'Hangover-free Alcohol' Could Replace All Regular Alcohol by 2050, Says David Nutt

The new drink, known as 'alcosynth', is designed to mimic the positive effects of alcohol but doesn’t cause a dry mouth, nausea and a throbbing head

A new type of synthetic alcohol has been discovered which could allow people to enjoy the sociable effects of a few pints, but skip the hangover that usually follows.

The new drink, known as 'alcosynth', is designed to mimic the positive effects of alcohol but doesn’t cause a dry mouth, nausea and a throbbing head, according to its creator Professor David Nutt.

The Imperial College Professor and former government drugs advisor told The Independent he has patented around 90 different alcosynth compounds.

Two of them are now being rigorously tested for widespread use, he said – and by 2050, he hopes alcosynth could completely replace normal alcohol.

Will it be addictive or make people impulsive and violent? Because sickness is at least a mild deterrent to abuse.

If it is addictive and damaging to the liver it is unlikely that it will be made legal. If alcohol was discovered today it would be categorised class A along with heroin and cocaine. Nutt was Tony Blair's drugs advisor so he's well connected. But he still has a long way to go to get this stuff across pub counters.

most commercial alcohol will give you a hangover. It is because it is mass produced and they do not bother to remove the bad things out of it. Good moonshine made by somebody that knows what they are doing will not give you hangover. don't ask how I know these things

This reminds me of Star Trek... they have Synthehol there

Synthehol (a portmanteau of "synthesized" and "alcohol") is a chemical variant of alcohol. It appears to have the same taste and smell as "real" alcohol to most individuals, but none of the deleterious effects associated with alcohol for most humanoids, such as debilitating intoxication, addiction, and alcohol poisoning.

It sounds like some kind of narcotics, I prefer the naturally occurring real thing, particularly since its effects are known and understood whereas with this other stuff nobody knows what it may or may not be doing to you.

Besides, there is no great secret to avoiding hangovers.

    Don't drink too much.
    Don't mix your drinks.
Stay away from certain brands of wine, liquor and beer which are known to give you hangovers. (This does of course require intensive research and trials.)

As Spearbrave mentioned, some commercial products contain impurities and elements which are quite likely to make you feel ill. Sulphites in certain kinds of wines, spirits containing too high concentrations of poisonous types of alcohol mixed with the non-poisonous alcohol and so on.

When distilling liquor the right way, you don't end up with these poisons mixed into the end product and you are much less likely to awake the next day with a splitting headache.

    Yes, you are very correct.

Again don't ask how I know these things.

When distilling spirits you usually get rid of the first 750ml from the batch these are called fore shots. A batch being 75 Liters. These first things that come out are full of methanol and even acetone. In the large commercial distilleries they have continuous running stills and you cannot remove the fore shots. Next to come out of the condenser is the Heads. The Heads have trace amounts of various congers and oils that have a bad taste plus help give you a hangover. You save the Heads for the next batch to strip the ethanol out of them later. Then comes what is called the hearts or as I like to call it "the good stuff" you keep running the still until the Hearts are about 50% Alcohol By Volume( AVB ). The Hearts is what you want to drink. After the Hearts comes the Tails. The Tails are full of all kinds of flavor, but those flavor oils will give you a hangover. You always save the Tails for the next batch.

    * note the above post is for educational purposes only- Distilling spirits without a federal license for personal use is illegal in the US.

Again don't ask how I know these things, maybe I read a book or some crap like that.

Hangover-free alcohol? Sorry, but this sounds a bit too much like Aldous Huxley's dystopia is becoming all the more real. People indulging in Soma to deal with the world?
-In kalte Schatten versunken...

"Mr Nutt said his new drinks did not contain benzodiazepine, and their formulas would remain a closely guarded, patented secret." This article is evidently bullshit since patents cannot be kept secret!
