Group seeks equal access for minorities

By Luther Keith / The Detroit News

Ask Greg Murray to talk about the overall quality of life in Macomb County and the former Detroiter bubbles with the enthusiasm of someone hired by the county’s chamber of commerce.

“You can call the police and before you put the phone down, they are at your door,” Murray said. “The streets are clean, the garbage is picked up and the schools are excellent.”

Ask him about county sensitivity to minority concerns and African-American issues and he sounds like a civil rights activist.

“We’ve had issues of racism in county government hiring and the treatment of minority employees,” said Murray, spokesman for the Macomb County Ministerial Alliance, a clergy advocacy group for African-American social and economic justice issues.

“We are entitled to equal access. We have never asked for quotas, set asides or lower standards. All we have asked for is equal access and equal treatment.”

    ...

When Detroit’s population exodus accelerated over the last four decades, many white residents chose to move to once sleepy and heavily rural Macomb County. The county is still one of the fastest growing areas in southeastern Michigan with nearly 800,000 residents. In recent years it has become more diverse and African-Americans now comprise about 3 percent of the county’s population.

Well, yes, that's what I meant. Pardon my poor choice of words.

There's the rub. I assume this is "White flight." Detroit was once a great city, but it has become a jungle due to Black lawlessness and incompetence.

Whites who don't want to live with "diversity" shouldn't have to. People who value racial diversity can find it if that's what they want, but the multiracialists aren't living if they can't force everybody else to play their game. America is not a free country.

How do you force equality? Quotas, affirmative action are all forms of institutionalized racism. Fighting racism with racism doesn't make sense.

I feel it's compensation. Blacks have only had "equal opportunity" everywhere in the U.S. since the 1960s. However, there are plenty of people who still have their biases and would easily pick a white over a black for a job, and the playing field still isn't equal. I don't mind Affirmative Action that much, seeing as how it's really compensation. I don't have to worry about getting into college, anyway.
