I don't see it as a "dead end" but, instead, we have not yet hit bottom.

The more that you think we've hit rock bottom the more they surprise you.

The real trouble is perhaps not that great things are not produced any longer -- because they are! -- but with the current climate, where everyone's voice is heard (even if that voice is that of a retard), there is so much clutter that it's harder than ever before to find the real cultural gems out there.

Again, there are amazing things created if you look for it, especially outside the larger industry. It seems the world is simply too big for it not to contain great things as well as the boring waste of time we see in mainstream culture. (And to be frank, if we're expecting great things from movie blockbusters or pop music, we only have our own lazy bums to blame.)

But I do sympathize with anyone finding it frustrating to focus on the greats while simultaneously having mainstream media's repetitive excrement flung in our faces whenever they get the chance.

Skärmträl, if you can point me towards these 'amazing things' I'll be more than happy to listen to them

One thing you haven't considered though is that news travels fast in this modern era of communication and anything of particularly outstanding quality would have almost certainly made itself known to us by now.

In music? Off the top of my head: Paul Moravec's Tempest Fantasy, Björk's Vulnicura, Caroline Shaw's Partita for 8 Voices.

(It's what I've been listening to as of late anyway, and they're all post-2000 works, and they're amazing.)

    Who are 'us', though?

I was hoping for a more substantial answer.

("And I was hoping for more substantial music", got you covered. )

Sorry, mate. It just gave me earache but I accept that music is very subjective.

I'm sure that this stuff represents nothing special for 99.99% of the population but if it sounds 'amazing' to you then fine

Sometimes, things that are overly complex are actually no better than the cheap, manufactured dross from the corporate pop industry, despite all the extra work that has gone into them. I accept that those I've just listened to are infinitely more talented musicians but they somehow don't produce a superior end product

In fact, it sounds like a load of pretentious cr*p to me but I could just be a cultural philistine
