Stephen Hawking Religious Funeral Service - Great St Mary's Church in Cambridge

What do atheists think of Christian religious funeral of the great scientist ?

Is the religious funeral of Hawking a proof of Death- bed conversione to Christ ?

( Only the relatives could know the last will of Stephen Hawking )

As far as I know the Church (Catholic or Anglican ) before giving consent for the religious funerals checks whether the deceased is baptized and if he believed in God ( Death-bed conversion )

I don't think that any Anglican/Catholic priest can give the consent for a religious funeral ( inside a Christian Church ) .. just for "fun" of the relatives and/or curious people.

I don't think that relatives asked for a religious funeral if there was not a valid reason.

For atheists and non-baptized persons there is no funeral in the Church.

That's a really good question that should be investigated.

In former times, your arguments would definitely have applied but the modern churches have become so heretical in their orientation and so inconsequent in the observance of their own dogmas, laws, and regulations, that I think that everything is possible.

Maybe Hawking was baptized and officially never left his church. In the case of the Catholics, it's not possible to leave the Church anyway (as far as the Church is concerned). The Church can only leave you (by formal excommunication).

The Church would still consider him a Catholic, even if he declared himself an atheist or would have registered himself with the state that he is no longer a Catholic. There is an excommunication latae sententiae in this case but it is revoked by Confession. Confessions are private and anonymous, of course, and can be done before any Catholic priest anywhere. If the official Church has no information whether a person confessed at any time anywhere before she died (as it would apply in Hawking's case), it will consider her a Catholic and she can get a Catholic funeral. Not certain how the Anglicans deal with this issue.

But even if he had never been baptized, the churches nowadays would probably make an exception for someone like Hawking, referring to "Baptism of Desire" or some other nonsense, telling us that he had explored God "in his own way by uncovering the fingerprints of God in the universe." Some neo-Catholic bishop or cardinal even suggested that Malcolm Young from AC/DC might now play before the eternal throne of God. Yeah, right ... hitting the strings of the rhythm guitar to Highway to Hell, I guess.

I'd like to get a copy of the Homily, for sure.

A bit off topic, but the sound of AC/DC is unique, indeed, and I have heard many people stating that Angus looks like a demon when he is on fire.

    Practice creates masters, I guess.

IIRC, Hawking's wife and children are Christian.
