I live about 15 minutes from Niagara Falls...

In the middle of Niagara wine country along Lake Ontario, where many of the vineyards were founded by Dutch and German families...

    In a decent flat...

Is that your porch? Very neat and clean, well maintained. Seems to be a very quiet area, which you inhabit. Reminds me of my vineyard village.

I live where there are hills, woods, water, small farms and a few resorts. It is very peaceful, but hard at times.

Life is like a fire hydrant- sometimes you help people put out their fires, but most of the time you just get peed on by every dog in the neighborhood.

    Thumbs Up Appalachia-Like

This one reminds me of my old home in Appalachia (in the Blue Ridge Mountains), although, I didn't have a stream like this bordering my lot...wish I had...would have been super awesome. I have masses of pix. of said old home filed away in my files, maybe I'll post (or repost) some of them some day.

As an addition to the previous photo, I want to add an interesting, but quite rare sight from my home area: The sight of the Alps in the distant!

The Alpes are about 140 - 150kms away from the Bavarian Forest, so they can´t be seen on normal days.

But there are some days per year when we have extraordinary strong Föhnwind (a dry, warm wind comparable to the Chinook in Northern America) blazing from the Alps northwards to us which creates excellent foresight. Then the Alps can be seen in the south, within one´s greap!

The same works the other way around, too:

The hills of the Bavarian Forest in the north seen from the Alps. They look like a big wall. Click to enlarge.

    To everyone!

    Beautiful photos. Thank you.

Nordmann, Thank you. Yes, this is my back porch, I also have a front porch across the front of the house, which is concrete, both porches are roofed over, meaning, one can usually sit out there on one of the many rocking chairs or the swing and enjoy the beauty of nature, whether it is a coming out of the forest and crossing through the yard, a flock of wild turkeys making the yard their home for a little while, rabbits running through the yard or even a fox. Not to forget the black bear which wondered unto my front porch in the middle of the night before and this is not an isolated occurrence, causing quite a disturbance as well. My dog didn't have a chance but was able to escape safely until I turned on all the outside lights which chased the bear away. Two weeks ago as I was looking out the kitchen window, I seen two bobcats in the back field. It looked like they came from the forest/woods which take up a large portion of my property and they quickly disappeared in the cornfields.

The pond belongs to my property as well. Just before the forest starts there are several paths leading to a creek which runs through the land and farm. Although I miss the mountains and the cooler weather especially in Germany, I have made this my home. My husband and his siblings grew up here, this is his grandmother's old homestead which ended up in strangers hands who couldn't care less about the land. We were able to buy it back many years ago and finally in 2007 build a home here. Both my husband and I always had a connection to the land, to preserve untouched nature and use parts very responsible as farmland. It is a lot of work; this week I have to mow and weed the yard, at least a 3 day job. A lot of work, but work I enjoy. It is just me, my dog and an old rescue horse, it is 28 years old near starvation, looking really good now and enjoying living in this vastness of fields with access to a Stall at anytime he (it is a he) wants to go there. I call it his living room and in the winter time he spends quite a bit of time there as it is big enough for him to turn or lay down. The cows are my a farming neighbor's; as needed he keeps up the fences around my fields and in return I let his cows graze on my fields.

As time goes on I will upload more photos. Georgia is a beautiful state, huge as well. Where I live everything is flat with just a few hills here and there. But despite the lack of mountains it is beautiful. Very sparingly populated. It is a 25 minute drive for me to get to the grocery store or a department store or hardware store. I enjoy and need the serenity, calmness and tranquility this homestead offers.

For four years now, I have lived at the southern stretch of the Great Appalachian Valley in a town about fifteen miles (circa 24 km) west of the foothills of the Unicoi Mountains.

So here are some more pictures. Not taken by myself again but also nice.

On of them is showing the inner town and the townhall/ cityhall. If you look closely you see a chain which was used hundreds of years ago to blame criminals or witches or something similar. It's showed on the last left bottom stone "pillar"

The other photo is showing the "Wasserturm" what's translated water tower. It saved water for fires or the people in town for drinking etc. If i remeber correctly it was build in NSDAP-times. Today its a beautiful sight-seeing place. You can climb to the top an watch all over the town.

Then theres the Marienkirche ("marienchurch") in winter. Its always lighted like this. Beautiful.

And the "bronzene Magd" (bronzern maid) is one of the statues/ figures whos placed all over the town. They was placed to let the residents and visitors remember the far away past on important places. This places was used as a cloth-washing-place. And this maid from the front seen shows a basket full of clothes. Pretty nice in my opinion.

I'll try to post some more own pictures when I'm there again in 4 weeks if you are interested. I can also tell some of the history in general or the history behind the places I'll show you. Just let me know if someone is interested.
