    Data Base Error Message

I've been receiving a Data Base Error message intermittently while attempting to log-in to the site, and have also been losing my connection while posting.

Also, I'm supposed to be receiving instant email notification, but recently this feature stopped working for me.

I've been getting the data base error message too.

I lose internet connection too but in my case it's because I have an old laptop that suddenly cuts off (shuts off) on me. It's been happening ever since the third prong got stuck in the wall electrical outlet and came off of the plug some time ago. I love my laptop and don't want a new one yet.

I haven't signed up for any email notifications.

The broken ground prong should not cause such a problem.

Also, are you not using a surge protector?

I think it's a site server problem, and not at our end because I have a new tower PC, and Lilly has a new laptop with regularly updated security protection... We also access the Internet with our phones while away from home.

Instant email notification is a convenient feature; when it works that is.

Saw the database error as well, I was thinking that there's maintaineance going on (database mirroring), so there's an overload on the socket and the server shuts down outside connection to the database. But it's happening quite often, sometimes it's back working after short, the other day it was over hours though, so it's maybe not something scheduled or regular. Hmm...

On the other hand, it appears to get solved on its own, so it's maybe a problem with temporary databases which the forum software creates, which gets fixed when the software dumps the old temp DB and creates a new one. It was a widespread problem with the mysql 3 and 4 versions with auto-increment fields, it shouldnt happen with mysql 5, although this version has its own trouble sometimes with overflows, which could be one of many reasons for why the DB server is unavailable.

Surge protector? No, I don't have one. Is that what I need?

edit: I just ordered a surge protector online. About $10.

    I don't understand any of that. I didn't know you were a computer/tech genius. That's impressive.

You should use a surge protector for all 'sensible' electronics, whether it's your mobile, laptop, tv, sound systems, whatever. Overloads can happen so easily, and it destroys all your tech before the main security of your house gets the chance to react.

These are pretty cheap, and also offer ways to shut down electricity consumption from your TV for example, since all modern things go only into stand-by, so when you dont use it, just click the switch on the surge protector and stop the waste.

Oh sorry, that was just my thoughts and maybe a hint for the admins where to look for the problem^^
But yeah, I'm (was) a media-designer for digital and print medias (aka "webdesigner"), also did some programming. I'm out of business for quite some years though, only do minor things for fun and my own use now and even that only rarely.

I just bought a second one online. I opted for wall mount surge protectors. Thanks Gareth and Velvet.

I've encountered it just recently myself, db error that the session table was full. This one script deleted the session table once by hour, but we changed it to every 10-15 mins, which should have solved the issue. But since it's still going on, there might be some other issue. We'll look into it.

P.S. It seemed to coincide with a huge number of guests online at the same time (60,268, 3 Days Ago). That's quite a lot... Maybe we were spidered or it was a DDoS attack...

Okay, so we've managed to figure out what could be causing this. The large number of guests are spiders from a Chinese datacenter (ChinaNetCenter Ltd). Seems they are spidering the content for Chinese search engines/access providers. They are spidering the whole web, not just Skadi. But while the spidering process is underway, this is, of course, heavy on our server/software, since it has to keep 50000+ guest sessions active. So, we typically encounter some db errors and/or temporary downtime while this happens, usually once a day. These guests are also faking to be "Mozilla" users, so that they do not get blocked. Well, they could use a more modest approach, like Google does - sending a few dozen spiders at a time rather than thousands - typically Chinese... Not sure how much longer this is supposed to take, at worst we might have to block their IPs.

Edit: We've blocked some of their IPs, let's see how this affects the load...

I use Ghostery to keep trackers away from my PC.
What is amazing about this site is that there is only one tracker that is appearing. It is "double click" which I'm blocking.

    Good job.
