    Why were the lyrics banned? And do you mean in the BRD?

    No, I'm from the GDR. The lyrics of Auferstanden auf Ruinen were banned because it's about a united Germany. The first GDR politicians wanted to unite with the West but then there were political tensions between the two, because they hated each other's ideologies. The West politicians didn't want Communism in their country and the East politicians considered the West Fascists. So then an aggressive politics of separation from the Western Germans began (the Berlin Wall was built).

    Written in 1949, the anthem reflects the early stages of German separation, in which continuing progress towards reunification of the occupation zones was seen by most Germans as appropriate and natural. Consequently, Becher's lyrics develop several connotations of "unity" and combine them with "fatherland" (einig Vaterland), meaning Germany as a whole. However, this concept soon would not conform to an increasingly icy Cold War context, especially after the Berlin Wall had been erected in 1961 by the East German government.

    In 1973, East and West Germany were admitted to the United Nations simultaneously, following talks between the two governments that conferred a degree of mutual recognition. The term Germany was later removed from the GDR constitution, and on official occasions only the anthem's melody was played. No new lyrics were ever written to replace Becher's.

    The text wasn't technically banned. There was never an official law which prohibited its use, it just wasn't sang at official occasions. But of course this had an impact on the population's conception. It was somewhat similar to the situation in the FRG, where the first two stanzas from the Deutschlandlied aren't technically banned either. They aren't really illegal, but they're not official and singing them is frowned upon or considered a "nazi" thing.

    Since I'm totally biased, it has to be the "Maple Leaf Forever", Canada's original anthem and which it should still be IMO instead of that other rather dull and PC one. It served us well for over a hundred years and it is the one our fine soldiers went off to war with on their lips and in their hearts. Thankfully it survives in military use and by being played publicly from time to time. Even the tune is inspiring when set to the pipes as in this YouTube offering (but ignore the middle bit of the arrangement which for some reason they thought fit to insert): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvhIJKQyP4o

    The Maple Leaf Forever

    In days of yore, from Britain's shore,
    Wolfe, the dauntless hero came,
    And planted firm Britannia's flag,
    On Canada's fair domain.
    Here may it wave, our boast, our pride,
    And joined in love together,
    The thistle, shamrock, rose entwine
    The Maple Leaf forever!

    Chorus:
    The Maple Leaf, our emblem dear,
    The Maple Leaf forever!
    God save our Queen, and Heaven bless,
    The Maple Leaf forever!

    At Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane,
    Our brave fathers, side by side,
    For freedom, homes, and loved ones dear,
    Firmly stood and nobly died;
    And those dear rights which they maintained,
    We swear to yield them never!
    Our watchword evermore shall be,
    The Maple Leaf forever!

    Chorus:

    Our fair Dominion now extends
    From Cape Race to Nootka Sound;
    May peace forever be our lot,
    And plenteous store abound:
    And may those ties of love be ours
    Which discord cannot sever,
    And flourish green o'er freedom's home
    The Maple Leaf forever!

    Chorus:

    On merry England's far famed land
    May kind heaven sweetly smile,
    God bless old Scotland evermore
    and Ireland's Em'rald Isle!
    And swell the song both loud and long
    Till rocks and forest quiver!
    God save our Queen and Heaven bless
    The Maple Leaf forever!

    Chorus:

    As much as I vouch for "I Vow to Thee my Country" as the best, if unofficial, national anthem, this is most probably due to my unhealthy obsession with the song "Jupiter" from which it was taken.

    Something I have read a few times whilst perusing this thread is the idea or practice of, for want of a better phrase, "county anthems". With this thought in mind, I feel I may have to make one for Kent in a few...decades...once my knowledge of both the lore of my most precious locality and also my musical theory is adept enough to do so...

    But don't forget that we have two of them.. "Ja vi elsker" has become the traditional one, but has actually never formally been recognized as the national anthem. This one however, is the original one, that is seldom played at formal occations anymore today:

    Nationalsang

    Sønner af Norges det ældgamle Rige,
    Sjunger til Harpens den festlige Klang!
    Mandigt og højtidsfuldt Tonen lad stige,
    Fædrenelandet indvies vor Sang.
    Fædreneminder herligt oprinder,
    Hvergang vi nævne vor Fædrenestavn.
    Svulmende Hierter og glødende Kinder
    Hylde det elskte, det hellige Navn.

    Flyver vor Aand til de hensvundne Tider,
    herligt den skuer vort Fædrelands Glands;
    Kæmpere gange om Dovrefjelds Sider,
    Vandre til Ledingefærd som til Dands.
    Mandige Skarer Bølgen befarer,
    Norriges Ros bær til fjerneste Kyst;
    Hjemme er Kæmpere nok som forsvarer
    Arvede Frihed med modige Bryst.

