    Post Re: On Aging

    Here are some wise words from the Christian humanist Desiderius Erasmus that should shed some light on this topic.

    "Death is not to be feared, nor should we wail when it comes to others, unless it was a foul death. The happiest man is not the one who has lived the longest, but the one who has made the most of his life. The span of life should be measured not by years but by our deeds well performed. Length of life has no bearing on a man's happiness. It is how well he lived that counts."
    --Desiderius Erasmus The Education of a Christian Prince

    I have often thought about the full realization of growing old and the shock of nothingness when I 'die'.......but it spurs me on to ENJOY life to the fullest.

    Post Re: On Aging

    If I had the choice I'd go straight back to the womb.

    Apart from that: "Things they do look awful cold. I hope they die before I get old!"
    And all my youth passed by sad-hearted,
    the joy of Spring was never mine;
    Autumn blows through me dread of parting,
    and my heart dreams and longs to die.

    - Nikolaus Lenau (1802-1850)

    Real misanthropes are not found in solitude, but in the world; since it is experience of life, and not philosophy, which produces real hatred of mankind.

    Post Re: On Aging

    The Aryo-Indian word 'Maya' [cf., 'magic'] refers to the illusory quality of phenomena; it is a recognition that 'untruth' is the nature of existence.

    Those that mistake this Maya for 'truth' are deluded.

    Life, aging and death are merely parts of Maya.

    There is a 'truth' - called 'Brahman' - but it is not found in this illusory existence;

    "Life is like the lightning flash.
    It is fleeting and transitory.
    It fades quickly like the rainbow,
    Like the impression on water!
    It is like a bubble or dream,
    Shadow, mist or mirage:
    And yet man thinks that life is permanent here.
    This is Maya's delusion, mind's jugglery
    It is a deception of the senses.
    Wake up, O Man! from this long slumber!
    Understand Maya's tricks and learn to discriminate
    Attain knowledge of the Infinite,
    And enjoy Immortal Bliss of Brahman".
    [Swami Sivananda]

    Does this out-look help us face death?
    Why are there beings at all, & why not rather nothing?

    When I was younger, I was sure there was only nothingness.....but now I know for sure I do not know. There may be something. For some reason, for this person who is so rational and scientific, as time has imprinted different experiences on me, I find a spirituality creep in that sometimes is very scary. Not a deep religious feeling as I have never been a religious man....just a feeling of kinship...perhaps of those that came before me....a sense of signs before me that are placed for guidance but because of our culture I am far from able to interpret. Yes, perhaps I am getting closer to my end and this is just the beginning of a phase that will insulate me from the inevitable....but yet I do know now that no one really knows.

    Post Re: On Aging

    Right now, I am a little worried about growing old. I am still in my teenage years but days and weeks and even months go by so fast that it kind of scares me. Is this what life is like? I sure hope not. Because right now I feel that it's going way to fast.
    Just close your eyes...can you remember
    The generations not so long ago
    I feel the shameless urge that we must restore
    Our former king to his rightful throne
    And with me lords and maidens
    We wait for the chosen son's return

    I come alive
    It's a time for celebration
    Our will to restore
    Make our past become the futre once more

    Still he lives! 2000 years have passed
    And still we're yearning for his return
    We fulfill a wishful prohecy
    And so the chanting begins
    Hail Caesar...Hail Caesar...we render unto you
    What is still yours

    You need a reality check, Phlegethon

    Years are advancing;
    hands are trembling;
    teeth are shaking;
    hairs are growing grey;
    intellect is waning;
    memory is failing;
    diseases are trampling;
    senses are becoming cold;
    limbs are not moving;
    feet are tottering;
    face is losing lustre;
    eyes are sinking;
    eye-sight is getting dim;
    relatives are in hot-haste arriving;
    they are crying "It is all up!"
    This when dreadful death comes,
    who will help you ...?

    Yeah I am only 18 and I feel that way too!

    I will die in battle rather than to die old and withered in my bed. It is the viking way.
