    Mad Ein Schiff wird kommen / One ship will arrive

    The German shipping trades were in decline since the 1980s already,
    especially the ship building industries.

    The ship fright trading management was quite successful though until the second half of the Millennium.

    One more sign of the downfall is the bank 'HSH-Nordbank' being under state's vision to be scuttled and sold.

    The newspaper Hambuger Abendblatt , which I occassionally buy , has a daily listing of ships
    quaying in Hamburg .

    Today no ship arriving under German flag is listed :

    Ship Type / Nationality / Size in BRZ

    Passenger ship / Panama / 95'000
    Container ship / Liberia / 73'000
    Container ship / Liberia / 17'000
    Container ship / Cyprus / 16'000 / Voronezh : Russian name
    Container ship / Liberia / 16'000 / Baltic Tern
    Container ship / Antigua + Barbuda / 16'000
    Roll on Roll off / France / 15'000 / Airbus RoRo
    Container ship / Great Britain / 11'000
    Fright ship / Cyprus / 10'000
    Fright ship / Antigua + Barbuda / 9'000

    Rhine Water Level low Autumn 2018

    The Rhine is said to be Europe's most frequent inland shipping way .

    This Autumn the Rhine has a very low level of water flowing , and ships and barges
    are just able to carry ⅓rd of their freight capabillities .

    The chemical industry's in- and output is reduced , the BASF company even using the wording "force majeure"
    to excuse any delays in deliveries .

    The electric current producing plants are low on black coal , and one nuclear power plant has
    slightly reduced it's output by 1/14th because of missing cooling water .

    The Big Energy Utilities cmpanies RWE and EnBW have difficulties to keep 5.8 GigaWatts of Electrical Power
    delivering into the grid .

    At Kaub the water level is just at 33cm ( 1 foot, 1 inch ) , and expected to decline towards 23 cm ( 4 inches less ) .

    This is reported by the Greek maritime news Hellenic Shipping News .com ;
    Greece being with more than 700 units the world's leading shipping oil tanker owner ,
    before Japan and the USA with each more than 300 (according to wikipedia) .
    Critically low water levels on the River Rhine, the main European shipping artery, are jeopardizing shipments of a wide range of different commodities, such as grains, chemicals and coal, and are affecting operations of both manufacturing and power generating plants along the river, which rely heavily on its waters for transportation and cooling purposes.

    Another maritime news website found today : Marine Insight .

    The German port of Kiel is going to install shore cabled electricity power supply for the
    regular ferry lines to Oslo, Norway, and Gothenburg, Sweden .

    With this form of electrical power supply , these ships don't need to let their power generators running ,
    while being at quai , thus probably reducing the environmental airial pollution , if the regular power plants
    produce greener energy .
    As of spring 2019, it will be possible to supply big cruise ferries with all the electrical power they need during the time they are berthed in Kiel. “We are taking action to make a substantial contribution to air purification”, said Minister Buchholz. “The use of onshore power supply sustainably reduces ship emissions during time spent in port. We support this trend-setting project and beyond that advocate at government level to improve the overall economic conditions for the use of onshore power.”

    The both arctic routes north of Russia and North of Canada are being in use ,
    effectively reducing the time on sea for freighters .
    It is claimed , that an ore delivery from Quebec, Canada to China took 26 days , instead of 41 days
    using the Panama-Canal route .

    From that point of view , the Global Warming has some advantages .

    Here a ship transporting little boats like tugs from China to Rotterdam using the
    Northern Russian Route :
    In a first for Damen, the Tasmanic Winter took the Northern Sea Route along Russia’s north coast, which can reduce the journey time by up to eight days compared with the traditional southern route.

    Cyprus

    The Maritine Professions operating boats and ships include

    * Boat Ownership
    * Ship Management
    * Boat Charterers

    Cyprus claims , that Ship Management makes the country

    * 3rd World largest Ship Management center
    * Cypriotic third-party ship managemnet accounts for 20% of third-party managed global fleet

    * 11th World largest fleet

    * 24 million gross tonnage are flagged Cypriotic
    * 3rd largest fleet in the European Union

    * Cyprus together with Malta and Greece have the largest fleet in the EU

    Ships are taxed by tonnage , not by companies's earnings ,
    a somewhat simple communist taxation system , in my opinion .

    The Cypriot flag — which portrays the shape of the island and two olive branches on a white background symbolising peace — flies high and wide in the eastern Mediterranean. The small island nation is the world’s third largest ship management centre, accounting for one fifth of the global third-party managed fleet. Cypriot ships are the 11th biggest fleet globally. And the shipping industry directly accounts for approximately seven percent of the Cypriot economy, ...

    And the deputy minister of shipping is a female named "Natasa Pilides" ...

    USA : The Merchant Marine Act of 1920 , the so called Jones Act

    Some statistical data and the Jones Act :

    Before the outbreak of the First World War ,

    * England had the world's largest merchant fleet , held more than 50% of oceanic tonnage

    * Germany was second , and held 11%

    * The USA was third , and held 8%

    The article says :
    .. the main goal of the Jones Act was to ensure a domestic shipbuilding capacity in the United States and second, a ready supply of vessels in times of war and emergency.
    A Shipping Act of 1916 had been introduced to create a Merchant Marine , and when German submarines
    attacked US-American merchant vessels , things were spiralling upwards .

    A surplus of 2000 merchant ships had been manufactured , who needed management ,
    and so the Jones Act had been introduced , to secure an existing Merchant Navy in times of war .

    Fast forward to today , there are only 180 commercial ships left of a tonnage size of 1 thousand and more ,
    that sail under the US Flag ;
    and just 96 of these fall under the Jones Act .

    In comparision , Panama would have the world's largest fleet with six thousand there registered vessels ,
    in a world of more than 41 thousand active merchant vessels .

    China, South Korea and Japan are building 90% of the world's available ships ,
    with South Korea subsidizing shipbuilding massively .

    More to read , which is an opinion article , for the reformation of the Jones Act ,
    and not a total scuttling , as proposed by an organisation named CATO :
