    The Best Break-Up Songs Ever

What are, in your view, the best love songs ever, both musically and lyrically? Here's one of mine:

Conjure One ft. Sinéad O'Connor - Tears from the moon

Couldn't sleep, so I went out walking
Thinking about you and hearing us talking
And all the things I should have said
    Echo now, inside my head

I feel something falling from the sky
I'm so sad I made the angels cry

    Tears from the moon
    Fall down like rain
    I reach for you
    I reach in vain

    Tears from the moon
    Tears from the moon

It just ain't fair, this thing called loving
When one's still there and the other feels nothing
I would have done anything for you
I still love you, baby I adore you

All day I keep from falling apart
But at night when the sky gets dark

    Tears from the moon
    Fall down like rain
    I reach for you
    I reach in vain

    Stop, stop haunting me
    It should be easy
As easy as when you stopped wanting me
    Eyhhh..

    Tears from the moon
    Fall down like rain
    I reach for you
    I reach in vain

    Tears from the moon
    Fall down like rain
    But tears from the moon
    Can't wash away the pain

    Tears from the moon
    Tears from the moon

Since classic country is one of favorite genres they have this topic beat hands down.

One of the saddest unrequited love songs I've ever heard is "I want to die" by Mortal Love. It expresses the pain and sorrow of loving someone one-sidedly. Love is at the same time one of the most powerful and most vulnerable human emotions. You open your heart to another person and essentially give away a part of yourself that is otherwise kept locked from the rest of the world. When shared, love can be empowering, motivating, beautiful. Otherwise, it can be an excruciating experience. This gothic song expresses this feeling of hopelessness and despair.

Mortal Love - I Want To Die

I'm too tired of this life
All I need is my big sleep
    You are so far away
    You love someone else

    Another day passed me by
    Another day filled with pain
    You are not here
    You're with someone else

    I love you to death
    You love someone else
    So I just wanna die

    Create hate
I hate myself for loving you

"We have touched for the last time
You are long gone, in love with someone else
I now fear nothing but life itself
And I have learned that living is just a slow way to die
I do not believe in life or in love anymore.
The joy I feel are the joys of emptiness
I hate myself for loving you
The fear I feel night after night has developed into a disease
No-one can see the emptiness in my eyes.
To escape life itself now seems the only solution
With relief I look forward of letting go of the pain
Finally... there is peace in my soul
To lie dead without a concern , without a tear,
    You own my heart
And life without you is so imensly painful
Just to think of you, talk about you, dream of you makes tears stream down
    my face
I cannot imagine happiness without your beautiful smile, your angelic face,
your wonderful body and your good heart:
You are everything , I am nothing
    I want to die
But really... I am already dead"

    Sonata Arctica - Fullmoon

The animations under the music are from the fameous Japanese Anime Vampire Hunter D. This is a very good animated film about the Good and the Evil, the Love and the Struggle. I suggest to anyone see this Anime.

    Sonata Arctica - Fullmoon

Sitting in a corner all alone,
staring from the bottom of his soul,
watching the night come in from the window, window

    It'll all collapse tonight
    the fullmoon is here again
    In sickness and in health,
    understanding, too demanding
It has no name, there's one for every season
    Makes him insane to know

    Running away from it all
"I'll be safe in the cornfields",
he thinks. Hunted by his own,
    again he feels the moon
    rising on the sky

Find a barn which to sleep in,
    but can he hide anymore
    Someones at the door,
    understanding, too demanding
    Can this be wrong,
it's love that is not ending
    Makes him insane to know

She should not lock the open door
(run away run away, run way)
    Fullmoon is on the sky
and he's not a man anymore
Sees the change in him but can't
(run away run away, run away)
See what became out of this man...
    Fullmoon

    Swimming across the bay,
the night is gray, so calm today
    She doesn't wanna wait.
"We've gotta make the love complete tonight..."

In the mist of the morning
    he cannot fight anymore
    A thousand moons or more,
    he's been howling
    Knock on the door,
and scream that is soon ending
    Makes him insane to know

She should not lock the open door
(run away run away, run way)
    Fullmoon is on the sky
and he's not a man anymore
Sees the change in him but can't
(run away run away, run away)
See what became out of this man...

She should not lock the open door
(run away run away, run way)
    Fullmoon is on the sky
and he's not a man anymore
Sees the change in him but can't
(run away run away, run away)
See what became out of her darling man

She should not lock the open door
(run away run away, run way)
    Fullmoon is on the sky
and he's not a man anymore
    ohhhoooww ohhhow......
see what became out of that man

"Remember that, even when those who move you be kings or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before God, you cannot say, "But I was told by others to do thus,"or that virtue "was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice."

A favorite song from one of my favorite bands, Garbage, featuring one of my all-time favorite people, Shirley Manson. Based on comments Shirley has made in other venues, the song is autobiographical - but she could just as easily have been describing me and, I would guess, many other people as well.

Garbage - Cup of coffee (New York, 2013)

You tell me you don't love me over a cup of coffee
And I just have to look away
    A million miles between us
    Planets crashing to dust
I just let it fade away

I'm walking empty streets hoping we might meet
I see your car parked on the road
The light on at your window
I know for sure that you're home
But I just have to walk on by

So no of course we can't be friends
Not while I'm still this obsessed
I guess I always knew the score
This is how our story ends

I smoke your brand of cigarettes
And pray that you might give me a call
I lie around in bed all day just staring at the walls
Hanging round bars at night wishing I had never been born
And I give myself to anyone who wants to take me home

So no of course we can't be friends
Not while I still feel like this
I guess I always knew the score
This is how our story ends

    You left behind some clothes
My belly somersaults when I pick them off the floor
My friends all say they're worried
    I'm looking far too skinny
I've stopped returning all their calls

And no of course we can't be friends
Not while I'm still so obsessed
I want to ask where I went wrong
But don't say anything at all

It took a cup of coffee
To prove you never loved me

This song is so true - I know it is true from my own experience, that you can reach a point in a bad relationship where you no longer want anything for yourself. That is indeed a "sin".. to love someone so much that your own identity is submerged, buried, lost in the other person.