    Medens de Staalklædte prøve sin Styrke,
    Medens de stande i kæmpende Rad,
    Skjalde og Sagamænd Kunsterne dyrke,
    Riste i Runer de herligste Qvad.
    Konninger bolde Scepteret holde,
    Røgte med Viisdom det hellige Kald;
    Gennem Aarhundreders Nat deres Skjolde
    Genstraale klart i Erindringens Hal.

    Oldtid! du svandt; men din hellige Flamme
    Blusser i Nordmandens Hjerte endnu:
    End er af Æt og af Kraft han den Samme,
    End staaer til Frihed og Ære hans Hu;
    Og naar han kvæder Norriges Hæder,
    Svulmer hans Hjerte af Stolthed og Lyst;
    Ham er selv Sydens de yndigste Steder
    Intet mod Norriges sneedækte Kyst.

    Frihedens Tempel i Nordmandens Dale
    Stander saa herligt i Lye af hans Fjeld;
    Frit tør han tænke, og frit tør han tale,
    Frit tør han virke til Norriges Held.
    Fuglen i Skove, Nordhavets Vove
    Friere er ej end Norriges Mand;
    Villig dog lyder han selvgivne Love,
    Trofast mod Konning og Fædreneland.

    Elskede Land med de skyhøje Bjerge,
    Frugtbare Dale og fiskrige Kyst!
    Troskap og Kjærlighed fro vi dig sverge;
    Kalder du, bløde vi for dig med Lyst.
    Evig du stande, elskte blandt Lande!
    Frit som den Storm der omsuser dit Fjeld!
    Og medens Bølgen omsnoer dine Strande,
    Stedse du voxe i Hæder og Held!

    Henrik Anker Bjerregaard (1819)

    Before this one, we actually had another wich was of a more rebellious nature, in the form of a drinking song, written by Bishop Nordahl Bruun in 1771. The text was percieved as anti Royal by the then danish union king so the song was banned and the lyrics confiscated. However, it didn't help much and the song was sung on happy occations all over the country and has survived as a romantic drinking song to this day.

    For Norge, Kjæmpers Fødeland,
    Vi denne Skaal vil tømme,
    Og naar vi først faae Blod paa Tand,
    Vi sødt om Frihed drømme;
    Dog vaagne vi vel op engang
    Og bryde Lænker, Baand og Tvang;
    For Norge, Kjæmpers Fødeland,
    Vi denne Skaal udtømme!

    Hver tapper Helt, blandt Klipper fød,
    Vi drikke vil til Ære;
    Hver ærlig Norsk, som Lænker brød,
    Skal evig elsket være!
    Den vrede Livvagts Vaabenbrag
    Forklarer trolig Nordmænds Sag.
    Hver ærlig Norsk, blandt Klipper fød,
    Vi drikke nu til Ære!

    En Skaal for Dig, min kjække Ven,
    Og for de norske Piger!
    Og har Du en, saa Skaal for den!
    Og Skam faae den, som sviger!
    Og Skam faae den, som elsker Tvang
    Og hader Piger, Viin og Sang!
    En Skaal for Dig min kjække Ven,
    Og for de norske Piger!

    Og nok en Skaal for Norges Fjeld,
    For Klipper, Snee og Bakker!
    Hør Dovres Echo raabe: «Held!»
    For Skaalen tre Gang takker.
    Ja tre Gang tre skal alle Fjeld
    For Norges Sønner raabe Held;
    Endnu en Skaal for Dig mit Fjeld,
    For Klipper, Snee og Bakker

    Its also worth mentioning that we have about 100-150 othet national psalms, hymns and songs that are loved and an integral part of our cultural heritage.

    Have any of you ever attended an international sporting event and listened as the American fans chanted the obnoxious sounding "U.S.A!, U.S.A! U.S.A.!"?
    Europeans register disgust at such a lack of creativity and those same Americans accuse them right back with charges of typical Euro-snootiness. One writer I read wondered why Americans did not have a real anthem to sing, whereas the European nations all had them and were quite beautiful to listen to.

