    Germanic Affinity

Since when did Germanics have mutual recognition of common heritage as distinct from neighboring metaethnics? Was this before, during or after the Voelkerwanderung, Vikings, Ostsiedlung, Reformation, German Confederation, etc?

It has started with the Nordic Bronze Age when the Germanics has separated from the the Proto-Italicus (Samnites, Sabins, Latins, etc.) and the Proto-Kelt tribes.

"Remember that, even when those who move you be kings or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before God, you cannot say, "But I was told by others to do thus,"or that virtue "was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice."

Has group identity always been a conscious thing, though? That's what I'm getting at.

    Yes, to some extent.
Life is like a fire hydrant- sometimes you help people put out their fires, but most of the time you just get peed on by every dog in the neighborhood.
