    God, Leadership, Flemings and Archery:
Contemporary Perceptions of Victory and Defeat at the Battle of Sluys, 1340

The Battle of Sluys was the first bigger, direct confrontation between the English and French armies at the beginning of the Hundred Years' war.
The French fleet, larger and better equipped than the English one, was almost entirely destroyed. Afterwards, the English coast and the crucial wool and wine trading between it and the Low Countries was secure from raiding for decades. It additionally paved the way for the English invasion armies into France.
