Outcry in Germany Over Homage to Rommel

A senior official at Germany’s defence ministry has sparked an uproar with a tweet commemorating the death of Erwin Rommel, a favourite general of Adolf Hitler who was later involved in a plot to kill the Führer. The tweet unleashed an outcry on social media, with some condemning the conservative politician for rehabilitating the National Socialist general while others defended Tauber saying Rommel’s record was mixed. Dubbed the “Desert Fox” for his tactical successes in the North Africa campaign, Rommel had been contacted in February 1944 by a group of officers plotting to kill Hitler. But he was seriously wounded when a British plane strafed his car on July 17th, and that ensured he did not participate directly in an attempt made on Hitler’s life three days later. Gestapo investigators nonetheless discovered his role but Hitler knew he could not execute the popular officer. Instead, Rommel was ordered to commit suicide, which he did on October 14th before being buried following a national funeral. Malte Mahlberg, who identified himself on Twitter as a Social Democrat student, wrote: “Rommel was a Nazi and killed people. Someone like him deserves neither a commemoration day nor a mention in a tweet by a politician of a democratic country.” Reacting with incredulity at Tauber’s tweet, Petra Pau of the Left Party wrote: “Rommel participated in war crimes (to put it mildly), like so many others.” #Bundeswehr — Petra Pau (@PetraPauMaHe) October 15, 2018 Other Twitter users, however, leapt to the defence of Tauber, with Twitter user Justin Laun writing that the “barracks where I am stationed is still called Rommel Barracks”. Defending his tweet, Tauber himself told Bild that Rommel had “repeatedly disregarded criminal orders” and was linked to the resistance against Hitler. A debate about Rommel is important, “if we expect soldiers today to be responsible for the values of our country.” For Pau, however, Tauber’s line stood in opposition to Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen’s vow in 2017 for the armed forces to make a clean break with the Wehrmacht of the Third Reich. She then ordered a review of the army’s 1982 “decree on traditions” that allowed displaying Wehrmacht items within their “historical co
ntext”, and said new names would have to be found for barracks still named after World War II figures, including Rommel.

The story of how Erwin Rommel, the German general, saved a captured British soldier and then served him beer and cigarettes has emerged after 70 years. Captain Roy Wooldridge, who was in the Royal Engineers, was taken prisoner during a covert night-time mission to examine submerged mines along the French beaches weeks before the D-Day landings. He was not wearing his Army uniform, nor carrying identification, due to the intense secrecy surrounding D-Day. He was treated as a spy and ought to have been shot. But Field Marshall Rommel, in charge of Germany's Atlantic Wall defences and highly respected by the British, requested he personally question the new prisoner at a chateau in Brittany.

Capt Wooldridge, a hero of the Battle of El Alamein two years earlier at which Rommel was defeated by the Allies, was stunned when he was presented to the high-ranking officer. Rommel, known as the Desert Fox, asked the Briton if there was anything he needed, to which Capt Wooldridge cheekily replied "a good meal, a pint of beer and a packet of cigarettes". To his astonishment, his wish was granted when he was ushered into Rommel's mess where all three items were waiting for him. Capt Wooldridge ate the food, drank the stein of lager and smoked the German cigarettes, but kept the empty packet as a souvenir. Thanks to Rommel, he survived and was sent on to a prisoner of war camp.

Capt Wooldridge said: "We were taken to a house and interrogated for two weeks - they wanted to know what we had been doing but I didn't say anything. After that I was taken to a chateaux and in the guard room I was given a cup of tea and some cake. I was told to have a wash and smarten up because I was going to see someone very important. I was marched into a room and there stood behind a desk was Rommel. I recognised him immediately because I had studied photographs of him while in the Western Desert. His boss, Field Marshall von Rundstedt was also there - two of the most powerful men in the German army. Rommel asked me what I was doing in France but I didn't say anything. He then asked me if there was anything I required. I just said I could do with a pint of beer, a packet of cigarettes and a good meal. Then I was dismissed. I was taken to his mess and served by his waiter and on the table was a stein of beer, cigarettes and a plate of food. I could't understand it.

I was told that Rommel always wanted to meet men who had been doing something unusual when they were captured. I was meant to have been shot. I was told on several occasions during my interrogation that is what would happen unless I talked. Hitler had issued orders that commandos were to be shot but Rommel declined to obey that instruction. Rommel saved my life. He was a very fine German and a clean fighter."

Capt Wooldridge was taken to a PoW camp in northern Germany where he remained for the rest of the war. He returned to Britain where he become the principal of Derby College of Art and Technology.

Rommel, Germany's Greatest WW2 General, Didn't Commit Suicide - Yet Another Big Lie from Allied Propaganda

    https://russia-insider.com/en/rommel...ied-propaganda

..................Rommel was given a choice between committing suicide, in return for assurances that his reputation would remain intact and that his family would not be persecuted following his death, or facing a trial that would result in his disgrace and execution; he chose the former and committed suicide using a cyanide pill. Rommel was given a state funeral, and it was announced that “he had succumbed to his injuries from the strafing of his staff car in Normandy.” This last hyphenated account is the only correct account......................

    Story on line............

That Russian source you linked to is an interesting read, schwab, but it's mainly propaganda.

David Irving describes the exact circumstances of Rommel's death in his book 'Trail of the Fox' and there's no doubt he was pressured into committing suicide.

I don't believe he committed suicide, he was not a coward. The same could be said about Hess in the Spandau prison where I was a temporary guard in the early sixties. These were proud Germans.
By the way do you believe everything that is said on "Prison Planet" ?

I had read an account about Rommel but the idea that he didn't commit suicide is new to me. I'll have to look into this more.

When did David Irving say this? Before jail or after jail? I think he's altered his tune a little post jail which makes me wonder a bit.

    --------------

The problem with all of this is that we just are going by what information we judge to be correct but this whole thing is just so full of propaganda, control and deliberate smear campaign. It's really hard to know what is accurate. I mean I can't go into some records and get any of this first hand. At least David Irving reads German so that's better than a lot of the suck-ups of the status quo line but he's spent time in prison for thought crime so who knows what may have been impressed on him afterwards (threat that family members will have a "car accident", etc).

There is just tons and tons of documents that nobody is ever going to get access to. All this documentation by the ton-load that is hidden away in secret vaults. Who knows what's there.

Maybe got that loud guy Alex whats-his-name ( forget his name ...ah Jones just came to me) mixed with David Irving.

I could never really listen to much of that Prison Planet guy .

David Irving's talks really show someone who has huge scope of knowledge though (much of it investigated first hand by himself)
