    The Tauros Programme

The Tauros Programme is a new project with the same goal as the Heck brothers had in the nineteenth century: to back-breed the extinct aurochs and return it to European nature.

The wild, extinct supercow returning to Europe

Our ancestors learned to respect the auroch, and immortalized them in pre-historic cave paintings.
The earliest cows were mighty beasts that stood almost as tall as elephants, with lean, powerful frames and fearsome horns that would make a hunter think twice.
For thousands of years the aurochs were the largest land mammals in Europe, until the rise of human civilization decimated their numbers, and the last of the species died in Poland in 1627 -- one of the first recorded cases of extinction.
Conservationists now believe the loss of the keystone herbivore was tragic for biodiversity in Europe, arguing that the aurochs' huge appetite for grazing provided a natural "gardening service" that maintained landscapes and created the conditions for other species to thrive.
The theory is now being put to the test, as a "near 100% substitute" of the beast is returned to the forests.

This would be really cool to one of these in real life!

They talk about the Bison project here in the US, and it has had some success but some major failings to. I hope that is not the same with the Auroch.
Life is like a fire hydrant- sometimes you help people put out their fires, but most of the time you just get peed on by every dog in the neighborhood.

Lots of landrace stocks such as the Chillingham whites are similar to the aurochs. If you want to see the effect they have on ecosystems just look at places like the Epping Forest where primitive breeds still graze in woodland.

Another good project would be ressurrect the European Cave Lion what extincted in the Upper Paleolithic.

You must be joking! You want those things running around in the forests of Hungary chomping down on people out for a hike?

No thanks. The serengeti might be an interesting place to visit but I wouldn't want it transplanted to europe.

It would be a reasonable solution that we put them to the Zoo or the mostly uninhabited Ural Mountain.

Well, there is of course a great difference with the Tauros Programme. The aurochs has gone extinct due to human activity. But there is still a niche in our ecosystem reserved for this animal. The European cave lion lived under completely different circumstances. It's not just that humans have progressed, but the climate has also changed. Many animals that lived during the last ice age have gone extinct and there is a good reason for that. There is no place for them in our current ecosystem.

Bringing them back to life is also technologically a different story. You have to have a genetic blueprint and clone the animals. This could be an interesting experiment, but it wouldn't be wise to release them in the wild. There already seems to be some work in progress for a 'pleistocene park' in Siberia. The aurochs might have gone extinct, but there are still living descendants. So by back-breeding, you're not really 'recreating' the animal, but you simply change the direction of the animals back to how their ancestors once were. In this sense you could argue that the animal has never really gone extinct.

Still, there are objections. The humans that have caused the decline of this animal are still here and have multiplied. In my opinion it is a good idea, but it's best if the animal is introduced to areas that are already wild and have an almost complete ecosystem. If all large wild animals that are native to an area can already thrive there succesfully, without being dependent on human intervention, one might start a reintroduction of the new aurochs.

I support rewilding but its unknown why the cave lion and cave hyena went extinct. They are obviously unaffected by warming nor were they likely predators on true megafauna such as mammoths or coelodont rhinos. Remember the commonest components of a mammoth fauna survive today with a reduced range.
