U.S. alters its spelling of Ukraine city

U.S. alters its spelling of Ukraine city
By Harry Dunphy, Associated Press Writer

The Ukrainian capital of Kiev is now Kyiv, as far as the U.S. government is concerned. And the State Department says the spelling change has nothing to do with American hopes of wooing the one-time Soviet republic more into the Western orbit.

About half of Ukraine's 47 million people are Russian speakers, and Kiev is the Russian spelling.

Ukraine's Western-leaning President Viktor Yushchenko, elected on the wave of the 2004 Orange Revolution's mass protests against election fraud, has sought to take his nation out of Russia's influence and join NATO and the European Union.

"I don't think this decision has anything reflective in it," State Department spokesman Tom Casey said Thursday.

The department announced the change in a memorandum Oct. 3, instructing officials to use the Kyiv spelling in all communications regarding Ukraine.

When a reporter asked about the change Thursday, Casey said there is a U.S. Board of Geographic Names with representatives from several government departments, including the State Department, that establishes uniform geographic name usage for the federal government.

The Associated Press continues to spell the name of the capital Kiev.

I'm glad you note the hypocrisy spewed by the feds in this case as well. In order to bring the Ukraine into the fold and to control them as a so-called "ally" for future wars they intend to start, they are subtly saying, "Hey, we support your sovereignty as a nation unto yourselves and differentiate your government from the government in Moscow, which previously controlled you." Of course, the feds' domestic policy in terms of the South is the exact opposite.

AW: Re: U.S. alters its spelling of Ukraine city

For me it seems like one of the many signs for a worsening between the former super power Russia and the only remaining one USA. The USA want to stop Russia, which increased its influence under the rule of Putin again. The USA see the strengthening Russia as a threat for their own geopolitical interests especially in far eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. As for Ukraine they forget to mention that the pro Western Orange Revolution has failed and at the last elections the pro Russia Party of Yanukovych has won the majority and he is now prime ministre of the Ukraine.

That's true; a lot of the country, especially in the eastern regions of the Ukraine (where coincidentally there are a lot more ethnic Russians), is very pro-Russian. Yeah, and you'd better believe both the USA and Russia feel intimidated by each other on quite a few levels. The federal government is hypocritically speaking ill of Putin's power, but Russia remains even more so in the USA's sight because of the Muslim extremist separatists in Chechnya. For a nation purveying a "Global War on Terror," the manner in which Russia handles it is of particular interest.
