I was shocked last time I went to an "organic" farmers market close to where I live. A local farmer had big red apples and I asked if the apples were from the region. I was answered that "these" come from Turkey... Apples from Turkey... We don't have enough apples in Europe. Just imagine the energy released to bring these "organic" apples to Switzerland. Complete nonsense.

Once I also asked a cheese maker who had plenty of different small cheeses if he made all of them. He told me that "these" were industrial... In fact, he removed the cheese from the original packaging to put them in a more handmade looking one on his display...

At least they were "honest" when asked for.

Of course this can happen and I would guess more likely in huge markets in big cities. In smaller areas people are more likely to know other people and it's just not likely to have this slip under the radar.

Genuine farmers need to band together and complain to the organizers. Then there are organizers who just want money from sellers and don't care.

I didn't watch the whole thing but I'm glad the show took the viewpoint from genuine small farmers instead of just painting everyone as potential swindlers.

I don't trust the word "organic" at all. This is why I grow some of my food in my garden for years, free of pesticides, weed killers and chemical fertilizers. Some is grown in large containers and some in the soil. The main ingredient in the soil and potting mixes is made with compost. I believe that the Amish farmers still are the only ones that can be trusted. When I see very large strawberries in the supermarket labeled "organic", I'm rolling my eyes. They sure don't taste like mine..............

I think the term "organic" is a legally defined term based on various governments' guidelines. I guess one would have to go read all the legal writing about this (likely long and boring). I think the image people get from the word may not always be what the reality is.

It seems that giant strawberries have a lot of genetic altering going on to make them huge. It's a kind of "projecting an image" to consumers who get impressed with big strawberries (I wonder if they spray them with a colourant too LOL). I don't get strawberries much but it seems these huge ones can taste rather watered-down. They look suspicious to me.

I imagine there can be genetically altered strawberries which are grown under the legal "organic" term.

I imagine your own home grown ones are better than these giant mutoid ones!

You are right, "genetically altered" food is another problem all together.
Has the nutrition value been diminished? Why are so many cancers around these days?
Sorry, I'm a skeptical old man.........I still believe in the old saying "We are what we eat".
I stay away from Hydroponic grown food, I don't worry about the water but all chemicals that are added to the water.

In the US you need to find a company who is "Certified" Organic. I worked for one of these farms before. They have to follow rules about what can and can't be used. I don't think it usually is an issue, because farmers who bother with the certification aren't likely to be taking shortcuts with their products. There are yearly inspections and audits that are performed in order to retain the certification.

Nothing is what it purports to be anymore.

We live in a world of illusions and deceit
