Question What is the Average Height of a Modern Nordic, Alpine or Med?

Many of the books I have been reading, such as the one by Coon, are 50 to 100 years old. Since that time the average height has changed considerably -- especially in those countries rearing the young poor off McDonald's fast-food -- as in the U.S.

Considering these changes, the question arises: What is the average height of a modern Nordic, Alpine or Med.? -- or Should these changes be factored in at all? Should historical averages be taken into account for say a Nordic who did not grow up eating fast-food -- or who is the average of the other members of his family?

I look forward to hearing everyone's opinion.

    Height depends largely on nutrition.
I've had somewhere a full report on heights of people since the palaeolithic era, I'll see if I can dig it up from somewhere. The Cro-Magnon men were of similar height to modern XXI century man, while the people from as recent as the medieval times were much shorter.

    Post Re: Changing height

Although Nordics are usually considered a tall race, an exact height to represent them all is unrealistic as nordics from different countries have different nutritional values. Even religion can play a part. A Catholic Nordic might be shorter than a Protestant Nordic because he had more siblings growing up and therefore had smaller food proportions. Even the different way a Dutchman rides his bike compared to a German might be something when said of posture.

Many countries are antiquated when postulating average height data and might refer to studies done 25 or more years ago. The Dutch have recently established an average height of nearly 6'1" but younger generations might be taller still. If anyone at this forum is Dutch, is this actually true?

Usually a desription tag of "tall" when describing a race is about 5'9" or 5'10" which most Western Countries and the Nordic race on a whole would fall into. Although this height it'self might not be tall when describing individuals, it is when factoring the average of all members of a race.

    Some stuff from Dodona:

In 1986, the average Polish recruit measured 175.2cm

    ...176.89cm in 1991

    ...177.8cm in 2002.

    Compare this to other countries...

    Portugal 172.13cm (1996)
    Bulgaria 173.6cm (1998)
    Spain 173.8cm (1998)
    France 174.9cm (1993)
    England 175.7cm (1985)
    Belgium 176.8cm (1993)
    Greece 177.6cm (1995)
    Austria 177.1cm (1995)
    Hungary 178.5cm (1997)
    Czech Republic 178.84cm (1998)
    Sweden 179.5cm (1999)
    Holland 184cm (2000)

    Some interesting points raised...

-Poles from the highest socio-economic groups are on average over 180cm.

-Polish average stature is still increasing, while Scandinavians seem to have stopped getting taller.

-The most important factors seem to be genetics, the mother's education level and affluence.

-The countries with the most socio-economically even societies (like Scandinavia) are also some of the tallest on average.

-Nations where milk and dairy products are consumed en masse are also tall.

-Lithuanians are on average over 180cm, but I can't find any more details than that here.

Is this some kind of formula that can give our height?

my height doesn't work with this formula.

my mother is155 cms, my father 166...
    me? ... 176 cms

My mother had probably poor food (even some lack of food) at the growing process.
my grandparents even suffered a lot more.

I come from the common portuguese working class families, many difficulties in the earlier XX (maybe even more before that)

Fascism (or a type of) provided that. The middle age servants and lords is for me a type of fascism!

Everyone doesn't get there, only the unfits sons of the "ones" can reach it.
This fascism is still here...In our factories and companies.

my country to improve must wait untill this guys are all dead and some of their's sons...

So the stature can't be a 100% genetically determined. It's only the most important of multiple factors in my view.

And as I said I'm compared to 18-30 years old Germans with a stronger Dinaric, Faelid or "big Alpine"/Borreby part, what is not seldom, only of medium stature!

The average values of the countries may not be accurate for the most recent generation.

I heard on the radio and read on Inet several months ago that Russian average height according to recent studies (2004) is 182 cm, but I'm still looking for the official scientific source.
