Waffen SS"
I'm not as well read on the SS as you are but I've heard that most of the Eastern European units were horribly inept and the Balkan ones were even worse. This is supposedly a quote from the German head of the Albanian SS division:

Schmidhuber observed that, "[w]ith a light mortar you can basically chase him [the Albanian] around the world. During the attack he goes only as far as he finds something to steal or sack. For him, the war is over when he captures a goat, a ploughshare or the wheel of a sewing machine."
Out of curiosity, I decided to look up the history of the Spanish SS division and apparently they did better, man for man, than the Eastern Europeans. There was even a battle called Krasny Bor in which Soviet troops outnumbered them 7 to 1 and were completely rebuffed.

    My own opinions about Hitler:

    1. I find it impressive that he managed to rise from a middle class background (and a brief stint as a struggling artist) to become the leader of Germany.

    2. I think his ability to end the Weimar era's decadence & defeat the German communists was extremely remarkable. He restored a sense of dignity to a nation that had been trapped in a state of chaos for 15 years.

    3. I have always viewed his grand political strategy as naïve and ill informed. Namely because:

    - He obviously understood nothing about US culture or America's history of waging unnecessary wars. He therefore underestimated his American rivals.

    - Hitler largely ignored the Chinese government's overtures of friendship and thereby deprived his nation of a source of raw materials & simple industrial components from 1937 onwards (which is what Germany needed & China was capable of producing) and instead he chose to ally with the Japanese.

Chinese Finance Minister and Ambassador H.H. Kung warned the German government that the Japanese would never reciprocate their alliance. The Germans only learned the truth of this in 1941 when the Japanese refused to declare war on the Soviet Union after Germany had declared war on America.

The Japs had been unable to defeat the Russians at Kalkhyn Gol in 1939 and were probably unnerved by this.

Still, conditions would have been been vastly different in 1941 with the Russians occupied on two fronts. Turning their attention to America instead proved suicidal, both for themselves and Gemany!

There's a discussion about Kalkhyn Gol in this thread.

Allying with the Japanese was one of the worst mistake that Hitler made.

You need to put their focus on America in context. Namely that Pearl Harbor was in response to the embargoes that Roosevelt had put in to place. So they would have been damned, no matter if they responded to Roosevelt economic warfare or not.
The sense of honor is of so fine and delicate a nature that
it is only to be met with in minds which are naturally noble or
cultivated by good examples and a refined education.

Roosevelt was goading for a fight, his idea was that it would distract from his failed economic policies and there is a very good chance he was at least a crypto communist. Both Japan and Germany did not understand the industrial capabilities of America at the time.
Life is like a fire hydrant- sometimes you help people put out their fires, but most of the time you just get peed on by every dog in the neighborhood.

Yes, I accept that I simplified for the sake of brevity.

There is also the Sino-Japanese war to consider, which had been ongoing since 1937.