    The unofficial national hymn of Namibia:

    Hart wie Kameldornholz ist unser Land
    Und trocken sind seine Riviere.
    Die Klippen, sie sind von der Sonne verbrannt
    Und scheu sind im Busch die Tiere.
    |: Und sollte man uns fragen:
    Was hält euch denn hier fest?
    Wir könnten nur sagen:
    Wir lieben Südwest! : |

    Doch unsre Liebe ist teuer bezahlt
    Trotz allem, wir lassen dich nicht
    Weil unsere Sorgen überstrahlt
    Der Sonne hell leuchtendes Licht.
    |: Und sollte man uns fragen:
    Was hält euch denn hier fest?
    Wir könnten nur sagen:
    Wir lieben Südwest! : |

    Und kommst du selber in unser Land
    Und hast seine Weiten gesehen
    Und hat unsre Sonne ins Herz dir gebrannt
    Dann kannst du nicht wieder gehen.
    |: Und sollte man dich fragen:
    Was hält dich denn hier fest?
    Du könntest nur sagen:
    Ich liebe Südwest! : |

    O Canada <3 & national anthem of the Faroe Islands &

    Mítt alfagra land

    Tú alfagra land mítt, mín dýrasta ogn!
    á vetri so randhvítt, á sumri við logn,
    tú tekur meg at tær so tætt í tín favn.
    Tit oyggjar so mætar, Guð signi tað navn,
    sum menn tykkum góvu, tá teir tykkum sóu.
    Ja, Guð signi Føroyar, mítt land!

    Hin roðin, sum skínur á sumri í líð,
    hin ódnin, sum týnir mangt lív vetrartíð,
    og myrkrið, sum fjalir mær bjartasta mál,
    og ljósið, sum spælir mær sigur í sál:
    alt streingir, ið tóna, sum vága og vóna,
    at eg verji Føroyar, mítt land.

    Eg nígi tí niður í bøn til tín, Guð:
    Hin heilagi friður mær falli í lut!
    Lat sál mína tváa sær í tíni dýrd!
    So torir hon vága - av Gudi væl skírd -
    at bera tað merkið, sum eyðkennir verkið,
    ið varðveitir Føroyar, mítt land!
    English Translation
    My Fairest Land

    My land, oh most beauteous, possession most dear,
    Thou drawest me to thee, embracing me near;
    becalmed in the summer, in winter snow covered,
    magnificent islands, by God named beloved.
    The name which men gave thee when they thee discovered,
    Oh, God bless thee, Faroes my land.

    Bright gleam, which in summer makes hill-tops so fair;
    rough gale, which in winter drives men to despair;
    oh life taking storm, oh conquest of soul,
    all making sweet music uniting the whole.
    Each hoping and trusting, inspiring us all,
    To guard thee, O Faroes my land.

    And therefore, I kneel down, to Thee God, in prayer,
    may peaceful my lot be, and do thou me spare,
    my soul cleansed; in glory; I ask Thee to bless,
    when I raise my banner and venture the stress.
    The sign of my task, be it lifted on high,
    To guard thee, O Faroes my land.

    1. Australian National Anthem

    Advance Australia Fair

    Lyrics:

    Australians all let us rejoice,
    For we are young and free;
    We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
    Our home is girt by sea;
    Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
    Of beauty rich and rare;
    In history's page, let every stage
    Advance Australia fair!
    In joyful strains then let us sing,
    "Advance Australia fair!"

    Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
    We'll toil with hearts and hands;
    To make this Commonwealth of ours
    Renowned of all the lands;
    For those who've come across the seas
    We've boundless plains to share;
    With courage let us all combine
    To advance Australia fair.
    In joyful strains then let us sing
    "Advance Australia fair!"

    2. South Korean National Anthem: "Aegukga"

    I love its melody rather than its lyrics. Sounds peaceful and calm.

    3. Canadian National Anthem: "O Canada"

    Lyrics:

    O Canada!
    Our home and native land!
    True patriot love in all thy sons command.
    With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
    The True North strong and free!
    From far and wide,
    O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
    God keep our land glorious and free!
    O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
    O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

    O Canada! Where pines and maples grow.
    Great prairies spread and lordly rivers flow.
    How dear to us thy broad domain,
    From East to Western Sea,
    Thou land of hope for all who toil!
    Thou True North, strong and free!
    God keep our land glorious and free!
    O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
    O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

    O Canada! Beneath thy shining skies
    May stalwart sons and gentle maidens rise,
    To keep thee steadfast through the years
    From East to Western Sea,
    Our own beloved native land!
    Our True North, strong and free!
    God keep our land glorious and free!
    O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
    O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

    Ruler supreme, who hearest humble prayer,
    Hold our dominion within thy loving care;
    Help us to find, O God, in thee
    A lasting, rich reward,
    As waiting for the Better Day,
    We ever stand on guard.
    God keep our land glorious and free!
    O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
    O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
