Shutdown Showdown: As Senators Leave Town, Donald Trump Stays at White House for Christmas

President Donald Trump will remain in Washington, DC, even though the Senate has adjourned until after Christmas.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders confirmed that the president would remain at the White House, while First Lady Melania Trump would return from their Mar-a-Lago resort to spend Christmas together with the family.

The first lady and their son Barron Trump left earlier in the week for the Christmas holiday in Florida.

Parts of the government shut down after Senate Democrats refused to pass funding legislation passed by the House that included $5 billion in funding for border security.
The Senate adjourned until Thursday, as Senators flew home for Christmas.
Trump defended his position, noting that he won an election campaigning for a strong physical barrier on the Southern border.
“The crisis of illegal activity at our Southern Border is real and will not stop until we build a great Steel Barrier or Wall,” he wrote on Twitter. “Let work begin!”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer continued to complain that the shutdown was the result of a “Trump tantrum” despite legislation that funded the government having passed in the Republican-led House.
House Democrats will take the majority in January, led by future Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Rand Paul on Syria: ‘I’m Very Proud of the President — This Is Exactly What He Promised’

Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said he was “very proud,” of President Donald Trump for beginning the process of pulling U.S. troops from Syria.
Paul said, “I’m very proud of the president. This is exactly what he promised. And I think the people agree with him, actually.”
He added, “I think people believe we’ve been at war too long, in too many places and we do need to turn attention to problems we have at home here, roads, bridges, schools. We have a lot of problems in our country, and people are tired of spending —we spent several trillion dollars on these wars everywhere, and the president promised he would be different. It’s one of the reasons he won because he actually attracts independence who aren’t beholden to either party who say why don’t we turn attention back to America?”

I'm happy President Trump is pulling our people out of Syria. We shouldn't be anywhere in the Middle East.

Whether I'm for or against Trump, we have no business in Syria, we were not even invited. We entered illegally. We need to stop policing the world, we don't own it.
The military industrial complex is hungry and tries to find an enemy over and over again.
It is time to reset our priorities.

And just look at the hysterics that ensued when he decided to pull out.
I'm surprised there wasn't another "gas attack".

I am in the Oval Office & just gave out a 115 mile long contract for another large section of the Wall in Texas. We are already building and renovating many miles of Wall, some complete. Democrats must end Shutdown and finish funding. Billions of Dollars, & lives, will be saved!

AMAZING: President Trump, First Lady Carry Out Secret Trip To Iraq To Surprise Troops

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump secretly traveled to Iraq overnight to make a surprise visit to the United States troops.

This trip came as a huge shock to most considering it was Christmas night and no one expected this.

Of course, it was a completely unannounced trip so as not to spoil the surprise for anyone overseas. Imagine waking up for another day of work and the President of the United States and his First Lady are greeting you.

There was rumors that Air Force One was spotted, but it was White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders who made the official announcement.

“President Trump and the First Lady traveled to Iraq late on Christmas night to visit with our troops and Senior Military leadership to thank them for their service, their success, and their sacrifice and to wish them a Merry Christmas,” she wrote.

Within minutes, Sanders already had thousands of likes’ retweets, and comments in support of the presidential visit to Iraq.

    — The Daily Caller (@DailyCaller) December 26, 2018

Trump was recently criticized for not traveling to Iraq sooner, but clearly did a great thing and showed his support for the military.

USA Today detailed the previous criticism, stating:

“Trump’s Christmas journey, cloaked in secrecy, comes as he is weighing a major reduction in forces in the the 17-year-old conflict in Afghanistan and also during a shakeup in the top rungs of military leadership.

Trump was criticized this year for failing to visit with front-line troops earlier in his presidency. President Barack Obama traveled to Iraq shortly after taking office and President George W. Bush visited Baghdad in 2003 months after the Iraq war began.

The timing of the president’s visit appeared designed to soothe bipartisan alarms that followed a series of abrupt decisions upending U.S. foreign policy. Trump announced on Twitter last week that he would withdraw more than 2,000 U.S. troops from Syria and then parted ways with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis days later.

Trump is also considering a significant reduction in forces in Afghanistan, USA TODAY and other outlets reported last week. The moves in Syria and Afghanistan were consistent with promises Trump made during his campaign, but they unsettled some lawmakers because they appeared to be made over the objection of military advisers.”

When the government is shut down, then what else is a president to do? It’s a perfect time to make a surprise trip to visit the troops for Christmas and show support. Democrats already know where Trump stands in negotiations and it doesn’t seem like Trump is willing to move on his demands unless provided with a decent offer from Democrats.

Any negotiations made while Trump is in Iraq can easily be relayed via modern communication technology. Being overseas will not prevent the American president from negotiations if Democrats are willing to present a viable offer that includes a desirable amount of funding for Trump’s border wall.

Democrat Chuck Schumer stands in Trump’s way.

He has plenty of time to think about his next move as the Trump’s spend time with the American military.

The Latest: Trump greets US troops in Germany

    Excerpt:
President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, have greeted U.S. troops in Germany. It was the president’s second visit to U.S. troops abroad in the last day. He stopped at Ramstein Air Force Base on his way back from Iraq.
Trump slowly made his way down a rope line at the Ramstein base, shaking hands, chatting and posing for photos. Some service members held up “Make America Great Again” caps for Trump to sign.
The president’s earlier visit to a base in western Iraq was his first to U.S. forces in harm’s way overseas. Both visits were unannounced.
