Nationalist victory a punishment for "arrogance and stupidity" of NL's leaders, FVD leader says

FvD leader Thierry Baudet believes that his party's victory in the Provincial States election is punishment for the "arrogance and stupidity" of the Netherlands' current leaders. In his victory speech he emphasized that FvD is now one of the largest parties in the country, and that a change has been set in motion. "Economic and political capitulation is coming to an end", he said, NOS reports.

"We have been called to the front because our country needs us", Baudet said. He spoke of sustainability idolatry and climate witchcraft, and strongly criticized various aspects of Prime Minister Mark Rutte's policy, which he called economic nonsense. Baudet also said that he won't be "closing little deals in back rooms with Rutte", and called for new parliamentary elections.

The right-wing party is the big winner of the Provincial States election on Wednesday. According to ANP's current prognosis, the FvD will get 12 seats in the Eerste Kamer, from their current zero seats. The winners of Wednesday's election will not only take their places in government at the provincial level, they will also select the composition of the Eerste Kamer, the Dutch Senate. That will take place in May, with new members taking office on June 11. The outgoing members will conduct their final scheduled official business on June 4.

VVD Prime Minister Mark Rutte said that the Netherlands will remain well manageable, even though his coalition is losing its majority in the Eerste Kamer. "That means drinking a lot of coffee to work on getting us a majority in the Senate", he said, according to NOS. He did not want to express a preference for cooperation with a specific party. Rutte emphasized that the VVD is still the largest party in the Netherlands, and according to him, the only real people's party that connects people. According to ANP's prognosis, the VVD will get 12 seats in the Senate, the same as FvD.

GroenLinks was the other big winner in this election. Party leader Jesse Klaver spoke of a great result in what he calls the "climate elections". He said that he will keep Rutte to he promises he made about the climate. Klaver added that the cabinet now has to choose between cooperation with GroenLinks of FvD. He sees no possibility of GroenLinks and FvD working together.

PVV leader Geert Wilders is satisfied with the result. His party will end up with six seats in the Senate, according to ANP's prognosis. "Now that a new party with a sound similar to ours has gone to 10 seats at once, our loss is limited", he said. He complimented Baudet on his campaign, and emphasized that the "unique PVV sound" will continue to sound in the Senate. "And six seats is not nothing."

D66 leader Rob Jetten acknowledged that his party was put back a step, but stressed that the election result is better than it seemed a few month ago. He pointed out that the political landscape has become even more fragmented.

CDA leader Sybrand Buma also referred to the fragmentation of the political landscape. According to him, his party beat the polls again.

Gert-Jan Segers of ChristenUnie, the only coalition party that did not lose Senate seats in this election, said that his party's attitude has paid off. According to him, his party managed to both take responsibility and not abandon its ideals. The Christian party leader called on other parties to cooperate with the government, now that the coalition lost its Senate majority.

According to PvdA leader Lodewijk Asscher, his party may be losing a seat in the Senate, but won in gained confidence. He emphasized that the PvdA performed better than it did in the parliamentary- and city councils elections. He also said that his party would support good plans and vote against bad ones.

SP leader Lilian Marijnissen acknowledged that this was not "the SP's elections". She expected that it would be difficult, and emphasized that the previous Provincial States election four years ago produced the second best result in the history of her party. According to Marijnissen, there is no clear explanation for the loss. She also mentioned the fragmentation of the political landscape, and the rise of what she calls "protest parties.

Animal party PvdD leader Marianne Thieme is pleased that her party seems to have come out of the "political battlefield" with an extra seat in the Senate. According to her, the animal party continues to grow steadily. Other parties can no longer ignore her and she is open to consultation, she said.

50Plus leader Henk Krol is "over the moon" with the results. He doesn't mind that his party is not making huge progress, steady growth is better, he said, according to NOS.

SGP leader Kees van der Staaij thinks that the Senate will again become an "exciting story", with Prime Minister Rutte again having to cooperate with other parties. He said that the SGP will continue to support good plans.

Selēuk Öztürk of DENK stressed that his party is now entering the Senate for the first time. According to him, DENK can give opposition against parties like FvD and PVV and their xenophobic ideas.

Dutch populist vote surge costs PM Rutte senate majority

Thierry Baudet is a critic of the EU and of the Netherlands' immigration policies

The governing centre-right coalition in the Netherlands has lost its senate majority after a populist party surged in provincial elections.

The anti-immigration Forum for Democracy is set to win most votes and have as many seats in the upper house as Prime Minister Mark Rutte's party.

The election came two days after a terror attack in Utrecht.

Addressing supporters, party leader Thierry Baudet bitterly criticised Mr Rutte's immigration policies.

"Successive Rutte governments have left our borders wide open, letting in hundreds of thousands of people with cultures completely different to ours," Thierry Baudet told the cheering crowd.

Mr Baudet, who was criticised for continuing to campaign after Monday's shooting on a tram, said Dutch people were being "destroyed by the people who are supposed to be protecting us".

Analysts say he may team up with the anti-Islam Freedom Party, led by far-right politician Geert Wilders. Mr Wilders has seen his party's seats decline from nine to five.

With about 94% of the vote counted, Forum for Democracy is believed to have won the most votes. Forum for Democracy had no seats in the current 75-seat upper house. It is now set to have 12.

Mr Rutte will now need the support of other parties beyond his own coalition to pass legislation. The 38 seats previously held by his coalition will now fall to 31.
    Who is Thierry Baudet?

