German Squad Tactics in World War 2

Very interesting information about the organisation and tactics of the basic German infantry squad in WW2.
There are also dozens of other interesting videos about modern combat on this channel.

    Hilarious Austrian accent though.

An, apparently American, training film on the matter.

Assault rifles have changed that. The German squad used to be centered around the MG, and the main weapon of the soldiers were hand grenades. The bolt-action rifle was, well... not to much use, and the main purpose of the squad was to carry ammo for the MG and throw hand grenades. The presence of assault rifles changes that.

Today it would e.g. be a most valid tactic to flank and envelop the enemy with riflemen and engage him from a distance, and then move up heavy weapons like the MG instead of leading with it as the Germans did in the early 40s.

I don't know what type of squad tactics are being deployed now, but in the 1980s we used German WWII tactics. Everything was based off the fire power of the M60 medium machine gun( I was a M60 gunner ) a weapon that was more of less copied from the MG42. Every soldier carried a M16A1 full auto tactical rifle ( assault rifle is a poor term used by anti-gun advocates ). The M60 was used for cover fire until the regular rifle troops were close enough and then in went grenades and more rifle fire. We used the same exact staggering attacks of cover fire, move, cover fire, move and so on. Since the M60 was lighter than the MG42 it was always place second behind the point man on patrol, this allowed rapid movement of the M60 to the front of the action. With an M60 you only have the gunner and one assistant, all SF and light infantry units there was no gunners assistant we had to carry our own ammo and extra barrel.

Besides the Germans invented the " assault rifle " the Stg 43 and MP44 they did not change tactics late in the war because it was so effective.
Life is like a fire hydrant- sometimes you help people put out their fires, but most of the time you just get peed on by every dog in the neighborhood.
