MyHeritage and Other DNA Testing: Which is the Best?

I was planning for years to take a DNA test, but I am thinking which one to choose... I can't afford a very expensive one at the moment...

I keep seeing a commercial for MyHeritage on youtube, so this time I clicked on it and went to their website... It seems they have sales for 2 more days...

But is it worth taking the DNA test there? Is there any cheaper and better option?

What do you guys think? Especially those of you who have more experience and knowledge about such things...

It seems they don't offer very specific countries for ethnicity, for example... As far as it seems from their website they put Scandinavian as one single ethnicity, for example, which I think it's too general... Is it possible to use the results from there on other websites to have more details?

What do you think? What do you know?

    Thank you in advance!

If you wait long enough they (23andMe, AncestryDNA, FtDNa, etc..) will all have sales at some point this year. They all come up with the same results but how they interpret it differs. My results differed on Ancestry & 23andMe though both point to northwestern Europe as the overwhelming source of my DNA. Does MyHeritage include Y Haplogroup & MtDNA? I know AncestryDNA doesn't. Btw, the sale price does not include shipping (via the USPS in the US) which is extra. $9.95 for standard mail with 23andMe, I think it was the same with 23andMe.

Well, I'm not sure about that... I didn't find such information on their website...

Yes, that shipping price... I'd prefer something from Europe though... Shipping from and to USA is more expensive.

However, I'm not satisfied with their ethnicity estimates, I find them too general... They put Germany and France in the same pot, also all the Eastern European countries...

23andMe, AncestryDNA, and Family Tree DNA seem to be the most reliable, and their estimates seems good too. I've done 23andMe, and that was the most accurate for me personally. And they have sales on often.

I had mine done with 23 and me for both Ancestry and Health.
Its probably the same with all of them, they are good at getting your raw data, but you then have to go elsewhere to get full results.
As an example, 23 and me only reported on 9 health issues, only one of which I had. Turns out the FDA had at one stage completely stopped them but now allows then just 9.
So I discovered there is a complete DNA database who will analise your RAW Data for just a few dollars, its very easy to do, I got back a report on 300 + health issues.
Like wise with ancestry, I was informed I had 30% Eastern European, but 0% DNA of all the listed East European countries. I suggested to them the reason might be that they don't even acknowledge the existence of the country of Prussia, as you get a drop down menu to chose from, you cannot even enter that that is where your ancestors came from, hence the reason they will never be able to assign Prussian Genes.
So I sent my raw data to LM Genetics where they were able to give me a much more detailed description of my ancestry, actually assigning much of my DNA to Prussia.
Another free one to send your Raw data to is Gedmatch.

    It all comes to this:
Would you post your intimate details all over the internet?
No? Why the hell would you give your most personal information to someone, and pay for it too?

    Couldn't agree more!

I can get 90% of my ancestry just by looking in the mirror (..and I'm not too fussed about the rest).

Vlfr, I'm a little concerned about 23andMe because she's the owner.

    And this is her sister

My mother's hobby is genealogy. We know names, how many children, where they have lived, what they have done for livings, how old they lived etc.

Honestly without all that knowledges (and just DNA/genetics) ... who knows ... I probable would not be as race aware person as I'm.

From my mother's side (in Finland) we have gotten as far as needed (17th) century as my ancestors arrived from Sweden (Stockholm area). In Finland one can get pretty easily to year 1650 - 1680 via Churches records. But further than that .... it becomes much more challenger (if your ancestors have not been criminals or noble people). In Sweden about 100 years more far in history.

    I'm aware of my ancestors .... last 15 - 19 generations ... that's enough for me.

Hahaha!!! Paying Jews to tell you about your ancestry ... what could possibly go wrong?

I think I'd rather just pull countries out of a hat!