When I first met Thierry Baudet in 2014 he leapt into the passenger seat of my car and pontificated on the state of Dutch politics and why the Netherlands would be better off outside the EU.

Five years on, this self-proclaimed intellectual is considered one of the most influential politicians in the country. Mr Baudet, 36, is known for bizarre headline-grabbing stunts such as taking part in a parliamentary debate wearing a dysfunctional military vest, to highlight underfunding of the armed forces.

His parliamentary office boasts an imposing Italian designer fridge and a baby grand piano, while the walls exhibit paintings of some of his political heroes. The last time we met he tinkled the ivories and earnestly extrapolated on his view that women were less ambitious than men.

He explained the "evidence'" that women prefer to read magazines about hair and make-up and have babies than concentrate on pursuing a career - and then sent me a photo of a book entitled Taking Sex Differences Seriously.

Buoyed by election success, this ambitious politician who sees himself as a champion of white culture is just getting started.

The Dutch prime minister told his supporters they were "going to have to get to work". "We have to talk with other parties so we can continue to lead this country well," he said.

While most politicians halted their campaigns in the immediate aftermath of Monday's attack on a tram in Utrecht, Mr Baudet continued it and blamed the attack in Utrecht on the government's immigration policies. Three people were killed and three others seriously wounded and the chief suspect, Turkish born Gokmen Tanis, remains in custody.

On Wednesday, prosecutors said a letter found in the gunman's getaway car was among the reasons why a terrorist motive was being considered. No connection has so far been found between Mr Tanis and the victims of the attack.

Well it seems the left in the Netherlands are responding to this in much the same way as the left did in the USA after 2016. With at least one university teacher asking where Volkert is :

it is only to be met with in minds which are naturally noble or
cultivated by good examples and a refined education.

    Dutch populist wins provincial elections

Provincial votes determine the composition in the Senate, where Rutte's government has lost its majority. The big winner in the vote was the Forum for Democracy party, led by 36-year-old Thierry Baudet, which holds just two seats in parliament after entering politics in 2016.

On current projections, it will have an equal number of seats in the Senate as Rutte's VVD.

In a speech to supporters peppered with literary allusions, Baudet said the arrogance of the elites had been punished. "We are standing in the rubble of what was once the most beautiful civilization in the world," he said.

Following the lead of US President Donald Trump, Baudet opposes immigration and emphasises "Dutch first" cultural and economic themes. He opposes the euro and thinks the Netherlands should leave the European Union.

Baudet had continued campaigning when other parties stopped after Monday's attack in Utrecht, in which a gunman shot three people dead on a tram. The populist leader blamed the incident on the government's lax immigration policies.

The Dutch economy has been one of Europe's best performers under successive Rutte-led governments, but resentment over early 2010s austerity programmes lingers. Recent debate has focused on funding the government's plans to meet international goals on climate change.

    Going green

Left-leaning voters feel not enough is being done and supported the pro-environment Green Left party, which also booked big gains nationwide on Wednesday, including taking nearly a quarter of the vote in Amsterdam.

Rutte is expected to look to the Green Left or Labour parties for outside support once the new Senate is seated in May, though there are other possibilities in the increasingly fragmented political landscape, which include religious parties and a party focused on voters older than 50.

Rutte said he would be looking for support from "constructive" parties on either the left or the right. Baudet ruled out any cooperation.

    Some quotes from his speech,

"...Like all the other countries of our boreal world, we are being destroyed by the people who should protect us. We are being undermined by our universities, our journalists. By the people who receive our art grants and who design our buildings. And we are especially undermined by our directors..."

"...We have been called to the front. Because it has to, because our country needs us..."

"...We have survived several ice ages, we have floored mammoths, we are carriers, we are heirs of the greatest civilization that has ever existed..."

At last we finally hear some good news coming out of the Netherlands again.

VICTORY SPEECH THIERRY BAUDET Netherlands Election 3/21/19

The owl of Minerva spreads its wings at the fall of the evening. And not only this evening, dear friends, dear campaign members, dear party members, dear comrades. Only now, in these late hours of the day, are the first results coming in, and now we know where we stand and what happened today.

The owl of Minerva only now spreads its wings, because it is often only at the last moment that we realize what we have and what we should have cherished, when it is almost too late.

So we stand here tonight, at the eleventh hour, quite literally. We stand among the rubble of what was once the greatest and most beautiful civilization the world has ever known, a civilization that reached to the far corners of the Earth, filled with self-confidence. This civilization produced the most beautiful architecture, the greatest music, and the best art that has ever existed under the stars. Our nation is part of that great civilization.

But like all the other Boreal nations, we are being destroyed by the very people who have been appointed to protect us. We are being undermined by our own universities, our journalists, by those who receive cultural subsidies to produce our art, and even by those who design our buildings. And above all, we are being undermined by our rulers. This is a clique – a small clique of self-important professional bureaucrats, people who have never read a book in their lives and have no clue how to deal with long term-issues – that rules us. Unfortunately, they control our country’s decision-making process, and through a curious mix of cynicism, lack of ability, and self-interest, they manage to make the wrong decision every time. Not for much longer!

Well in short the PVV is quite on the left side of the political spectrum besides their standings about multiculturalism, immigration, islam and leaving the EU. While FvD is more a right winged party on most subjects.

26 seats for FvD in the latest poll ... a poll for the parliamentarian elections, I suppose.