    Android Lust - Sin

You taught me to lie, I taught you to fake it
You asked me to take it with no explanation
Red red wine makes a stain on your shirt
And I pretend there's no stain at all

You ask me to dance, I turn you down
You tell me rejection is good for one's heart and soul

You taught me to lie, I taught you to fake it
You asked me to take it with no explanation
Red red wine makes a stain on your shirt
And I pretend there's no stain at all

You ask me to dance, I turn you down
You tell me rejection is good for one's heart and soul

You wanted me to go, I got you to come
In time I would have burned you
I wanted to fly, you just wanted to be
Inside - I could have killed you
It's a sign of the times
I just don't need you anymore

You wanted me to go, I got you to come
In time I would have burned you
I wanted to fly, you just wanted to be
Inside - I could have killed you
It's a sign of the times
I just don't need you anymore

Oh.. it's a sin not to want things
It's a sin not to want things
It's a sin not to want things
    It's a sin, it's a sin - a sin just to feel this
It's a sin not to want things
    Oh.. it's a sin..

This has happened to so many men.

Brad Paisley, Alison Krauss - Whiskey Lullaby

She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette
She broke his heart, he spent his whole life tryin' to forget
We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind
    Until the night

He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory
Life is short, but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees
We found him with his face down in the pillow
With a note that said, 'I'll love her till I die.'
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby

The rumors flew but nobody knew how much she blamed herself
For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath
She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind
    Until the night

She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away his memory
Life is short, but this time it was bigger
Than the strength she had to get up off her knees
We found her with her face down in the pillow
Clinging to his picture for dear life
We laid her next to him beneath the willow
While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby
Life is like a fire hydrant- sometimes you help people put out their fires, but most of the time you just get peed on by every dog in the neighborhood.

Sonata Arctica - Letter To Dana

Sonata Arctica - Letter To Dana

Sonata Arctica - Letter To Dana

Dana, my darling, I'm writing to you.
Cause your father passed away, it was a beautiful day
And I don't want to bother You anymore,
I used to hope you'd come back
    But not anymore Dana.

My eyes might have betrayed me, but I have seen
Your picture on the cover of a filthy magazine
And I think my heart just cannot handle that
Dana, my darling, would be so bad.

Dana my darling I'm writing to you
Cause your mother passed away it was a really rainy day
And I didn't mean to bother you anymore
Your mother wished: Come visit your fathers grave, Dana

Your father disowned you because you have sinned
But he did forgive you in condition he was in
And I hope you won't do those things anymore
Dana My darling I'm waiting for

Little Dana O'Hara oh, Dana my dear,
How I wish that my Dana was here
Little Dana O'Hara decided one day
    To travel away, faraway

No, you can't surprise me anymore
No, I've seen it all before
But it seems I cannot let you go
    Dana, Dana, Dana, Dana

And I think that I told you, I'd wait for you forever
Now I know someone else's holding you,
So, for the first time in my life - I must lie
Lie's a sin, mess that I am in,
Love is not the thing I feel know
I promise you: I won't write again 'til the sun sets
    Behind your grave

Dana, oh, Dana I'm writing to you
I heard you passed away, it was a beautiful day
I'm old and I feel time will come for me
My diary's pages are full of thee

Little Dana O'Hara oh, Dana my dear,
How I wish that my Dana was here
Little Dana O'Hara decided one day
    To travel away, faraway

Lady Antebellum - Need You Now

    "Need You Now"

Picture perfect memories scattered all around the floor.
Reaching for the phone 'cause I can't fight it anymore.

And I wonder if I ever cross your mind?
For me it happens all the time.

    [Chorus:]
It's a quarter after one, I'm all alone and I need you now.
Said I wouldn't call but I've lost all control and I need you now.
And I don't know how I can do without.
    I just need you now.

Another shot of whiskey, can't stop looking at the door.
Wishing you'd come sweeping in the way you did before.

And I wonder if I ever cross your mind?
For me it happens all the time.

    [Chorus:]
It's a quarter after one, I'm a little drunk and I need you now.
Said I wouldn't call but I've lost all control and I need you now.
And I don't know how I can do without.
    I just need you now.

    Oh, whoa
Guess I'd rather hurt than feel nothing at all.

    [Chorus:]
It's a quarter after one, I'm all alone and I need you now.
And I said I wouldn't call but I'm a little drunk and I need you now.
And I don't know how I can do without.
    I just need you now
    I just need you now.
Oh, baby, I need you now.

I like to listen to this ballad sometimes... 80's style

    Europe - Carrie

When lights go down, I see no reason
For you to cry. We've been through this before
In every time, in every season,
    God knows I've tried
So please don't ask for more.

Can't you see it in my eyes
This might be our last goodbye

Carrie, Carrie, things they change my friend
Carrie, Carrie, maybe we'll meet again,
    Somewhere again

I read your mind, with no intentions
Of being unkind, I wish I could explain
It all takes time, whole lot of patience
If it's a crime, how come I feel no pain.

Can't you see it in my eyes
This might be our last goodbye

Carrie, Carrie, oh things they change my friend
Carrie, Carrie, maybe we'll meet again

Can't you see it in my eyes
This might be our last goodbye

Carrie, Carrie, oh things they change Carrie Carrie Carrie
Carrie, Carrie, maybe we'll meet again
    Oh somewhere, again

    When lights go down
