Don't Come to Iceland if You Cannot Behave

Iceland is a booming tourist destination.
Every day the people who live here have to deal with idiots.
The former "warm welcome" tourists got from Icelanders is turning into aggression, hate, and anger.

Visitors treat the country like a big Disneyland, ignoring common sense, laws, rules.

If YOU want to come to Iceland you should know some things:

Iceland has almost NO public land. Even great sightseeing spots like Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss and even the famous glacier lagoon until last year - are private owned. Parking lots along Road 1 are private property and not owned by county or state. Every piece of land left and right from the road is privately owned - even if there is no fence around it.

    Treat it that way!
    Do not cross closed fences.
Do not feed animals you do not own (would you like strangers, 50 a day, to give treats to your dog/cat?).
    Do not ignore signs.
    Do not drive offroad.
Do not camp outside of camping grounds (which is forbidden since Nov 2015; except in the highlands).

Here are some "funny" stories from tourists from the last weeks and months:

"French travellers surprised to learn you cannot camp in people's backyards in Reykjavík"

Tourists disregard warning signs at Gullfoss waterfall

German traveller facing heavy fines after criminal off-road driving in Central Highlands

Rubbed Shit On Tourist’s Windshield To Protest Outdoor Pooping

Foreign travellers break into summer cottage, surprised when owner reacts angrily

That's all a difficult question, because I'm a staunch supporter of the Freedom to Roam, because AFAIK it traditionally works relatively well in the countries that have it such as Scotland, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway or Finland. The general rule is that you don't leave places in a predicament ou wouldn't want to find your own property in, and for decades and centuries this has worked towards increasing a generally more conscious treatment of the environment and other people's property.

Naturally this only works well in sane times when people know how to behave though. In times when people act on their vacation like absolute idiots bereft of common sense and respect, and where a lot of ethnic others without understanding for the long Germanic tradition of the Freedom to Roam, it's completely at danger. And it's even worse if people come to a country which doesn't have it - and yet themselves come from a country that doesn't have it either. That's just disrespectful and dumb behaviour.
-In kalte Schatten versunken...

(Heimdalls Wacht, In kalte Schatten versunken, stanzas 4-6)

There is the same law in Iceland though it was modified as well as the law to camp everywhere. It is simply not possible when a country of 350.000 gets 2.5 million visitors every year.

It just not works with 15 Happy Campers parking in one spot at the side of the road. It just does not work with 50 bus travelers running through a field with horses.

By the way: You all have to change your idea of Iceland. For those with Facebook : here you can see how it really looks today.

The text says: Just for your amusement: This is the current state of Gullfoss on a winter day in the middle of February. Took 45mins in the waiting line to get to the parking lot with café.

Just let other Scandinavians come in (and not others).... as Scandinavians are aware of high level of public right of access....and there are't too many of us.

(In Finland foreigners might come to pick up berries and mushrooms just from your summer house's ''garden'' ... thinking it's ''ok'')

That would be a good idea. I'd fear the greed of many Icelanders, especially Reykjavik based people, who don't understand and see what's happening outside of the town, will prevent any measurements of protection of nature and people.

Hatred ... and all of the sudden, Iceland feels like home.

Are there any unreasonable limits on the freedom of expression yet (incitement, Holocaust denial, etc.) a peace-loving tourist such as myself should be aware of?

And what do you say to the accusation by former guests that there are no f'n trees in Iceland (but a few f'n birches) and that this is f'n depressing?

    Click to play me:

    Honestly, it's an environmental tragedy.

At the time of human settlement almost 1150 years ago, birch forest and woodland covered 25-40% of Iceland's land area (...) The extent of Icelandic birchwoods probably reached a post-glacial minimum of less than 1% of total land area around the mid 20th century, perhaps even less than 0.5%

Having lived in a tourist/resort area I can understand why Icelanders are turned off by the tourist. What I don't understand though is they call it "tourist season", but they don't let us shoot them.
Life is like a fire hydrant- sometimes you help people put out their fires, but most of the time you just get peed on by every dog in the neighborhood.

Yes. Scandinavians (and Finns => Nordic countries people) have been able to travel without passports, move to live, study and/or work in another Nordic countries .... totally freely .... already since 1950's (incl. Iceland). Some 40 years ealier than time of EU or present days mass tourists. That did't harm Iceland back then, and that alone would't harm you today.

You just need to learn to deal with these things like Americans do...

Most people think as they are trained to think, and most people make a majority.

You might find it hard to believe, being a child of the Orwellian Socialist egalitarian dream, also known as the New World Order, but before WW1, in the Old World Order, anyone could travel anywhere without a passport or an ID. It would have been difficult to travel otherwise because they didn't exist.
